4 This & That FEW CHALLENGES OF LATE--Manager Ned Yost did not ask for review in last night s game, and has challenged just 6 calls in Kansas City s last 43 contests...despite missing on a challenge Friday night in Minnesota, Yost has been extremely successful, going in reviews on the year...conversely, Royals opponents have been successful just 43.3 percent of the time (13-for-30). STARTERS DOING THEIR PART--Since July 22, the Royals have posted a big league best 21-5 ledger with the hurlers compiling an overall ERA of 2.89, the fifth best mark in that span in the Majors...in the 21 victories, the staff has compiled a 2.23 ERA while holding opposing hitters to a.212 overall batting average...in those 21 wins, the starters have won 14 and possess a 2.40 ERA and an opponents BA of since getting his legs back under him following an emergency appendectomy in early July, Jason Vargas has allowed only one run in his last 16.0 innings while posting wins in back-to-back starts...meanwhile, tonight s starter James Shields, has made five starts since July 22 and has gone 2-1 with a 1.75 ERA, holding the opposition to two or fewer runs in four of the five starts. GORDO CHASING BOGGS--Alex Gordon may not know it, but he s honing in on a Hall of Famer after clubbing his 115th career home run in yesterday s win...he is now just three homers shy of Wade Boggs, who hit 118 during his Hall of Fame career and currently stands as the all-time home run leader for a Nebraska native. KRATZ JOINS SHORT LIST--Reserve catcher Erik Kratz made his presence felt in a hurry last night, as the veteran receiver was called up on pinch hit in the seventh inning for an ailing Salvador Perez and clobbered the first pitch over the leftfield fence, while breaking his bat in the process...when he batted in the ninth, his bat stayed in tact and he clubbed a ball just out of the reach of centerfielder Danny Salazar for his first career multi-homer game...it was the third 2-homer contest for the Royals this year, matching the efforts of Alex Gordon (May 18 vs. Baltimore) and Mike Moustakas (July 22 at Chicago). THE BACK END OF THE PEN--Kansas City s recent success can be traced to the seventh, eighth and ninth innings of late thanks to the combination of Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis and Greg Holland, respectively...they have combined to allow just 3 earned runs in 47.0 innings in this 21-5 span for a 0.57 ERA while fanning 52 and holding the opponents to a collective.172 average (28-for-163)...Herrera, who worked the ninth inning in Sunday s win, has posted 11.0 shutout innings since this stretch began on July 22, while he enters this tonight with the second-longest active scoreless inning streak at 19.1 frames spanning 19 outings...the only pitcher with a longer streak is Davis, who worked a scoreless eighth last night and is in the midst of a 22-game streak with 20.2-straight shutout innings, which includes 13.2 shutout frames since July 22...Holland is the only one of the three to be scored upon, allowing 3 earned runs in 14.1 innings (1.88 ERA) since July 22, but converting 13 of 14 save chances, including one last night and 12 in a row. WADING THROUGH THE OPPOSITION--Wade Davis extended his scoreless inning streak to 20.2 with a scoreless eighth last night...the last run he allowed was on June 25th and has been the lone run surrendered in his last 43.0 innings for a 0.21 ERA dating back to April 26, easily the top ERA in the Majors since that date among hurlers with at least 30.0 innings of work...since giving up two earned runs on April 5, Wade has allowed only two runs over his last 46 outings (49.0 innings) for a 0.37 ERA, while fanning 79...he nearly made it four full months without allowing an extra-base hit, but Minnesota s Kurt Suzuki spoiled the streak with a double on July 31. HOLLY ADDS TO RESCUE LEAD--Greg Holland upped his league leading save total to 38 last night by recording the final two outs...the last Royals pitcher to lead the A.L. in saves was Jeff Montgomery (45 in 1993)...Holly has made good of 38 of his 40 tries this year, including 31 of the last 32...over a longer haul, Holland has converted 78 of his last 81 attempts (96.3%) since May 30 of last season, the highest percentage among closers with at least 40 opportunities in that span...since that date, Greg has seven more saves than any other pitcher in baseball (Craig Kimbrel - 71) and has allowed just 14 earned runs in innings for a 1.26 ERA...he recorded his 100th career save on August 8 and since posting his first career save on August 3, 2011 vs. Baltimore, Holland has gone 105-for-115 in save situations, the best save pct. at 91.3 among closers with at least 100 save opportunities...since becoming Kansas City s full-time closer on August 1, 2012, the day after Jonathan Broxton was dealt to Cincinnati, Holland has gone 101-for-108 in save situations, the most saves in the majors while his 93.5 save pct. is the best among relievers with at least 80 save chances. ESPN PRESENCE AHEAD--KC s recent run has caught the eye of the decision-makers in Bristol, CT, as the Royals will be on ESPN2 next Monday when they host the Yankees in a make-up game from a June 9 rainout...the Royals have also been tabbed the Sunday Night Game on August 31 vs. Cleveland, necessitating a game time switch from the traditional 1:10 Sunday starts to 7:07 to accommodate the World Wide Leader...ESPN Radio will get an extended look at the Royals as Jon Boog Sciambi and Chris Singleton will be in town for Saturday, August 30 thru Monday, September 1 for a trio of broadcasts. TRIP ENDS IN ARLINGTON--Kansas City will leave here following tomorrow s tilt and head to Texas, where KC will enjoy Thursday off before opening a weekend series against the Rangers in Arlington...it will be the first regular season meeting between the cohabitants of the Surprise Sports Complex in spring training...the Royals were 3-3 vs. the Rangers last year, including a 1-2 stop in Arlington...KC leads the all-time work by a margin...once this trip is completed, the Royals will have just 13 road games remaining while 20 will still be ticketed for Kauffman Stadium. GORDO HEATING UP--Alex Gordon was not able to participate in the 2014 All-Star Game due to injury, but he s found his stroke in the unofficial second half...since the All-Star break, Gordo has hit.343 (37-for-108) with a.405 on-base pct. and.519 slugging percentage (5 doubles, a triple and 4 homers) and 18 runs scored in 30 games...his second-half OPS (on-base plus slugging) of.923 is 151 points higher than his first half number (.772)...on the year, he s third in the American League with a.358 average with runners in scoring position. RUNNIN ROYALS--The Royals did not steal a base last night, but continue to sit atop the American League theft chart with the Royals have four of the top 21 base thieves in the A.L. with Jarrod Dyson fourth with 27, followed closely by Alcides Escobar in fifth (24), while Lorenzo Cain is tied for 11th with 18 and Nori Aoki tied for 19th (15)...KC s no stranger to this ranking after leading the Majors last year with 153. vs. Rockies (2014) vs. Rockies (career) On Road (career) Player AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI Aoki Butler Cain Colon Dyson Escobar Gordon Ibanez Infante Kratz Moustakas Perez Willingham Starting Pitchers Breakdown Total KC Avg.
