The Sox conclude the trip with four games at New York... they opened the trip by losing two out of three games at Cleveland and splitting a four-game series at Detroit. Chicago has surpassed its road win total from last year, and needs two wins to surpass its overall win total from TONIGHT S STORYLINES Chicago is (.583) on the road since 6/30 ( edge in run scored), tied for the fi fth-best road mark in MLB. Sox starters own a 2.61 ERA (15 ER/51.2 IP) in the last eight games, allowing three earned runs or less seven times. Chris Sale needs 11 strikeouts to pass Ed Walsh (269 in 1908) for the single-season franchise record he is 0-3 with a 4.15 (14 ER/30.1 IP) and.299 average over his last fi ve starts. Jose Abreu needs one homer and four RBI to join Albert Pujols ( ) as the only players in history to hit 30-plus homers with 100-plus RBI in each of his fi rst two major-league seasons. The White Sox are hitting.192 (49-255) with 21 extra-base hits (five homers) and 20 runs scored (2.5 R/G) over the last eight games they have scored three runs or less six times. YESTERDAY S RECAP Detroit scored all seven runs over the fi rst four innings in its 7-4 win over Chicago, earning a four-game series split. The Tigers scored two runs in the fi rst, four in the third and one in the fourth off White Sox starter Frankie Montas Victor Martinez hit a two-run homer in the opening frame. Montas (6 ER/3.0 IP) suffered the loss in his fi rst career start Daniel Webb (1.0 IP), Zach Putnam (1.0) and Dan Jennings (1.0) combined for 3.0 scoreless and hitless IP in relief. Melky Cabrera (3-4) hit a two-run homer in the fourth, the 100th of his career Alexei Ramirez went 1-4 with a RBI. SALE S SIGNIFICANT STRIKEOUTS Chris Sale is on pace to record a club-record 276 strikeouts, which would be the most in the major leagues since Arizona s Randy Johnson struck out 290 in Sale s 259 strikeouts in 2015 rank second in baseball (Kershaw, 274) and are the second-highest total in club history. He needs four strikeouts to reach 1,000 career and become the fi fth-fastest pitcher, and sixth overall, since 1974 to reach the milestone in IP or less, joining Billy Wagner (757.2), Octavio Dotel (820.1), Francisco Rodriguez (827.1), Kerry Wood (853.0) and Tim Lincecum (896.1) source: STATS LLC. Sale is attempting to join Ed Walsh (1908, 11) as the only pitchers in Sox history to lead the majors in strikeouts. SALE-ING SEASON Chris Sale leads the American League in strikeouts (259), strikeouts per 9.0 IP (1.97), and SO/BB ratio (1st, 6.48), is tied for fourth in quality starts (21) and ranks eighth in WHIP (1.09). His 13 starts with 10-plus strikeouts in 2015 are the most since Randy Johnson in 2004 (13) Johnson (15 in 2002) and Curt Schilling (14 in 2002) were the last pitchers to record double-digit strikeouts 14 or more times in a season. Sale struck out 10-plus in eight straight starts from 5/23-6/30, tied for the longest streak ever (Pedro Martinez, 8/19-9/27/99). He struck out 10-plus in seven straight road starts from 5/12-7/11, the fi rst pitcher since 1900 to accomplish the feat. COMFORTS OF THE ROAD The White Sox are (.583) on the road since 6/30, tied for the fi fth-best road mark in the major leagues the Sox have limited the opposition to three runs or less 22 times. Chicago went over its fi rst 41 games on the road the Sox 35 road wins this season are its most since 2012 (40-41). WHITE SOX VS. NEW YORK YANKEES The Yankees lead the season series, 2-1, after winning two of three games at U.S. Cellular Field from 7/31-8/2. The White Sox are hitting.308 (33-107) with fi ve home runs, an 8.67 ERA (26 ER/27.0 IP) and have been outscored, Chicago has lost four of the last five games after winning eight straight from 8/20/12-5/23/14 (including two sweeps).
