1 SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2014 at TORONTO BLUE JAYS RH Jeremy Hellickson (1-3, 3.71) vs. RH R.A. Dickey (12-12, 3.84) First Pitch: 1:07 p.m. Location: Rogers Centre, Toronto, ONT TV: None Radio: WDAE 620 AM, WGES 680 AM (Spanish) Game No: 149 (71-77) Road Game No.: 74 (38-35) All-Time Game No.: 2,739 (1,266-1,472) All-Time Road Game: 1,370 ( ) March: 1-0 April: May: June: July: 17-6 August: September: 5-6 Since the All-Star Break: RAY MATTER The Rays are 2-2 on this 6-game road trip (1-2 at New York and 1-0 here) last night s 1-0 win was the Rays club-record 5th 1-0 win of the year, tied with Texas for most in the AL it was also their club-record 8th 1-0 game (5-3), tops in the AL it was the 7th time the Rays have allowed 2 hits or fewer in a game, most in the majors the Rays won with 2 hits from the offense, the 49th time in club history the Rays have been to 2 hits or less and just the 2nd time they have won the other occasion came 23 days ago when they beat Detroit and David Price on Aug 21 the 4 hits combined by both teams were the fewest ever in a Rays road game the Rays are 4-3 in their last 7 games and in the 3 losses have blown leads of 4-0, 4-0 and 3-0 Rays are 9-12 since starting a stretch of 26 straight games vs. AL East opponents the Rays have lost 16 of 26 games since returning to.500 (61-61) the night of Aug 15: (Opening Day June 10) The Rays owned the majors worst record, 4.0 games worse than any other team offense averaged 3.58 R/G (28th in majors) and hit.242 (23rd) staff had a 4.10 ERA (22nd in majors) the bullpen worked IP, most in majors (June 11 Aug 15) The Rays owned the majors best record and 3rd-best ERA (2.74) the offense ranked among major league leaders with 4.5 R/G (4th),.266 avg. (3rd) and.337 OBP (1st) (Aug 16 current) The Rays offense ranks 27th in the majors with a.222 avg., and 29th in runs per game (3.12) and slugging (.314). SHUTOUTS Rays pitchers tossed their 20th shutout of the season last night, extending their club record and tying St. Louis for the major league lead in the DH era (since 1973), only 2 other AL teams have thrown 20 or more shutouts in a season both came in 1989: California and Oakland. The Rays are only the 11th AL team in the last 50 years to reach 20 shutouts 52 teams have thrown 20-plus shutouts in AL history, but only 5 have finished the season below.500, and only one in the last 100 years: the 1971 Milwaukee Brewers. The Rays have thrown a major-league-high 65 shutouts over the last 4 years and 77 since 2010, most by an AL team over a 5-year span since the when the Orioles led by Jim Palmer (who had 27 CG SHO during that span) had 78. A total of 37 Rays games have ended in shutouts (they ve been shut out an AL-high 17 times), most by an AL club since the 1973 Yankees who were shut out 21 times and threw 16 shutouts. BEST RAYS DEBUT EVER Last night rookie Nathan Karns became the first Rays to pitch 7 or more shutout innings and allow 2 hits or less in his Rays debut and tied Steve Trachsel (April 3, 2000 at MIN) for the longest scoreless outing in a Rays debut Karns is the first to win a 1-0 game in his Rays debut according to the Elias Sports Bureau, he is the third starting pitcher over the last 8 seasons (since 2007) whose first career win was in a 1-0 shutout, joining MIA Alex Sanabia (July 18, 2010 vs. WAS) and KC Bryan Bullington (Aug 15, 2010 vs. NYY) he threw 114 pitches, most ever in a Rays debut and third-highest total in a pitcher s first career win over the last five seasons (since 2010), trailing only OAK Sonny Gray (118 pitches in August 2013) and SF Madison Bumgarner (115 in July 2010). Karns became the 9th different Rays starter to win a shutout this season, most since the 2012 A s (9) it was the ML-high 8th time this season that a Rays starter has gone 7-plus IP and allowed 2 hits or less, most in the majors they ve done it 6 times in their last 22 games. THEY DESERVE BETTER Rays starters own a 3.47 ERA this season 3rd lowest in the AL and 7th lowest in the majors but are only the last AL team to have its starting staff finish the season with a lower ERA and finish the season below.500: the 1983 Texas Rangers in the last 25 years, only 3 AL teams had their starting staffs finish with a lower ERA and not made the postseason: 1989 Angels (3.42) and the 2012 Rays (3.34) in their last 37 games, Rays starters have allowed 2 ER or less 27 times, and have a 2.81 ERA (227-IP, 71-ER) during that span. STREAK IN JEOPARDY The Rays would need to go at least 11-3 to finish with a winning record for a 7th consecutive season entering 2014, the Rays streak of 6 straight winning seasons was tied with the Cardinals for the 2nd longest current streak in the majors behind the Yankees (21) despite the fact that they are the youngest among the nine major professional sports teams in Florida, only 2 of those franchises have had streaks of 6 or more winning seasons the NFL s Miami Dolphins (7 in and 6 in ) and the NBA s Miami Heat ( ) Tampa Bay s Buccaneers and Lightning have never enjoyed more than 4 consecutive winning seasons. THAT S A FIRST Last night Ryan Hanigan became the first Rays catcher to catch a shutout and hit a home run for the game s only run it s the first time he s done it in his career it s happened 3 other times in the majors this season, all in the NL ATL Evan Gattis twice (Aug 31 vs. MIA and April 6 at PHI) and STL Yadier Molina on Opening Day vs. CIN here are some great catchers who didn t catch a shutout and hit a HR in a 1-0 win: in 1,742 games Johnny Bench didn t do it neither did Jorge Posada, Ted Simmons, Thurman Munson, Lance Parrish, Buck Martinez and Gregg Zaun Hanigan became the 8th Ray to decide a 1-0 game with a home run, 2nd this season (James Loney did it on April 12 at CIN).it was also the 21st shutout Hanigan has caught in his last 133 starts (including postseason) the three most recent AL catchers to win a 1-0 game with a HR: Tyler Flowers, CWS, April 1, 2013 vs. KC (off James Shields) Taylor Teagarden, TEX, July 20, 2008 at MIN (off Scott Baker) Brad Ausmus, DET, April 22, 1999 vs. BOS (off Mark Portugal) RUN DIFFERENTIAL The Rays have a +6 run differential, the only sub-.500 team in the majors with a positive number the last team to finish below.500 with a positive run differential was the 2011 Reds (79-83, +15) the last AL team was the 2009 Blue Jays (75-87, +27). THE ROAD IS LONG, BUT GOOD The Rays are (.520) on the road, 8th best in the majors they are the only team in baseball with a winning record on the road and a losing record overall Rays are a majorleague-best (.675) on the road since June 4, but are only during the same span at home. RAYS vs. BLUE JAYS Last night was the 2nd consecutive 1-0 game between these 2 teams Jays won on Sep 4 in 10 innings at Tropicana Field the Rays trail the season series 10-7 and will lose the season series to the Jays for the first time since Joe Maddon s first year as manager of the Rays (2006) the Rays were 9-9 in 2007 and then went between Jays have won 4 of the last 6 games holding the Rays to 13 runs in the 6 games Jays have out-homered the Rays Rays have lost 6 of their last 10 here all-time the Rays are 15 games over.500 ( ) vs. Toronto, their most vs. an opponent. RAYS vs. KNUCKLEBALLERS R.A. Dickey s start will be the 59th time the Rays have faced a knuckleball starter in their history Rays are in those games, but under Joe Maddon (6-5 in Dickey s starts, 9-9 vs. Tim Wakefield) those starts have been made by Dickey (since 2006), Wakefield, Dennis Springer, Steve Sparks and Tom Candiotti) that group all-time is with 10 no-decisons in those 58 starts the Rays are 6-5 in Dickey s 11 starts as a knuckleballer they were in Wakefield s 36 starts and 7-4 in 11 starts made by Springer, Candiotti and Sparks. THE E-WORD Last night s loss eliminated the Rays from the AL East race the Rays tragic number for the AL Wild Card race is 6 since the end of the 2007 season, the Rays have played only 13 games in which they had already been mathematically eliminated from postseason contention they were eliminated with 11 games remaining in 2009 and two in GETTING OFFENSIVE While the Rays rank 18th in the AL in batting (.248), they went over 1,100 mark last night in men left on base, tops in the majors with 569 runs scored and 111 HR this season, the Rays are on pace for the 2nd-lowest totals in club history ahead of only the inaugural 1998 season their.369 SLG is on track to be the worst in club history (.385 in 1998) although the ML average of.388 SLG is at its lowest mark since 1992 (.377). IL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME TONIGHT Durham was one strike away from winning its 2nd consecutive International League crown last night, but wound up losing to Pawtucket 4-2 in 13 innings Rusney Castillo s RBI single in the top of the 9th tied it for the PawSox and Ivan DeJesus 2-run HR in the 13th was the deciding blow DUR Nick Franklin lined out to deep RF with 2 men on in the bottom of the 13th to end the game Game 5 pits RH Merrill Kelly (9-4, 2.76; 1-0, 1.50) against Pawtucket s RH Keith Couch, who will be making just his second career app at the Triple-A level the Bulls seek their 5th IL championship since becoming a Triple-A affiliate of the Rays in Upcoming Games Opp. Time TV Rays Starting Pitcher Opp. Starting Pitcher Sun., Sep 1:07 p.m. Sun Sports RH Chris Archer (9-8, 3.63) LH Mark Buehrle ((12-9, 3.31) Mon., Sep 15 NYY 7:10 p.m. Sun Sports TBA TBA Tue., Sep 16 NYY 7:10 p.m. Sun Sports RH Jake Odorizzi (10-12, 4.08) TBA Wed., Sep 17 NYY 7:10 p.m. Sun Sports RH Alex Cobb (9-7, 2.75) TBA **All games broadcast on WDAE 620 AM.
