3 What do you need to play baseball You need players! The A s have many great players. One important player is my friend Kurt Suzuki. He is the catcher. He has a very special job because he is in every play! The catcher catches the ball after the pitcher throws it past the batter. Since the ball goes so fast, Kurt has to wear special equipment. 4 THE BASEBALL We all have seen or even thrown a baseball. Did you ever wonder what is inside? Well, I asked my dad to cut one open so we could find out. 5 One of my best friends on the Oakland A s is Jemile Weeks. He became part of our team last year. Jemile plays second base, and he wears the #19 on his jersey. He is a great hitter and a very fast runner. Last season alone, Jemile had 22 stolen bases! I wish I was that fast! Here are some other fast things. 6 A bat! Some fly around at night and sleep upside down. The A s use a different type of bat. Their bats are very special, and each player has his own one to use. Use the facts to fill in the missing parts of the bat. Handle- the part the player holds Barrel- the widest part of the bat Sweet spot- where you want to hit the ball Knob- the end of the bat I love when the A s get a hit! 7 It s a Hit! The A s have some great hitters. They hit the ball very far! Sometimes it goes to left field and other times it goes to right field. I wonder why? Some hitters bat from the left side of the plate. Brandon Allen and Daric Barton hit from the left side. Others, like Kurt Suzuki hit from the right. A few guys, like Jemile Weeks and Cliff Pennington, can even hit from both sides! right-handed hitters: usually hit the ball to left field left-handed hitters: usually hit the ball to right field Where would you hit the ball? 9 Strike 1... Strike 2... Strike 3... You re OUT! This is what pitchers like Dallas Braden want to hear. His job is to try to strike out the batters on the other team. Dallas is a great pitcher! The batters do not get many hits when he is pitching. He helps us to win many games. There are different kinds of pitches. Here are a few: Curveball Fastball Screwball Draw a line from the clue to the pitch. This is a speedy pitch. Curveball This is a pitch with a twist. This is the bending pitch.
