Iowa Newspaper Association All-State Baseball Teams chosen DES MOINES - The Iowa Newspaper Association announced its 2016 All-State Baseball selections Tuesday, selecting first, second, third teams and team captains for classes 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A. The four seniors selected as team captains are 4A Spencer Van Scoyoc, Cedar Rapids, Jefferson; 3A Grant Judkins, Pella; 2A Javin Drake, Wilton and 1A Brady Harpenau, St. Mary s, Remsen. Cedar Rapids, Jefferson s Spencer Van Scoyoc was named Class 4A captain. Van Scoyoc, a three-time all-state selection as an outfielder and pitcher, helped the J-Hawks to their first state tournament appearance since The 19 th - round draft pick of the Toronto Blue Jays and Arizona State University signee batted.390 with a 4A-best 16 home runs and a.894 slugging percentage. Van Scoyoc had 48 hits, including 14 doubles,.486 on-base percentage and 32 runs. The Mississippi Valley Conference Valley Division Player of the Year posted a 4-2 record on the mound with a 1.45 earned-run average and 65 strikeouts in 43 1/3 innings pitched, limiting opponents to a.126 batting average. Pella senior Grant Judkins was voted first team captain for Class 3A. Judkins led the Pella Dutch to a second straight top four finish at state. The University of Iowa signee was 10-1 on the mound with a 0.65 ERA. Offensively he hit.436 and drove in a team high 39 runs. Judkins was also named the Iowa Gatorade Player of the Year. Senior and Class 2A captain Javin Drake left an indelible mark on the mound and at the plate for Wilton s baseball program. The Western Illinois University signee finished the season with a 10-1 record and 2A-best 0.29 ERA. For the season, Drake struck out a 122 batters and walked only 12 in leading the Beavers to a 29-4 record and a No. 1 state ranking by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association. Offensively, he anchored Wilton with a team-high.491 average, 13 doubles, six triples, two home runs and 40 RBI. The four-year varsity player was 35-6 on the mound and struck out more than 360 hitters. Brady Harpenau of St. Mary s, Remsen was chosen as the captain of the class 1A all-state team. Harpenau, a career.400 hitter, will attend Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, where he will be a member of the Chargers baseball team. He is a four-time All-War Eagle Conference honoree, earned All-District honors his sophomore through senior seasons, was named to the INA s second team in 2015 and was a first team all-state pick by the Coaches Association.
