1 edia Information Media Relations Department 198 Union Avenue Memphis, Tennessee Phone: Memphis Redbirds (21-12) vs. El Paso Chihuahuas (16-17) Thursday, May 11 7:05 p.m. (CT) AutoZone Park (10,000) Memphis, Tennessee Game #34 Home Game #13 (7-5) RHP Arturo Reyes (4-0, 1.33) vs. RHP Matt Magill (2-2, 2.38) THE GAME TODAY S GAME: The Memphis Redbirds open up an eightgame homestand with a four-game series against the El Paso Chihuahuas (Padres). Memphis has won 11 of 12, including a 7-1 road trip, while El Paso is coming off three straight wins at Nashville. Today s game will be broadcast live on Sports56 and 87.7 FM and internet webcast at MemphisRedbirds.com, with Steve Selby on the call. ON THE HILL: Arturo Reyes toes the rubber for the Redbirds in the series opener. Reyes has been dominant since joining the rotation full-time, allowing two earned runs in three starts. In his last appearance on Friday vs Omaha, Reyes tied a career high with eight scoreless frames and ceded just four hits. He has yet to allow more than one earned run in any appearance this year, including his three piggyback outings of MLB rehabber Tyler Lyons to begin the year. El Paso sends righthander Matt Magill to the hill. Magill is coming off his toughest start of the season, allowing four runs on six hits in five innings in a loss to Albuquerque on Friday. Prior to his relatively tough outing, Magill had not allowed more than two earned runs in any outing and held a 1.55 ERA. The righthander signed with San Diego in the offseason after spending last year in the Reds organization and reaching the majors for five appearances with Cincinnati. SCHEDULE WITH EL PASO: The Redbirds and Chihuahuas meet for their only series of the 2017 season. Last year, Memphis dropped three of four in El Paso and is just 5-7 all-time against the Chihuahuas. The only prior meeting at AutoZone Park came in 2015 when El Paso swiped three of four. However, the Chihuahuas did make an appearance at AutoZone Park last year, playing in the 2016 Gildan Triple-A National Championship game as the PCL champions. BIRD BITES THIS DATE IN REDBIRDS HISTORY (May 11, 2005): Hector Luna and Peter Zoccolillo both hit two home runs, each with a grand slam, to lead the Redbirds over Las Vegas, The pair hit back-to-back blasts in the 7th inning. Luna finished with 6 RBIs in the game and Zoccolillo finished with five. THE SEASON ABOUT THE LAST ONE: The Memphis Redbirds saw their 11-game winning streak come to an end on Tuesday in Des Moines, falling to the Iowa Cubs 3-1. Memphis lone tally came on a Todd Cunningham RBI single in the top of the fifth, which also extended his hitting streak to 13 games. Starting pitcher Daniel Poncedeleon exited in the bottom of the second inning after taking a batted ball to the head. TURNED UP TO ELEVEN: Memphis 11-game winning streak, the longest in franchise history, was snapped on Tuesday. The Redbirds outscored opponents during the run, scoring at least four runs nine times and limiting the opponent to two runs or fewer on seven occasions. Memphis dominated on both sides of the diamond, hitting.330 with 19 homers over the stretch while averaging 7.4 runs per game. On the mound, Redbird pitchers posted a 3.43 ERA and a 3.19 K-to-BB ratio (83 K to 26 BB). The wins came in a variety of ways for Memphis, with seven of the 11 decided by three runs or fewer, five victories coming from behind, three last at-bat triumphs, and two wins in extra innings. THE FINE PRINT: The Redbirds are tied for the second-most wins in MiLB with 21 (Dayton, Reds Single-A, 22-11)... 2 HOME COOKING: Memphis has played the fewest home games in the Pacific Coast League with only 12 contests at AutoZone Park so far this year. The Redbirds just completed a stretch with 16 of their previous 21 games on the road, but will now play 23 of the next 35 in the Bluff City. The Redbirds have made the most of their brief homestands, posting 45 extra-base hits, including 20 home runs. The Redbirds hit 49 homers all of last season at home. The last home series against Round Rock increased the team s batting average at home by 65 points to.267. Memphis is slugging 54 points better at home (.496) compared to on the road (.442). OFFENSIVE OASIS: Memphis offense has reached new heights over the past two weeks, pounding out 89 runs on 151 hits for a.322 team average in the last 13 games. The team s average has increased 36 points during the 13 contests from.237 to.273. Prior to this stretch, Memphis had reached doubledigit hits in just six of its first 20 games, something it has now done in nine of the last 13 games. The Birds have at least six hits in 12 of their last 13 (1 hit in rain-shortened 5-inning win on 4/29). In the stretch, Memphis has 29 doubles, seven triples, and 22 homers, good for a.556 team slugging percentage. TURN THE BEAT AROUND: After registering just one quality start in the first 14 games of the season, Memphis starters have tallied 10 quality starts and a complete game in the last 19 contests. The Redbird rotation already has more quality starts in May (6) than it did in April (5). Entering a doubleheader on April 21, Memphis starters held a 5.72 ERA (39 ER/61.1 IP) through the first 14 games. Since then, though, Redbirds starters have yielded just 35 ER in IP for a 3.08 ERA. Overall, Memphis team ERA has dropped from 5.09 to 4.22 over the stretch. Perhaps more importantly, Redbird starters are working deeper into games, averaging 5.39 innings per start over the last 19 games. Comparatively, starters worked an average of 4.38 innings in the season s first 14 games. MEMPHIS MASHERS: The Redbirds have made their power presence known at the plate, connecting on a league-leading 41 home runs entering today s game, including 22 in the past 13 contests. The Redbirds have reassumed the top spot on the PCL leaderboard and became the first team in MiLB to cross the 40-homer threshold. Monday marked the third time this year that Memphis hit four blasts in a game. Patrick Wisdom became the fifth different Redbird to post a multi-homer game, also posting the team s first grand slam. The Redbirds are way ahead of their pace from a season ago when the squad did not hit its 41st homer until game 64, which came on June 16. EXTRA, EXTRA: The Redbirds have posted 307 hits in the first 33 games of the season, including 120 extrabase hits (70 doubles, nine triples, 41 home runs), which is tops in the PCL. Memphis tied a seasonhigh with nine extra-base hits in Monday night s win. The Redbirds have vaulted to seventh in the league in hitting (.273), and now rank second in total bases (518) and third in slugging percentage (.460). CLEAN LIVING: The Redbirds did not commit a single error in their four-game series against Iowa, tying the longest streak this season. After allowing 10 unearned runs in April, the Birds have yielded just one unearned tally in nine games this month. STARTING OUT QUICK: The Redbirds have scored 19 runs in the first inning and 20 runs in the second inning of games, which are two of their most fruitful frames of the season (5th, 23). Memphis has scored first in 21 of its initial 32 games this season, which is the most in the PCL. The Redbirds have struck first in seven of their last nine games and are now 14-7 in those contests, which is the eighth-best mark in the league. El Paso is 11-4 when scoring the game s first run, tied for the thirdbest record in the loop. The Redbirds have scored the game s final run 14 times and are 13-1 in such games, the second-best mark in the circuit (Colorado Springs, 14-1). RUN, RUN, RUNAWAY: The Redbirds are 16-for-36 in steal attempts and have been picked off 11 times. The 20 caught stealings are the most in the PCL, with no other squad having been caught more than 16 times (Salt Lake, 41-for-57). MEMPHIS PLAYERS AND COACHES STRIKING NEW GROUND: Arturo Reyes and Daniel Poncedeleon have become quite the unexpected 1-2 punch at the top of the Redbirds rotation considering Reyes began the year in a piggyback role and Poncedeleon didn t start the season with Memphis. Thanks to his strong eight-inning outing Friday, Reyes leads the league in opponents average (.173) and is tied for third in wins (4). He also ranks fifth in the league in ERA (1.33) and third in WHIP (0.85). Poncedeleon is currently tied for ninth in the PCL in ERA (2.17), but was placed on the DL today after taking a batted ball to the head on Tuesday. CUNNINGHAM S NEW GROOVE: Todd Cunningham has settled into a nice rhythm with his new organization, currently riding a team season-best 13- game hitting streak. During the stretch, he is batting.375 (21-for-56, 3 2B, 2 3B, HR, 13 R, 10 RBI) and has increased his average 140 points to.292. The stretch is the third-longest active in the PCL and the second-longest of Cunningham s career, trailing a 16-game burst from June 2-21, 2012 when he played for Double-A Mississippi (Braves). EN FUEGO: Breyvic Valera was a revelation for Memphis a year ago, hitting.341 in 73 games. After a slow start to this year (.193 through 15 games), Valera has found his stroke in his last 12 outings, going 19-for-42 (.452) in the stretch with two doubles and four triples. Valera has six multi-hit games in his last 12 contests after doing so just once in his first 15 games. Last year, he tied for second on the team with 20 multi-hit games. Additionally, Valera has now hit safely in nine straight games, a new season-high. CLEAR THE DE-CK: Paul DeJong ranked second in the Cardinals system last year with 22 homers and has brought his power to Triple-A this year. The infielder is tied for the team lead with seven homers, six of which have come in his last 12 games. During that time, DeJong has collected 14 RBI, highlighted by three straight multi-rbi games vs Iowa. He had just one homer and six RBI in his first 19 games of the year before finding his recent success. PEARLS OF WISDOM: Patrick Wisdom has been an offensive catalyst for Memphis recently, collecting 17 hits in his last 12 games, including five multi-hit affairs. Eight of the 17 hits have gone for extra bases, featuring six home runs. Wisdom saw his nine-game hitting streak come to an end Tuesday, a stretch that increased his batting average 44 points to.291. Monday marked Wisdom s fourth career multi-homer game and remarkably the second that included a game-winning grand slam. He also accomplished the feat with Double-A Springfield on June 15, 2015 when he hit a go-ahead game-winning grand slam in the 10th inning at Tulsa as part of an 8-4 win. Wisdom battled injuries a season ago and appeared in just 78 games for Memphis and hit five home runs. He has already surpassed that total with seven blasts in 31 contests this season. HE IS ONE WITH THE FORCE: Opening Day starter Luke Weaver missed 22 games with a back injury, but it has not slowed him down at all. In three starts this season, Weaver has not allowed a run or walked a batter in 15 innings of work. Weaver was named the PCL Pitcher of the Week Monday after combining to throw 13 scoreless frames against Omaha and Iowa this week. VOIT OF CONFIDENCE: The St. Louis Cardinals tabbed Luke Voit as the organization s Minor League Player of the Month for April, his second straight month winning the award (August 16 with Springfield). Voit hit.360 with five homers and 16 RBI in 23 April games. Overall, he led the Birds in AVG, H (27), 2B (tie, 7), 3B (tie, 1), HR, OBP (.448), SLG (.680), and OPS (1.128) in April. PROSPECTING: The Cardinals organization has seen a steady growth in its prospect ranking the last three years, elevating from 15th to 14th to 12th this season, according to Baseball America. While top prospect Alex Reyes is sidelined for the season, five of the top 30 prospects tabbed by the publication are currently on the Redbirds roster. That includes Luke Weaver (#2), Carson Kelly (#4), Harrison Bader (#7), Paul DeJong (#14), and Breyvic Valera (#29).
