The Aztecs (9-8) will meet Brigham Young at 7 p.m. Thursday at SDSU Softball Stadium, before the rest of the tournament heads to the three-field Sportsplex USA in nearby Santee, Calif. In Santee, SDSU will meet Fresno State (4:30 p.m. PT) and Charlotte (7 p.m. PT) on Friday, Saint Joseph s (1:45 p.m. PT) and Nevada (4:15 p.m. PT) on Saturday and Long Beach State (11:30 a.m. PT) on Sunday. The other four teams in the tourney are Cal Poly, Cal State Northridge, San Diego and Utah State. To follow the tournament, including stats and more, paste the following link into your web browser: San Diego State is coming off a 2-4 weekend at the Cathedral City Classic, where three of its losses came to top-15 teams, including No. 6/6 Oklahoma, No. 8/8 Texas and No. 14/15 Stanford. The Aztec offense has homered 21 times in 17 games this season, which is already tied for the fourth most in a season in program history and more than four of the program s seven NCAA tournament teams ( , , , ). Sophomore Hayley Miles leads SDSU in numerous categories, including batting average (.375), at-bats (56), runs (18), hits (21), doubles (7), total bases (43), walks (7) and on-base percentage (.438). Classmate Lorena Klopp, meanwhile, has team highs of six home runs and 16 RBIs. Redshirt junior Rebecca Arbino (2-3, 1.39 ERA, 40.1 IP) and senior Bailey Micetich (5-2, 2.10 ERA, 53.1 IP) lead a pitching staff that has combined for two shutouts and 104 strikeouts in 117 1/3 innings. 2 l l l l l l l KATHY VAN WYK HEAD COACH 16TH SEASON CS FULLERTON, 1983 As a player, Van Wyk earned All-America honors and won the Broderick Award, given to the best player in the nation, in 1981 after going 35-1 with a 0.18 ERA. The victories remain a school single-season record and.972 winning percentage was an NCAA Division I record until Her phenomenal season included four no-hitters, six one-hitters, back-to-back perfect games, 26 shutouts and 270 strikeouts. Is the school s all-time winningest coach with 518 career victories, including a program-best 44 wins in 2008 Earned her third Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year award in 2008 after leading the Aztecs to a 15-5 mark in league play. She also won the award in 2002 and Has led SDSU to seven NCAA tournament appearances (2001, 2003, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011) Guided San Diego State to its fourth MWC regular season title in 2008 with a 15-5 record. The team s other championships came in 2002, 2003 and Coached her fourth All-American in 2011 in Bailey Micetich. Micetich was an Easton Third-Team All- American. KCR College Radio is a volunteer-run student radio station located on the San Diego State University grounds. Last Weekend With the Aztecs SDSU is coming off a 2-4 weekend at the Cathedral City Classic, where three of its losses came to top-15 teams, including No. 6/6 Oklahoma, No. 8/8 Texas and No. 14/15 Stanford. The other loss, the Aztecs first loss against a team that wasn t nationally ranked or receiving votes, came to Iowa State. San Diego State picked up its two wins over New Mexico State and Cal State Northridge. SDSU struggled at the plate, thanks in large part to three of its games coming against top-15 teams, and hit.215 with 21 runs (3.50 runs per game). Senior Felicia Reifschneider (San Diego/Morse HS) was 5-for-16 (.313) with two runs to pace the offense, while sophomore Hayley Miles (Antelope, Calif.) (.273, HR, 3 RBI, 7 R), senior Justeen Maeva (San Diego/Mira Mesa HS) (.267, 4 RBI) and redshirt sophomore Patrice Jackson (Kansas City, Mo.) (.250, HR, 4 RBI also contributed. Sophomore Lorena Klopp (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) was 4-for-8 (.500) with a homer and five RBIs, while battling an illness. The pitching staff was once again led by redshirt junior Rebecca Arbino (Clovis, Calif./Texas A&M) (1-2, 1.03 ERA, 20.1 IP) and senior Bailey Micetich (Woodland, Calif.) (1-1, 1.26 ERA, 16.2 IP). u NO. 6/6 OKLAHOMA 5, (RV/RV) SAN DIEGO STATE 0 Feb. 23, 2012 l Big League Dreams SP l Cathedral City, Calif. In the opener, the Sooners took advantage of a San Diego State error to score three runs in the bottom of the second inning with two outs en route to the 5-0 win... RBI singles by Lauren Chamberlain in the fourth and Reeves in the sixth gave OU the 5-0 win... CF Felicia Reifschneider had three of the Aztecs five hits, while RF Patrice Jackson and SS Hayley Miles also had a single... RHP Bailey Micetich took the loss after allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk over four innings of work. She struck out three... RHP Kamerin May pitched the other two innings and yielded a run on two hits, while striking out one. u NO. 8/8 TEXAS 2, (RV/RV) SAN DIEGO STATE 1 Feb. 23, 2012 l Big League Dreams SP l Cathedral City, Calif. In the nightcap, Karina Scott doubled to right-center field in the bottom of the seventh to score Taylor Thom and Mandy Ogle to give the Longhorns the walkoff 2-1 victory... San Diego State had taken the lead in the sixth when 1B Justeen Maeva singled home SS Hayley Miles with two outs... RHP Rebecca Arbino then got out of a jam in the bottom of the sixth when Texas Brejae Washington led off with a single, stole second and got to third on an Aztec throwing error. But Arbino struck out Lexy Bennett (swinging) and Courtney Craig (looking), and got Nadia Taylor to pop up to Miles at shortstop to end the threat... After a top of the seventh by SDSU, Scott ended the game with a one-out double... It was the second walkoff loss by San Diego State this year... CF Felicia Reifschneider finished her 4-for-5 night with a single against Texas... Arbino took the loss after giving up two runs over 6 1/3 innings. She struck out a season-high seven batters, and allowed six hits and two walks. u (RV/RV) SAN DIEGO STATE 6, NEW MEXICO STATE 0 Feb. 24, 2012 l Big League Dreams SP l Cathedral City, Calif. RHP Rebecca Arbino tossed a complete game shutout to lead San Diego State to a 6-0 win over New Mexico State on Friday... Arbino gave up just five hits, all singles, and a three walks over seven innings. She struck out six against a team that came into the weekend with a.372 average and 17 home runs in 11 games... The Aztecs scored two runs each in the bottom of the third, fifth and sixth inning... 1B Justeen Maeva drove in both runs in the third on a single down the right field line... In the fifth, RF Patrice Jackson laced a single down the left field line that scored another two runs... 3B Ashley Rose added to the San Diego State lead in the sixth when her double scored the final two runs of the game... Seven different Aztecs had one hit apiece, while LF Lorena Klopp drew a pinch-hit walk. u IOWA STATE 6, (RV/RV) SAN DIEGO STATE 4 Feb. 25, 2012 l Big League Dreams SP l Cathedral City, Calif. San Diego State softball team scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning but it was too little, too late in a 6-4 loss to Iowa State Saturday at the Cathedral City Classic... The Aztecs lost their first against a team this season that wasn't nationally ranked or receiving votes... Trailing, 6-1, after six innings, SDSU put up three runs to close the gap. With the bases loaded and one out, SS Hayley Miles doubled to right field to score PR Wendy Tamayo and LF Kayla Jordan... C Kristin May followed with a sacrifice fly to left field that scored 2B Katie Mathis, but ISU pitcher Tori Torrescano got DP Kamerin May to ground out, ending the game in favor of Iowa State... San Diego State got its first run in the fourth when redshirt PR Roshana Lavery scored from second base on a Cyclone error that allowed 3B Fiana Finau to reach first base... The Aztecs managed only three hits off Torrescano... Miles and Kamerin May had doubles, while 3B Ashley Rose singled... Torrescano homered twice and drove in four runs to lead ISU... RHP Kamerin May took the loss for SDSU after allowing three runs on three hits and a walk in 1/3 of an inning...
