2 2008 Major League Tigers Jeff Baker Colorado Rockies Jeff Baker, who shares the Tiger career record for home runs (59), made his Major League debut on 2005 opening day with the Colorado Rockies. Baker finished his career as a Tiger with a.334 batting average along with 226 RBIs and a.626 slugging percentage. His 59 career homers are tied for fourth-most in ACC history, and his RBI total is second-most in Clemson history. Baker had 12 multi-homer games at Clemson, and he is the only Tiger to ever have two 20-homer seasons as well. Baker was the starting shortstop for the Tigers College World Series team in 2000 as a freshman, as he finished with a.313 batting average along with a team-best 11 homers and 64 RBIs. He was a freshman All-American at shortstop according to Collegiate Baseball. Baker was named first-team All-American by Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball in His sophomore year also saw Baker earn First-Team All-ACC honors after leading the conference in home runs (23) and RBIs (75). As a junior on Clemson s 2002 College World Series team, Baker was named a first-team All- American by Baseball America and NCBWA. He hit.325 with 25 home runs and 87 RBIs along with a.668 slugging percentage. His 25 long balls tied for second in the ACC, tied for the fifth-best mark in ACC history, and tied for the second-best mark in Clemson history. Baker was one of five finalists for the Golden Spikes Award (won by Tiger teammate Khalil Greene), and a semifinalist for both the Dick Howser Trophy and Rotary Smith Award. After spending the seasons in the Rockies minor league system, Baker was called up to join Colorado the night before the season-opener. Baker s debut on April 4, 2005 was an impressive one, as he went 2-for-5 with a homer, double, and two RBIs, becoming only the fifth Rocky to homer in his Major League debut. Jeff Baker He played 12 games for Colorado in 2005, including 10 starts at third base, and finished the year with a.211 batting average. He also committed only one error in 24 chances. In 2006, he moved to right field and played 18 games for the Rockies. In just 57 at-bats, he hit.368 with seven doubles, two triples, five home runs, and 21 RBIs. The 2007 season saw Baker play 85 games. In 144 at-bats, he hit.222 with four homers and 12 RBIs for the National League Champions that went on to play the Boston Red Sox in the World Series. Baker also delivered the game-winning, pinch-hit, RBI single to give the Rockies a 2-1 series-clinching victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League Division Series. He continued to progress in 2008 when he hit.268 with 55 runs, 22 doubles, 12 homers, and 48 RBIs in 104 games. In four Major League seasons, Baker has played 219 games, totaling 35 doubles, five triples, 22 home runs, and 85 RBIs along with a.262 batting average. Baker s Career Major League Stats Year AVG G-GS AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI OB% SB Total Khalil Greene San Diego Padres The most celebrated baseball player in Tiger history is San Diego Padres shortstop Khalil Greene. He took the college baseball world by storm in 2002, setting NCAA and ACC records while winning every major award possible. Greene was selected as a unanimous first-team All-American and ACC Playerof-the-Year after he led the country in hits (134), runs scored (93), total bases (250), and doubles (33). His record-breaking performance should not have been a surprise, as Greene had been raising the bar ever since his days at Key West (FL) High School. He graduated as the school s all-time hits and single-season runs scored leader before bursting onto the scene at Clemson in Greene was a freshman All-American by Baseball America in 1999 and Second-Team All-ACC selection after his sophomore campaign in He continued his outstanding play during the 2001 season when he was named First-Team All-ACC, but no one could have imagined the year he would have in He won every major award in 2002, including the Dick Howser Trophy, Golden Spikes Award, and Rotary Smith Award. He batted.470 with 27 homers, 33 doubles, and 91 RBIs in 71 games. After a stellar college career in which he set the NCAA record for career doubles (95) and consecutive starts (269), he was taken with the #13 overall pick in the 2002 draft by the Padres. Greene spent 2002 and 2003 in the Padres farm system, quickly moving up through the ranks from short-season Eugene to Portland (AAA). As Khalil Greene usual, Greene was so impressive that he was selected to play in the 2003 Major League Futures Game. He joined San Diego on September 1, 2003, becoming the first player from the 2002 draft to make it to the Major Leagues. The 2004 season was his first full year in the big leagues, and Greene did not disappoint. He batted.273 with 15 homers (a franchise record for a shortstop), 31 doubles, and 65 RBIs. Greene was a two-time rookie-of-the-month selection before a broken index finger sidelined him for the remainder of the season. He still finished second in the National League in rookie-of-the-year voting, but he was honored as the league s rookie-of-the-year by Baseball America. In 2005, Greene continued to be a fan-favorite when he hit.250 with 15 homers and 70 RBIs in 121 games. The 2006 season saw him hit 15 home runs for the third straight year. Greene also hit.245 with 26 doubles and 55 RBIs in 122 games. He had one of his best fielding years in 2006 as well, as he committed only nine errors in 456 chances, good for a.980 fielding percentage. In 2007, Greene played and started 153 games, missing only nine regular-season contests that season. In 611 at-bats, he scored 89 runs, and he totaled 44 doubles, 27 home runs, and 97 RBIs along with a.254 batting average. He also had an outstanding.984 fielding percentage, committing just 11 errors in 690 chances in the field. Greene was voted the 2007 team s MVP, as selected by the San Diego Chapter of BBWAA, as well. Greene s 2008 season was cut short by injury, as he played 105 games. He hit.213 with 15 doubles, 10 homers, and 35 RBIs. Then in December of 2008, he was traded to the Saint Louis Cardinals. In six Major League seasons, Greene is hitting.248 with 150 doubles, 14 triples, 84 home runs, and 328 RBIs in 659 games.
