2 U.S. Cellular Community Park 2016 Highlights USCCP This Year: Generated an all-time record of $11.8 million in estimated economic impact. Set records for tournament teams (1,837), visiting teams (890) and total games played (5,200). Attracted over 165,000 participants and spectators for league and tournament games. The 890 visiting teams produced over $5 million in local spending. Experienced a 33 percent rise in youth baseball tournament team counts. Won a ASA/USA Softball national tournament hosting excellence award for the ninth time since USCCP Shatters Economic Impact Record Youth Tournaments Highlight Record-Setting Year Sharp increases in youth tournament participation stimulated another record-setting year for economic impact generated by U.S. Cellular Community Park. The 15-field sports park generated over $11.8 million in estimated economic impact from 2016 tournaments and special events, eclipsing last year s high-water mark by almost $800,000 - a seven percent increase. Ten of the 13 City of Medford-coordinated youth baseball and softball tournaments were sold out, resulting in a 19 percent surge in team participation. The first full year since completion of three additional ballfields resulted in a 17 percent increase in local team counts, and a 15 percent rise in teams visiting from outside the Rogue Valley. More games were played at USCCP in 2016 than ever before (5,200), including 1,837 tournament contests -- over 250 more than last year s recordsetting count. Since opening in May 2008, USCCP has produced over $79.5 million in economic impact, factoring in a ripple effect. The estimated amount of visitor spending since 2008 ($34.6 million) has surpassed the park s construction costs ($32.5 million). Youth Baseball Tournaments The popularity of the City s youth baseball and fastpitch tournaments reached an all-time high in All nine city-run baseball tournaments sold out in the U10 through U13 age groups, with teams traveling as far as Lodi, Calif. and Tacoma, Wash. to participate. A grand total of 309 youth baseball teams competed in the nine events, a 13.6 percent increase over Youth Fastpitch Tournaments Ninety-nine teams played in four city-run recreational fastpitch tournaments, a 39 percent increase in team count due in large part to the launching of a new event, Halloween in May. An additional 30 teams from all over the West Coast competed in the ASA U10B Western National Tournament the first week of August, which generated $691,000 in economic impact. The City of Medford earned its ninth ASA award for tournament hosting excellence since 2010 with a best-ever 99 score on a 100-point scale. The first full year of operations with nine synthetic-turf hardball fields allowed Medford to run larger tournaments and increase economic benefit. Creating Healthy Lives, Happy People and a Strong Community
3 Memorial Day Weekend As has become commonplace, Medford s 2,600 hotel rooms were jam-packed Memorial Day weekend as a result of the annual Rogue Valley Timbers Memorial Challenge, which attracted over 165 teams, and the City s 50-team youth baseball tournament. The two events combined to generate over $2.178 million in estimated economic impact based on the teams that competed at USCCP. Adult Sports Leagues Medford Parks and Recreation coordinated over 2,500 adult sports league games at USCCP in For the second straight year, over 400 teams registered for at least one of four seasons of softball league play, continuing to make Medford the state s largest city softball league. USCCP Tournament Historical Team Counts 2016 USCCP Highlights A grand total of 524 teams registered for 16 youth baseball and youth fastpitch tournaments at USCCP, a 16 percent increase (74 teams) compared to All four seasons of adult outdoor soccer leagues were sold out in co-ed and women s divisions, a grand total of 75 teams. 6 About U.S. Cellular Community Park U.S. Cellular Community Park (USCCP) is owned and operated by the City of Medford. USCCP is the largest municipal installation of FieldTurf in the United States with nearly 1.5 million squarefeet of synthetic grass. Park Size: 132 acres Address: 300 Lowry Lane, Medford OR Construction Cost: $32.5 million Sports Fields: 15 Diamond Sports Complex: 8 fields Multi-Sport Complex: 6 fields Harry & David Field (baseball) Fields By Type: Full-Size Baseball: 3 Softball/Baseball: 7 Soccer/Football: 5 All fields feature: FieldTurf synthetic grass Musco lighting systems Daktronics scoreboards U.S. Cellular paid $650,000 for park naming-rights in At the time it was the largest naming-rights agreement for a municipal recreational facility in Oregon history. The 5-field softball/baseball complex opened on May 9, 2008 and has already hosted 36,700 youth and adult games. Significance of the Economic Impact Report In most communities, parks and recreation agencies are the engines of tourism and economic development. Recreational facilities like USCCP attract tourists, businesses and retirees, and enhance real estate values. A common mistake is to merely provide decision-makers with financial reports on the revenue and expenses of these facilities instead of illustrating economic impact and the broader value of the community s investment. Economic impact reports are estimates and are easily inflated. Methodology and Data Collection This study closely follows the economic impact data-collection and calculation methods set forth by Texas A&M researcher Dr. John L. Crompton in his landmark 1999 book, Measuring the Economic Impact. Crompton contends only spending by visitors to Medford is meaningful in economic impact reports. Expenditures by tournament participants who reside in or near Medford are not included in Personal Income and Jobs calculations because of the likelihood their money would have been spent in the community on other forms of entertainment. The economic impact report also does not calculate the impact of participants in City-sponsored sports leagues that utilize USCCP. The questionnaire used for this study generated spending data from tournament directors regarding approximate amounts each team spent on entry fees, food and beverages, entertainment, retail shopping, transportation expenses and lodging. Conclusions Total Spending: USCCP hosted 41 tournaments or events that attracted 1,837 teams that spent an estimated $6,405,228 in hard dollars. Visitor Spending: The 890 visiting teams spent over $5 million. Softball team size is estimated at 14; baseball, fastpitch teams and soccer is estimated at 18. Sales: Total Spending by all USCCP tournament participants (local and visiting teams) multiplied by a ripple effect of 85 cents for every dollar spent, for a grand total of $11,849,671. The 1.85 multiplier is based on Crompton studies of tournaments in a city of similar size. Personal Income: This measure reports the direct, indirect and induced spending of visiting teams only. For every dollar spent by tournament visitors, 65 cents of personal income accrued within the community in the form of employee wages, salaries and proprietary income. Simply stated, USCCP theoretically generated $42 for each Medford resident. Jobs: If one job is created for every $42,366 Medford s median income USCCP tournaments helped sustain nearly 119 jobs in the community based on the direct spending of visiting teams. The figure refers to both full- and part-time jobs, and it assumes the local economy is operating at full capacity and that there is no slack to absorb demand created by USCCP events.
