1 WASHINGTON NATIONALS (95-62) vs PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (63-95) Wednesday, September 27, 2017 Citizens Bank Park 7:05 EDT Game 159; Home 78 RHP Tanner Roark (13-10, 4.41) vs RHP Mark Leiter Jr. (3-6, 4.69) LAST NIGHT S ACTION: The Phillies defeated the Washington Nationals, 4-1, at CBP Starter Jake Thompson (W, 3-2), went 5.0 innings and allowed 1 run on 4 hits with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts The Phillies bullpen was exceptional (more below) and Cameron Rupp had a 2-run double. WHAT A RELIEF: Over their last 29 games (8/27-current), the Phils bullpen has posted a 2.63 ERA (30 ER, IP) which ranks 4 th in the majors behind only the Red Sox (2.14), Nationals (2.31) and Indians (2.33) In that same span, Philadelphia s relief corps has held opponents to a.207 AVG (4thbest in MLB) and.623 OPS (5 th -best in MLB). BROADSTREET BULLPEN: Last night, Philadelphia s relievers combined to toss 4.0 perfect innings for the first time since May 9, 2010 vs ATL, and recorded 9 SO in 4.0 perfect innings for the first time since at least 1913 The last ML team to strike out 9 batters in 4.0 or fewer perfect innings was the San Diego Padres on August 11, 2014 vs COL (4.0 IP, 9 SO) It also marked only the third time since at least 1913 that Philadelphia s bullpen struck out 9 or more batters in any game in which they pitched 4.0 or fewer innings (others: 8/20/14 vs SEA & 7/31/98 vs SF). HATS OFF FOR HECTOR: Phillies closer Hector Neris has successfully converted each of his last 19 save opportunities (since 6/28), the longest streak by a Phillies pitcher since Jonathan Papelbon also converted 19 straight, September 24, 2014 to July 24, 2015 Neris streak is currently the secondlongest active saves streak in the majors, trailing only WSH s Sean Doolittle (23 straight with OAK & WSH) If he successfully converts his next save opportunity, Neris would become the first Phillies pitcher with 20 straight saves since Papelbon, who also saved 20 in a row, September 9, 2012 to June 14, 2013 Neris ranks 8 th in the National League with 25 saves this season Neris, who appeared in 79 games last year and has made 70 appearances this season, is the first Phillies pitcher to make 70 or more appearances in consecutive seasons since Ryan Madson in 2008 (76) and 2009 (79). CITIZENS BANK SPARK: With just four games remaining in the 2017 season, the Phillies will finish out the year at Citizens Bank Park with one more game against the Nationals (1-1, 9/25-27) and three games against the Mets (9/29-10/1) Since the All-Star break, the Phillies are averaging 5.00 runs per game at home (180 R, 36 G), fourth-best among all National League clubs, trailing only the Cubs (6.32), Rockies (6.15) and Diamondbacks (5.47) The Phils are (.556) at home since the break after finishing the first half with a record at CBP (.390). FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS: This season, the Phillies have hit 98 home runs at Citizens Bank Park, their highest total at home since belting 108 dingers in 2009 Philadelphia has posted a.751 OPS at home in 2017, their highest mark since a.763 OPS in LEFT IS RIGHT AND RIGHT IS WRONG: This season, the Phillies are (.533) in 45 games where the opposition starts a left-handed pitcher Conversely, the Phils are (.345) in 113 contests when facing a right-handed starter. NATITUDE PROBLEM: With a win tonight, the Phillies would have two series victories at home against the Nationals this year, a feat they have not accomplished since 2014 (2-1, 5/2-4 & 3-0, 8/25-27) That said, Philadelphia has lost 23 of their last 31 games against the Nationals (5/30/16- current) and have been outscored over the 31-game stretch (-25, RPG) Philadelphia has a 1-8 series record against the Nats in that span, their only series win coming earlier this year at Citizens Bank Park (2-1, 4/7-9) However, 12 of Philadelphia s 23 losses to the Nationals in that stretch have been by one run, including four of their last five (5/14/17-current). SUMMER OF 17 SLUGFEST: Offensively, the Phillies have slugged 168 home runs this season, the club s most since 2009, when Philadelphia hit 224 homers that season which led the National League and was tied for second-most in the majors There have been 19 different Phillies to homer this season The last time 20 or more different players homered in a single season for the Phillies was 2012 (24 players) Additionally, Philadelphia has 483 extra-base hits this season, the club s most since 2010, when they cranked out 490 extra-base hits that year. SECOND-HALF SURGE: The Phillies have won 10 of their last 17 games (.588 %, 9/9-current) and 16 of their last 30 (.533 %, 8/27-current) Philadelphia is (.479) following the All-Star break after finishing the first half with a record (.333) The Phils need to win all four of their remaining games to become the first Phillies team since 1997 to post a.500 or better winning percentage following the All-Star break, after finishing the first half of the season 29 games or more under.500 ( & 44-33).
