PLENTY WITH TWENTY: Seven O s hitters had 20-or-more home runs in Welington Castillo, Mark Trumbo, Manny Machado, Jonathan Schoop, Adam Jones, Trey Mancini, and Chris Davis all had at least 20 home runs with the Orioles...The 2017 season marked the second time in Orioles history (since 1954) that the team has had seven players with 20-or-more homers in a season (also 1996)...According to STATS, LLC., the 2017 Orioles are the sixth Major League team with at least seven players with 20-or-more home runs in a season, and first since the 2010 Toronto Blue Jays Tim Beckham also finished the season with 22 total home runs, having hit 12 while with Tampa Bay and 10 while with the Orioles. MOST VALUABLE ORIOLE: Jonathan Schoop was voted the winner of the 2017 Louis M. Hatter Most Valuable Oriole Award by members of the local media...schoop finished the season batting.293/.338/.503 (182- for-622) with 35 doubles, 32 home runs, 105 RBI, and 92 runs scored, having set career-highs in hits, home runs, runs, and RBI...Schoop was named AL Player of the Week for the week of July 17-23, hitting.433/.438/.800 (13- for-30) with two doubles, three home runs, eight runs, and 16 RBI over seven games; his 16 RBI led the majors and his three home runs were tied for the most in the AL during the week He posted a career-high 26-game onbase streak from April 12-May 12 when he hit.344/.385/.613 (32-for-93) with 10 doubles, five home runs, 14 runs, 17 RBI, four walks, and four hit by pitches Schoop was selected to the 2017 All-Star Game, his first career All-Star selection, going 1-for-1 with a double and run scored He established an O s record for RBI by a second baseman and his 32 homers were also a team record for a second baseman, breaking his own record of 25 in MAKING HIS CASE: Jonathan Schoop ranked among AL leaders in several categories He ranked 15 th in the AL in batting average (.293) and ranked sixth with 105 RBI His 32 home runs ranked 18 th and his 67 extra-base hits tied for 12 th Schoop s 182 hits ranked sixth in the AL Schoop was named to his first All-Star team this season and was named AL Player of the Week for July Orioles have been named AL MVP five times: Brooks Robinson (1964), Frank Robinson (1966), Boog Powell (1970), and Cal Ripken, Jr. (1983, 1991). DRIVE EM IN: Jonathan Schoop recorded his first career 100 RBI season and became the fastest Oriole to reach 100 RBI (August 31) since Chris Davis in 2013 (August 1) Schoop established an Orioles record for RBI by a second baseman (primary position), passing Roberto Alomar, who had 94 RBI in 1996 Schoop ranked sixth in the AL and tied for 12 th in the majors with 105 RBI during RATED ROOKIE: Among qualifying American League rookies, Trey Mancini ranked second in batting average (.293) and slugging percentage (.488), ranked third in on-base percentage (.338) and RBI (78), and tied for third in home runs (24) Among qualifying Major League rookies, Mancini s 159 hits ranked first His 159 hits also ranked second-most in Orioles history for a rookie season, behind Eddie Murray s 173 hits in 1977 His 24 home runs ranked third-most in Orioles history for a player during his rookie season, trailing only Eddie Murray s 27 in 1977 and Cal Ripken, Jr. s 28 in SEVENTEEN IN 17: Trey Mancini had a season-long hitting streak of 17 games from September According to STATS, LLC., Mancini owned the longest hitting streak for an Orioles rookie in club history and the longest for a rookie in the majors in 2017 His streak was also tied for fifth-longest this season for all Major League hitters, regardless of rookie status. TREY S COMPANY: Rookie Trey Mancini hit eight home runs through his first 17 career games According to STATS, LLC., the eight homers tied the Major League record (at the time) for most through 17 career games He joined Carlos Delgado (TOR, ) and Trevor Story (COL, 2016) According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Mancini was the first player with eight home runs within his first 15 career hits since Carlos Delgado did so for the Blue Jays in Delgado s eighth career home run came on his 13 th hit. CATCH THIS: O s catchers ranked second in the AL and ranked fifth in the majors with a.275 (162-for-590) average...when catching, Welington Castillo, Caleb Joseph, Francisco Peña, and Chance Sisco combined to notch 25 doubles, one triple, 31 home runs, and 82 RBI O s catchers ranked second in the majors with 31 homers Castillo led AL catchers and ranked second in the majors with a.282 batting average and his 20 home runs ranked fourth in the AL and ranked sixth in the majors among catchers (primary position, min. 330 AB). AN AWESOME AUGUST: In 29 games in August, the Orioles led the majors with a.306 average, a.534 slugging percentage, and 57 home runs...their 57 home runs set a new Major League record for the month of August, breaking their own record of 55, set last season The 57 home runs were the third most hit by a team in any calendar month in Major League history, trailing only the 58 hit by the Orioles in May of 1987 and 58 by the Seattle Mariners in May of 1999 The Orioles ranked second in the AL with 169 RBI and 175 runs during the month Orioles relievers ranked fourth in the AL and fifth in the majors with a 2.80 ERA during the month. PLAYER OF THE MONTH: Manny Machado was named the AL Player of the Month for August...Machado batted.341 (43-for-126) with 23 runs, six doubles, a triple, 12 home runs, 35 RBI, and three stolen bases over 29 games to earn his second career Player of the Month award (also April 2016)...Among AL hitters, Machado finished first in RBI, tied for first in home runs, fourth in slugging percentage, and fifth in batting average...machado became the 10 th player in Major League history, and the first in O s history, to record three grand slams in a calendar month.
