The Marlins will send left-hander Brad Hand to the mound, who is 0-7, 7.97 in 11 career appearances (nine starts) against the Nationals. Washington will counter with right-hander Jordan Zimmermann, who is 8-4 with a 3.18 ERA in 21 career starts against the Fish. This is the second leg of a seven-game road trip for Miami; the trek began with a 2-1 series win against the Mets. The Marlins entered this trip following a 6-3 homestand, earning 2-1 series wins over the Mets, Milwaukee, and Washington. Following this series, the Club returns to South Florida for its final homestand of the season, a six-game stretch against Philadelphia (September 22-24) and Atlanta (Sept ). VS. THE NATIONALS The Marlins lead the season series, 9-8, marking their only winning record versus an NL East rival in Miami has gone 6-3 against the Nats at home, and are just 3-5 at Nationals Park. Since 2008, Miami has gone at Nationals Park and own a record overall in DC. The Marlins lead the all-time series, LAST NIGHT Miami put two runs up in the first inning and battled back late in the game, but fell to the Washington Nationals, 5-4, in 10 innings. Dee Gordon led off the game with a singe to right field and was brought home on Christian Yelich s seventh homer of the year. The Nationals cut the lead to one in the second, and tied the game in the sixth. In the eighth, Marcell Ozuna drove in Ichiro to give the Fish a 3-2 lead, but by the end of the frame the score was 4-3 Washington. Not showing any quit, Miguel Rojas led off the ninth with a double and ended up at third on a throwing error. Two batters later, Rojas crossed the plate to tie the game on a sac fly by Gordon. Rojas finished the game 2x3 with two doubles, while Yelich was 2x5 with a home run and two RBI. Jose Fernandez went 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on five hits (one home run) and two walks with eight strikeouts. CAPITALIZING ON THE HILL Miami has gone 7-3 over its last 10 games, with Marlins starters having posted the second-best ERA among Major League staffs at 2.40 ERA (56.1 ip/15 er) since Sept. 8, surrendering two-or-fewer runs eight times. The only games in which starters allowed more than two runs was in consecutive losses on September 13 vs. Washington and Sept. 14 at Mets, when they allowed three in each contest. THE SPARK BEFORE THE FLASH Dee Gordon led off last night s game with a single to right field. It was the 37 th time this season, and second in as many games, he has led off a game with a hit, marking the second-most by any Major League leadoff hitter this season. Colorado s Charlie Blackmon has done so 39 times. The Marlins record for most leadoff hits in a single season is 54, done by Juan Pierre in 2004 (Stats LLC). NECK AND NECK The Marlins have a 9-8 lead in the season series with the Nats, and are looking to earn their first season series win since 2011 (11-7) in this four-game finale. The Clubs have played each other extremely close this year, as both offenses have scored 57 runs. That is tied with the Cubs and Cincinnati for the lowest run differential in a division-rival series this season. Kansas City-White Sox (66-65, respectively) and Philadelphia-Miami (55-54) rank second with one run separating offenses. - Stats LLC FINISHING STRONG The Marlins are off to an 11-5 start in September, their best opening to a month this season. Miami s.291 (156x536) team average this month leads the Majors, percentage points ahead of Boston (.291; 160x550) and Washington (.285; 170x596). The Club s 3.40 team ERA ranks fifth in MLB, behind the Mariners (2.63), Cubs (3.01), Dodgers (3.04), and Giants (3.11). Miami s current ERA would rank as the third-best for September in Club history, behind a 2.86 mark in 1996 and a 3.20 in Miami by far is experiencing the best September turnaround in the Majors from 2014 to The Fish are 11-5 (.688) this month, compared to (.407) last year, an improvement of.281. The next closest team on that list is the Cubs, who were (.480) in 2014 and are 12-5 (.706) in 2015 (+.226). Seattle (+.169:.519/14-13 to.688/11-5), Arizona (+.169:.269/7-19 to.438/7-9) and Boston (+.110;.423/11-15 to.533/8-7) round out the top five. - Stats LLC FINDING A WAY Over Miami s first 36 games with Giancarlo Stanton on the disabled list, the Club went and averaged just 3.3 runs per game, with 19 home runs, 111 RBI, a.243 average, a.299 on-base percentage, and a.350 slugging percentage. Over their last 37 games, however, the Marlins have begun to figure out how to produce runs without their three-time All-Star right fielder. Over that span, the Club has gone 21-16, averaging 4.2 runs per game, with 29 home runs, 151 RBI, a.277 average,.322 OBP, and a.414 slugging percentage. - Stats LLC BEAST OF THE EAST Dee Gordon, who extended his hitting streak against the Mets to 17 games in their season-series finale Wednesday night, and had a Club-record 35 hits against New York this season, is finding divisional play in the NL East very much to his liking in his first year with Miami. Gordon has a.366 (94x257) average against his division this season, which ranks second, trailing Chris Colabello (.388 vs. AL East) in the Majors. Gordon is batting.353 (24x68) vs. Washington this season, with a hit in all eight games he has played at Nationals Park (.343/12x35).
