First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. Friday with television coverage provided on FOX Sports Southwest. All three games of the Baylor series will air on a FOX Sports network this weekend as the two teams will play on FOX Sports Southwest on Friday, FOX College Sports on Saturday and then FOX Sports Southwest-Plus on Sunday. This is the seventh-consecutive season Texas Tech has opened Big 12 play on the road and the fourth time during that span where the Red Raiders have begun its league slate at Baylor. Texas Tech is all-time in Big 12 opening series, including a 3-10 mark in road series. Texas Tech is all-time against Baylor, including a mark in games played in Waco. Texas Tech previously opened Big 12 play at Baylor in 2014 (1-2), 2012 (0-3), 2011 (2-1) as well as 2003 (1-2), going a combined 4-8 in those games. The victory improved the Red Raiders to 3-1 this season in midweek games as well as in contests played at Major League ballparks. Tyler Neslony connected on his third career grand slam and team-leading fourth home run this season in Texas Tech s win Tuesday. The Baylor series concludes a six-game, 11-day road trip for the Red Raiders as Texas Tech began their trip last weekend at No. 9 California. The Red Raiders lost two games at Cal due to inclement weather. Texas Tech currently leads the Big 12 with four victories over ranked opponents. Texas is the only school in the conference to play more than eight games already this year against ranked opponents (12). Texas Tech head coach Tim Tadlock enters this weekend needing three wins to tie Dan Spencer for third all-time in program history. Tadlock, who was hired by his alma mater prior to the 2013 season, has recorded 112 wins in three-plus seasons. Texas Tech is all-time against Baylor, which includes a mark in games played in Waco. Friday s series opener will mark the 160th game all-time between the two schools. It is the second-longest series for Texas Tech against an opponent, trailing only the 160 games the Red Raiders have played historically against TCU. Texas Tech is 10-9 all-time versus Baylor in Big 12 series (since 1997). The Red Raiders are 3-7 in series played in Waco. Texas Tech leads Baylor, 33-29, in Big 12 play which includes a mark in games played in Waco. Baylor later ended Texas Tech s season with a 5-4 victory at the Big 12 Championship held in Tulsa, Okla. The loss snapped Tech s four-game winning streak over the Bears. TEXAS TECH IN BIG 12 SERIES OPENERS Texas Tech enters its 20th season in the Big 12 Conference this Friday when the Red Raiders open a three-game series at Baylor. Tech is all-time in Big 12 opening series, including a 3-10 mark in road series. This will be the seventh-straight season Tech has opened league action on the road and the fourth time in the past six years where Baylor has hosted the Red Raiders on the first weekend of conference play. Tech previously opened Big 12 play at Baylor in 2014 (1-2), 2012 (0-3), 2011 (2-1) as well as 2003 (1-2), going a combined 4-8 in those games. In addition, the Red Raiders are 8-11 all-time in Big 12 openers. Below is Tech s history in Big 12 opening weekend series. The Longhorns broke a 3-3 tie with a run in the ninth to secure a 4-3 victory. Martin will be making his second career start against Baylor. He previously received the opening ball this past Saturday where he earned a no-decision after four complete innings against No. 9 California. TEXAS TECH NOTES Texas Tech wrapped a 10-game stretch last Saturday where the Red Raiders played eight games against nationally-ranked opponents. The Red Raiders finished 4-4 in those games, including a 3-1 mark against top-10 teams. Texas Tech is 6-2 this season against non-ranked opponents as the Red Raiders took three-of-four games from Milwaukee, split a midweek series against New Mexico State and delivered single-game victories over both Sam Houston State and UT Arlington. The Red Raiders are currently 2-1 in true road games this season after defeating Sam Houston State, 11-6, on Feb. 26 in Huntsville and then splitting a two-game series at No. 9 California last weekend. In its three true road games this season, Texas Tech is averaging eight runs per game as the Red Raiders have compiled a.264 batting average to go along with 24 runs scored, five doubles, three home runs, 19 RBI and a.373 on-base percentage. Texas Tech is a combined 7-1 this season when the Red Raiders hit at least one home run. Texas Tech is a combined 9-0 this season when either leading or tied following the seventh inning. The Red Raiders have scored 10 or more runs in five games already this season. It is the first time Texas Tech has plated at least 10 runs in five of the first 16 games of a season since 2007 (six times). Texas Tech has boasted a balanced offense early on this season as five different Red Raiders have posted 10 or more RBI through 16 games. The Red Raiders had not previously had five or more players in double digits for RBI through 16 games since the 2011 season (five that season as well). Texas Tech has connected on 13 home runs already this season, its most through 15 games since crushing 15 in that same span to start the 2010 campaign. Texas Tech currently controls the Big 12 single-game high this season for home runs after hitting five on March 3 against New Mexico State. The Red Raiders currently rank among the top four in the Big 12 for batting average (.280), on-base percentage (.377), slugging percentage (.417), runs scored (110), hits (152), doubles (33), home runs (13), RBI (103) and sacrifice flies (7). Texas Tech has already inserted 34 of 35 players on the 2016 roster through 16 games this season. Through seven games at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park this season, Texas Tech currently ranks among the national leaders in attendance. 3 AROUND THE DIAMOND Tanner Gardner currently leads the Red Raiders with a.449 average, marking the highest average for a Red Raider through 16 games since Cody Fuller compiled a.483 clip in Tanner Gardner currently leads the Big 12 Conference with his.449 batting average and.565 on-base percentage. Michael Davis is the only other Red Raider to rank among the top 10 hitters in the league for average as Davis is currently tied for ninth with a.340 average. Michael Davis leads the Red Raiders with seven doubles this season which currently ranks tied for second in the Big 12. His seven doubles are four more than his total from his 2015 freshman season. Tanner Gardner leads the Red Raiders with a.476 average (10-for-21) in road and neutral site games. He is followed by Michael Davis, who is hitting.440 (11-for-25) away from home this season. Robert Dugger currently ranks third in the Big 12 with a 1.08 ERA as the junior has allowed just two earned runs over 16.2 innings this season. Dugger is also tied for third in the league with two saves. Hayden Howard is currently tied for the Big 12 lead with three wins this season, all of which that have come out of the bullpen. His 1.53 ERA ranks fourth currently in the conference. Howard has tossed 10.0-consecutive scoreless innings heading into this weekend s series against Baylor. It is the longest scoreless inning streak for a Red Raider since Dominic Moreno went 15.2 innings without allowing a run from April 19-May 3 last year. In addition, Howard has also not allowed a walk over his last 12.0 innings, the longest streak for a Red Raider since Jonny Drozd went 15.1-consecutive innings from April 22-May 15, Eric Gutierrez and Tyler Neslony lead the Red Raider offense with 15 RBI, marking the first time a pair of teammates have both recorded at least 15 RBI through 16 games of a season since 2010 when Scott LeJeune and Barrett Barnes totaled 21 and 19 RBI, respectively. Three Red Raiders - Zach Davis, Orlando Garcia and Tyler Neslony - are hitting over.300 in their careers against Baylor. Davis leads the group with a.412 average (7-for-17) while Garcia has totaled a.353 clip (6-for-17) and Neslony is.333 overall (7-for-21). Ryan Long is on pace for his best offensive year of his career. The junior is currently hitting.278 for the season with 14 RBI, which is eight shy of his career high that was set during his 2014 freshman campaign. Cory Raley became the second Red Raider to record a multi-home run game already this season last Saturday as the senior connected on a solo home run and a three-run shot in Texas Tech s 11-8 victory over No. 9 California. He joined Tyler Neslony, who hit a pair of long balls on March 2 against New Mexico State. TEXAS TECH IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS Texas Tech remained in the national rankings this week as the Red Raiders stayed at No. 25 in the Perfect Game top-25 poll. Tech has appeared in the Perfect Game poll in all five weeks of the 2016 season. The Red Raiders began the year ranked 25th by Perfect Game and 39th by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. Tech was also receiving votes in the USA Today Coaches and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association polls. This is the second-straight year where the Red Raiders have started their season ranked in a preseason poll. It is the first time Texas Tech has appeared in the preseason rankings in consecutive seasons since prior to the campaigns. TIM TADLOCK NOTES Texas Tech is under fourth-year head coach Tim Tadlock. Tadlock owns a collegiate career record of during 13 years as head coach (9 at Grayson, 4 at Tech). Texas Tech is in Big 12 Conference play under head coach Tim Tadlock. TEXAS TECH TURNS TO FRESHMEN ON THE MOUND EARLY IN THE SEASON The Texas Tech rotation is projected to feature all freshmen against Baylor for the second-straight weekend. Tech had planned to start four freshmen last weekend in its series at No. 9 California. Texas Tech has started a freshman on the mound in nine of its 16 games this season. Ty Harpenau and Erikson Lanning lead the group with three starts each this season. Four different Red Raider freshmen have started on the mound this season - Steven Gingery, Ty Harpenau, Erikson Lanning and Davis Martin. Martin became the fourth Red Raiders to start last Saturday when he earned the nod against No. 9 California. Texas Tech had not previously started three true freshmen within the first five games of a season dating back to the start of the 2001 campaign. Texas Tech has used six different freshmen pitchers already this season in Lanning, Harpenau, Gingery, Martin, Ryan Shetter and Jonathan Nicholson. Martin has already been called on five times out of the bullpen as he is 1-1 with two saves. He is the first Red Raider dating back to 1998 to record a win and two saves through the first six games of a season. Gingery recorded his most impressive performance so far this season on March 2 as the left-hander struck out 12 hitters in a 14-2 rout of New Mexico State. His 12 strikeouts marked the most by a Tech freshman pitcher since Miles Morgan fanned 15 on March 18, 2006, against Texas. The performance earned Gingery his first career win. Harpenau is still looking for his first career win as he has earned three no-decisions despite several quality starts. Harpenau went five complete innings against both Milwaukee and No. 6 Louisiana and left the game with the Red Raiders tied in both outings. Lanning began his Red Raider career by tossing six shutout innings against Milwaukee where he allowed just one hit while striking out four in a 12-0 rout. The performance marked the first time a Red Raider freshman had earned the win and combined on a shutout in his career debut since Matt Withrow helped Texas Tech trounce Northern Illinois, 13-0, on Feb. 17, Shetter picked up his first career win on Feb. 27 with two shutout innings of relief in Texas Tech s 5-3 victory over No. 6 Louisiana. 5 TADLOCK JUST FOUR WINS SHY OF PLACING THIRD ALL-TIME IN TEXAS TECH HISTORY Texas Tech head coach Tim Tadlock could potentially take over third place on the school s career wins chart early in the 2016 season as the fourth-year skipper trails Dan Spencer ( ) by three wins heading into this weekend s series at Baylor. Tadlock, who has won 112 games over the past three-plus seasons, led the Red Raiders to 26 victories his first season in 2013 (second-most by a Tech head coach in debut season). He followed with 45 wins - the fourth-most in school history - and Tech s first ever trip to the College World Series in 2014 before finishing with 31 victories a year ago. It marks the second time in the past three seasons Tech has returned at least seven position starters as the Red Raiders previously brought back eight starters prior to the 2014 campaign. In Texas Tech s group of seven returning position starters, five are seniors with a combined 539 games played over their career. Eric Gutierrez, Tyler Neslony and Zach Davis all feature three years of experience in a Red Raider uniform while Tyler Floyd and Cory Raley both transfered to Tech following successful junior-college careers. Texas Tech is tied with Oklahoma State and Baylor for the most position starters returning heading into this season. Texas Tech s group of returners accounted for 219 of the 269 RBI in 2015 (81 percent) as well as 33 of 41 home runs on the year (80 percent). The Red Raiders return their top four hitters (minimum of 50 at-bats) by average from the 2015 season in Cory Raley (.350), Eric Gutierrez (.315), Stephen Smith (.291) and Tyler Neslony (.286). The Red Raiders will face No. 6 Louisiana-Lafayette, No. 8 Arkansas and No. 12 Houston next weekend during the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic hosted by the Houston Astros. Tech will later face No. 7 Cal State Fullerton in a three-game series at home and then No. 8 California in a four-game set in Berkeley. Dating back to the 1995 season, Tech has never played 10 of its first 17 games in a season against top-25 foes. The previous high was nine games against ranked opponents to start the 2012 season. The nearly $1 million project will provide Tech with one of the largest video boards in college baseball as well as a state-of-the-art playing surface. The screen size on the video board will more than double from 15-by-20 feet on the previous model to 48-by-22 feet. Both projects were funded privately through philanthropic contributions and gifts to The Campaign for Fearless Champions. AGAIN After selling out season tickets for the first time in program history prior to 2015 season, Texas Tech fans once again scooped up season tickets in record numbers as Tech sold more than 2,400 season tickets prior to Opening Day. Tech sold out of season tickets just a few weeks later, marking the second-straight year where Red Raider fans have purchased over 2,500 season tickets. Tech has ranked among the top 31 schools in the nation over the past 18 years in average attendance per game. Tech closed the 2015 season averaging 3,665 fans per game, a figure that ranked 13th nationally and the third highest in program history. FLOYD EARNS HIS TEXAS TECH DEGREE PRIOR TO SENIOR SEASON Tyler Floyd will enter his senior season with already a degree in hand as the senior graduated this December with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average in the Texas Tech exercise sports science program. Floyd, who started in 46 games at catcher in 2015, was recognized as the highest-ranking graduate in the ESS program as part of the commencement ceremonies. Floyd was honored late in the 2015 season on the Academic All-Big 12 first team where he was the only conference student-athlete nominated with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Tadlock was named head coach of his alma mater on June 8, 2012, becoming the ninth head coach in program history. Tadlock will enter his 24th year in collegiate baseball in He owns a collegiate career record of in 12 years as a head coach with nine seasons at Grayson County College ( ) and three at Texas Tech (112-81). Tadlock and the Red Raiders completed the biggest turnaround in school history and the second biggest turnaround in Big 12 history, going from 26 wins in 2013 to 45 wins in The season culminated with Texas Tech s first trip to the College World Series in Omaha. Tadlock was named the ABCA Midwest Region Coach of the Year as well as the Skip Bertman National Coach of the Year while guiding the Red Raiders to their best season in school history with a overall mark and Big 12 record. Tech finished overall in Tadlock s third season in 2015, marking the first time since where the Red Raiders have posted consecutive 30-win seasons. The Red Raiders completed Big 12 play at overall, securing a tie for third place in the conference standings, Tech s highest finish since the 2004 season. It was also the second-straight season where Tech has finished among the top four in the Big 12 standings, a first for the Red Raiders since the 2001 and 2002 seasons. Tadlock returned to his alma mater for the 2012 season as the program s associate head coach and recruiting coordinator following six successful seasons as an assistant coach/recruiting coordinator at Oklahoma. Tadlock produced several of the nation s top recruiting classes while at Oklahoma, helping lead the Sooners back to the College World Series in 2010, the Sooners first trip to Omaha since After beginning his college coaching career as an assistant at Hill College ( ) for four seasons, Tadlock became the head coach at Grayson County Junior College, where he led the Vikings to back-to-back National Junior College Athletic Association World Series titles in 1999 and During his nine seasons at Grayson, Tadlock posted a (.774) overall record while being named National Coach of the Year following both title runs ( ). After a prep career at Denton High School and two years at Hill College, Tadlock was a two-year starting shortstop for the Red Raiders where he helped lead Texas Tech to its first-ever 40-win season as a senior in 1991 (42-18). Martin previously made his first career start last Saturday in a no-decision at No. 9 California. The freshman tossed four complete innings against the Golden Bears, surrendering just a run off three hits and a strikeout. Martin is 1-1 overall this season with a 3.07 ERA as he previously made five appearances out of the bullpen. Martin earned the save in his first career appearance on Feb. 20 after tossing four shutout innings out of the bullpen in Texas Tech s 9-1 victory over Milwaukee. He followed up picking up the win just four days later against Sam Houston State following 1.2 shutout innings of relief. He earned his second save of the season on Feb. 26 against then-no. 9 Houston as he tossed a scoreless ninth inning in Tech s 3-2 victory at the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic in Houston. Martin is the first Red Raider freshman dating back to 2001 to earn his first career win while picking up at least two saves over the first six games of a season. LAST TIME OUT Martin made the first start of his career last Saturday, earning a no-decision after four complete innings against No. 9 California. Martin handed off a 5-1 lead in the fifth after allowing a run off off three hits and three walks. It marked the fifth time in his six appearances this season where Martin has allowed one run or less. MARTIN BECOMES FIRST TECH FRESHMAN TO START A BIG 12 OPENER SINCE RAMOS Davis Martin will become the first Red Raider freshman to start a Big 12 opener Friday afternoon since current Miami Marlins closer AJ Ramos earned the nod against Texas in Ramos tossed five strong innings against Texas, allowing three runs off five hits and three strikeouts in a no-decision. The Longhorns broke a 3-3 tie with a run in the ninth to secure a 4-3 victory. MARTIN BECOMES FOURTH FRESHMAN TO START THIS SEASON Martin became the fourth Red Raider freshman to start on the mound this season when he got the nod last Saturday at No. 9 California.
