Central than when this stretch began does that sound like too much of a stretch? The Cubs own the best record in the N.L. at and have reached 27 games above.500, their high water mark, for the first time this season the Cubs are guaranteed a winning record for a fourth season in a row for the first time since a six-year run from WHAT S NEXT?: The Cubs tonight play their series finale against the Arizona Diamondbacks, the first stop of their two-city, seven-day, six-game trek that ends this weekend with three games on the South Side of Chicago tonight also represents the Cubs final regular season game outside of Chicago city limits, as the Cubs will enjoy a seven-day, seven-game stay at Wrigley Field against Pittsburgh (4 games) and St. Louis (3 games) to end the year. In case you hadn t heard, tomorrow represents Chicago s first day off since August 20, when Daniel Murphy was still a member of the Nationals, as tonight wraps up a stretch of 30-schedueld-games-in-30-days overall, the Cubs will have a game scheduled on 40 of the final 41 days of the regular season. IS 400 WINS A LOT? IT SEEMS LIKE A LOT: Including the postseason, skipper Joe Maddon has now guided the Cubs to 400 wins since joining the organization prior to the 2015 campaign the Cubs have 381 regular season victories, by far the most in all of baseball in that span and a Cubs franchise record for most wins within a manager s first four years with the club, and 19 playoff wins, with the Cubs making three-straight NLCS appearances and winning the 2016 World Series, the only team in all of baseball to make the Final Four each of the last three years. Under Maddon, the Cubs have amassed a record after the All-Star Break, 86 games above.500, and the team s.654 winning percentage is the best in all of baseball by a very wide margin Cleveland is a distant second with a.609 mark ( ) in that span, which would represent a 13.0-game deficit in the mythical standings the Cardinals are the next closest N.L. team with a record, a whopping 22.5 games behind the Cubs in those same mythical standings. IN GOOD STANDING: Since finding themselves and 4.5-games behind Milwaukee in the N.L. Central Division when waking up on May 31, the Cubs have since gone an N.L. best (.606) in their last 99 games to make up 8.0 games in the standings over the second-place Milwaukee Brewers the Cubs have played 5.0 games better than the third-place St. Louis Cardinals in this span. RBI champ since Sammy Sosa had 160 RBI in Last night s production helped up Báez s season totals to 37 doubles, nine triples, 33 homers, 107 RBI and 21 stolen bases Báez is only the second player in major league history to reach those totals in a single season, joining Hank Aaron, who did so in 1961 with the Milwaukee Braves (39 2B, 10 3B, 34 HR, 120 RBI, 21 SB) somehow, that season only earned Aaron an eighth-place finish in N.L. MVP voting (though MVP Frank Robinson was pretty darn special that year). WELL ABOVE AVERAGE: Including another hit last night, Ben Zobrist now ranks third in the National League with a.314 batting average this season, trailing only Milwaukee s Christian Yelich (.317) and Cincinnati s Scooter Gennett (.316) the Cubs haven t had a Top 5 finish in N.L. batting average since Derrek Lee won the 2005 batting title with a.335 average. THE MIGHTY PEN: The Cubs bullpen boasts a 3.28 ERA this season, by far the lowest bullpen ERA in the National League, nearly a quarter point ahead of next-closest San Diego (3.51 ERA) the Cubs pen has limited foes to a.654 OPS against, also lowest in the National League. The Cubs have had four pitchers throw exclusively in relief and post sub-2.00 ERAs since the All-Star Break: Jesse Chavez (1.44 ERA), Carl Edwards, Jr. (1.71), Pedro Strop (1.77) and Jorge De La Rosa (1.80) in total, only 11 N.L. relievers have posted sub-2.00 ERAs since the Break (minimum 20.0 IP), and four, or 36 percent of them, have resided in the Cubs bullpen. Three different Cubs relievers (Randy Rosario, Jorge De La Rosa, Steve Cishek) recorded saves in three-straight team games (last Thursday-Saturday) for the second time this season it first happened June 7-9 vs. Philadelphia and Pittsburgh when Brandon Morrow, Pedro Strop and Cishek turned the trick. The team s last five saves have been picked up by five different Cubs relievers dating to Sept. 6 (Chavez, Strop, Rosario, De La Rosa and Cishek) the previous time that happened was May 23-31, 1991 when Paul Assenmacher, Heathcliff Slocumb, Chuck McElroy, Dave Smith and Les Lancaster saved the day. THERE IS A LOT LEFT: Cole Hamels tonight represents the 88th start by a Cubs southpaw this season, which is now approaching the singleseason club record only once in franchise history have the Cubs had more than 88 games started by left-handed pitchers in a single season when the 1966 made 89 such starts thanks to Ed Hartig. SCHEDULE STUFF: The Cubs are tied for the most home games (seven) remaining in baseball with seven other clubs, three of which reside in the National League: Arizona, Colorado and Washington. Chicago s.635 home winning percentage (47-27) leads the N.L. and is fourth best in the majors behind only Boston (54-21,.720), the Yankees (50-26,.658) and Tampa Bay (48-26,.649) the Cubs have won 16 of their last 24 home games dating to July 25. Chicago hosts N.L.
