Ventura extended his personal winning streak to five straight spanning his last seven starts, establishing a single-game career best with 11 strikeouts during his 6.0-inning stint...he gave up just two hits, while walking four and leaving with KC in charge by a 4-0 count...the redhot Mike Moustakas and heating up Alex Rios each contributed three hits to Kansas City s 12-hit afternoon as the Royals collected at least one hit in every inning...the win was KC s 15th in the last 20 games and returned the Royals to a season-best 29 games over coupled with the Twins loss here last night and Kansas City has returned to a 13-game lead in the Central, while the battle for home field in the postseason expanded to a 7-game lead over the Blue Jays. HE S BAAAAAAACK!!!--Yordano Ventura appears to have overcome some early season doldrums on the hill, as he won his fifth consecutive decision yesterday, spanning his last seven starts, while establishing a career best in strikeouts...the 24-year old fired 6.0 shutout innings over the Orioles, allowing only two hits, while walking four and fanning 11, eclipsing his previous career high of 10 set a season ago in San Diego... Ace has been most impressive over his last four starts, each quality in nature, going 3-0 with a 1.08 ERA, allowing only three earned runs in 25.0 innings, while fanning 32 and holding opposing hitters to a.167 average (15-for-90). A ZO MECOMING FOR BEN--Ben Zobrist spent the first nine seasons of his big league career wearing the uniform of the Tampa Bay Rays and tonight he dresses in the visiting clubhouse for the first time...acquired by the Royals on July 28 from the Athletics, Zobrist was on the disabled list with a left knee injury when Oakland visited St. Pete in late-may...the versatile switch-hitter had a pair of hits yesterday as the DH vs. Baltimore and is now batting.330 (31-for-94) in 26 games as a Royal... he has been most impressive when playing in Kauffman Stadium, hitting.429 (18-for-42) in 13 games in his new home, while reaching base at a.571 clip with 14 walks to go with his 18 hits. SNOWMEN IN THE SUMMER--Both Mike Moustakas and Alex Rios enter this visit to The Trop riding individual 8-game hitting streaks in which each are pushing the.500 mark during the skeins...each had three hits in yesterday s with over the Orioles, with Moose now hitting.452 (14-for-31) in his 8-gamer and Rios hammering the ball at a.483 clip (14-for-29) in his streak...moustakas has four doubles and four home runs among his 14 hits during the streak, while driving in 12 runs, including 11 RBI in his last five games...rios has three doubles and a triple during his streak while raising his season average 25 points to.257. AUGUST WINDING DOWN--Kansas City is now 17-8 this month which when completed will be the club s fifth consecutive winning month, a first for the franchise since the 1982 squad posted five straight to start the year before a September/October...dating back to last year, the Royals have enjoyed a franchise first seven straight regular season winning months, posting a combined ledger since the start of August, 2014, which is second only in that span to St. Louis at PEN BACK ON TOP--The bullpen was charged with all three runs that KC allowed yesterday, but still over the last 10 contests the pen has a 1.69 ERA, allowing seven earned runs in its last 37.1 innings...kansas City s bullpen remains on top in the American League in ERA with a 2.34 mark and just trails the Cardinals (2.32) for the big league lead...the Royals have also combined for a 26-8 record by their relief corps, easily the best winning percentage in baseball, at.765, while KC s 45 saves are thirdmost in the Majors, behind only the Cards (53) and Tampa Bay (49). TONIGHT S STARTING PITCHERS: RHP Edinson Volquez (11-7, 3.40) vs. Erasmo Ramirez (10-4, 3.66) Career Career Edinson Volquez vs. Rays Major League Record 11-7 (3.40 ERA) Erasmo Ramirez vs. Royals Major League Record 10-4 (3.66 ERA) EDINSON VOLQUEZ is making his team-leading 27th start of the season, his 212th career starting assignment and 217th overall appearance...he faces the Rays for the second time this year and fifth time in his career...volky signed a two-year free-agent contract with the Royals on December 29, AVOIDING DEFEAT IN BOSTON--Edinson allowed a season-high six earned runs in 6.2 innings last Sunday afternoon at Fenway Park, but escaped defeat when the Royals rallied for four in the ninth and an 8-6 victory...he also gave up a season high nine hits, but did not walk a man, marking the second time this year he s worked at least 6.0 frames with no freebies...through the first 5.0 innings, Volquez allowed just two-out RBI hits by Jackie Bradley, Jr. and Josh Rutledge in the second...he held a 4-2 lead going into the bottom of the sixth, however, Boston struck for two runs in the sixth and added pair on Volky s tab in the seventh, taking a 6-4 lead...teammates Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas provided two-run hits in the ninth, taking Edinson off the hook for a decision. KEEP ROLLIN --Despite a couple of rough outings, Volquez continues to be the Royals most consistent starting pitcher, entering tonight as the team leader in wins (11), innings pitched (158.2), strikeouts (119) and quality starts (14)...he recorded seven victories between June 10 and August 7, which were tied for the most in the Majors in that span...he s been one of the best in baseball over the last 14 months as since June 20, 2014, Volky has the fifth-best winning percentage (.714) in the Majors, going 20-8 with a 2.76 ERA, which ranks 13th, and a.237 opponents average. SWEET ESCAPE--Edinson has been at his best this season in pressure situations, holding the opposition to a.188 average (26-for-138) with runners in scoring position, ranking him third among qualifying A.L. hurlers...he s given up just five extra-base hits (all doubles) in those situations for the lowest opponents slugging percentage (.225) with RISP in the Majors. VS. RAYS---Volky faces Tampa Bay for the second time this season, taking a no-decision in the second game of a split doubleheader on July 7, a 7-1 KC win...in that outing, he allowed just one run on five hits, but was removed after throwing 101 pitches over the first 5.0 frames...he s 2-0 with a 2.49 ERA (7 ER in 25.1 IP) all-time against the Rays, earning an 8-1 victory here on June 23 of last season with Pittsburgh. 2 Pitching Notes Tomorrow s Starter - Kris Medlen = Kris makes his second start of the year and ninth overall appearance tomorrow evening...he earned his second victory of the season last Monday night, going 6.0 innings against Baltimore...Medlen also earned a win in relief on August 18, tossing a scoreless 13th inning in Cincinnati before the Royals scored two for a 3-1 win. = Medlen was efficient while working with a limited pitch count in his first start as a Royal, picking up an 8-3 victory over the O s. = He is facing Tampa for the first time in his career...despite his previous start against Baltimore, Kris has struggled against A.L.
