All times Eastern SEASON RECORD: BIG EAST RECORD: 8-10 Bulldogs Face Crucial Final Series At DePaul ON DECK: Butler will close out its regular season schedule and try to capture a spot in the upcoming BIG EAST Softball Championship when it visits DePaul for a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday, May 2-3. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, starting at 12 p.m. (CT), and then wrap up the regular season with a single game on Sunday, beginning at noon. DePaul (20-22, 11-3 BIG EAST), currently in second place in the league standings, has already clinched a berth in the BIG EAST Tournament, which will be played May 8-9 in Rosemont, Ill. League-leading St. John s also has secured a tournament bid. Butler (23-25, 8-10 BIG EAST) is one of five teams chasing the remaining two tournament spots. The Bulldogs, who dropped two of three games to Seton Hall last weekend, are currently tied with Villanova for fourth place in the league standings, one-half game behind Seton Hall in third place. Villanova, which holds the tie-breaker over the Bulldogs, closes the season at St. John s, while Seton Hall hosts Georgetown. Creighton will be at Providence in the other BIG EAST series with tournament implications. SLIM MARGIN: Butler and Seton Hall locked up in a series that saw all three games decided by a single run. The Bulldogs took a rain-delayed opener, 4-3, behind the five-hit pitching of junior Kristin Gutierrez. All three Seton Hall runs came on solo home runs, while Butler picked up a three-run, home run from Kristen Boros and a run-scoring double from Brandyce Sallee. The Pirates then came back one day later to hand Butler a pair of one-run setbacks, 5-4 and 6-5. In the first game, the Bulldogs, trailing 5-2, had bases-loaded with no outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but only managed to push two runners across the plate. Butler mounted another final inning rally in the second game, cutting Seton Hall s lead to 6-5 on a threerun, home run by Alyssa Lach with no outs. The Bulldogs had the tying run on second base and the winning run on first when the final out was made.
