Toronto Blue Jays (59-62) vs. Chicago Cubs (63-57) August 18, 2017 Wrigley Field Game No. 121 Home Game No. 60 LHP J.A. Happ (6-8, 3.63) vs. RHP Jake Arrieta (12-8, 3.73) THAT S WHY THEY CALL IT THE WINDY CITY: With the wind blowing out yesterday, the Cubs and Reds combined for 23 runs and eight homers, both the most in a game at Wrigley Field this season... Cincinnati jumped out to a big lead with a nine-run second inning, then saw that advantage vanish over the next four innings the Reds then reclaimed the lead for good and won a wild, contest. Chicago accounted for six of the game s eight homers, one shy of tying the franchise record, done three times prior to yesterday s home run barrage, the Cubs most recently teed off for six home runs in a regular season game August 2, 2011 at Pittsburgh. Was the club s fifth-ever loss when hitting at least six home runs and first since the well-known 23-22, 10-inning loss to the Phillies on May 17, 1979 snapped a nine-game winning streak when hitting six home runs. Included in the home run outburst was the Northsiders first set of back-toback-to-back home runs (Alex Avila, Ian Happ and Javier Báez) since September 15, 2004, when Derrek Lee, Sammy Sosa and Michael Barrett pulled off the feat vs. Pittsburgh was the 11th instance in franchise history. SORREY IT S BEEN SO LONG : The Cubs and Blue Jays today open their secondever series at Wrigley Field... the Cubs entertained Toronto from June 6-8, 2005, making today s visit to the Friendly Confines the Jays first in 12 years and 71 days... that is the second-longest gap between games at Wrigley Field by any opponent in ballpark history, trailing only the Royals 13-year, 316-day exile from After today s game, the Minnesota Twins will be the lone remaining squad yet to visit the Cubs in this decade (last played at Wrigley Field on June 14, 2009). The Jays three games at Wrigley Field are the fewest by any current MLB team the Orioles, Red Sox, Athletics and Mariners are tied for the second-fewest visits to Wrigley with six games played here apiece. BUT IT S GOOD TO BE BACK, EH?: Current Blue Jay and 2012 N.L. Gold Glovewinning Cubs second baseman Darwin Barney today makes his return to Wrigley Field following an almost-three-year hiatus... the Cubs fourth-round pick in the 2007 draft spent first four-and-a-half big league seasons with the Cubs before being traded to the Dodgers, July 28, 2014 has made one appearance as a visitor at the Friendly Confines, September 19, 2014 with Los Angeles. Miguel Montero today also will head to the visitor s clubhouse at Wrigley Field for the first time since 2014 he last sat in the away dugout on April 24, 2014 with Arizona Montero caught two-and-a-half seasons in Chicago, highlighted by a key RBI single in the 10th inning of the Cubs World Series-clinching Game Seven win in Cleveland. Today s starting pitcher, J.A. Happ, also makes a homecoming of sorts the lefty hails from Spring Valley, Illinois, just over 100 miles from Wrigley Field he played college ball eight miles up Sheridan Road at Northwestern University. IF YOU RE HAPP-IAN YOU KNOW IT, HOMER TWICE: Ian Happ (no relation to J.A.) crushed two solo homers in yesterday s ballgame, making him just the second Cubs player since at least 1913 to tally three multi-homer games within his first 78- career games played, joining teammate Kyle Schwarber.
