The Keydets had lost four lid-lifters in a row prior to that game. LEFT-HANDER RARITY - Lefty Brandon Barbery will start Friday's season opener against UMBC. Barbery is the first lefty to start a season opener for the Keydets since Feb. 20, 2009, when Travis Smink got the call against #1 North Carolina. EDENS PRESEASON ALL-CON- FERENCE, WATCH LISTED - Senior Taylor Edens, who is just two saves shy of setting a new school record for career saves, earned a pair of preseason honors this year. CONFERENCE PERFORMERS - Although the Keydets will field a young squad this year, two of their sophomores were among their top performers later in the 2015 season. Jacob Jaye, VMI's projected starter at shortstop, hit.293 in 12 games, but it was Collin Fleischer who tore the cover off the ball. Fleischer hit.355 in SoCon play last season to earn All- Freshman honors.
