4 MTBSA SAFETY MISSION Manheim Township Baseball and Softball Association is committed to a fun, safe and healthy environment for all players of every level. The Association will: Provide training to coaches and volunteers Educate and communicate with the coaches and volunteers the importance of safety Continually review the impact that safety has on the Association Seek new ways to ensure the safety of our future players
5 MTBSA SAFETY PROGRAM The following are the safety guidelines for MTBSA. These Guidelines are to be followed by all players, coaches, and volunteers that are participating in or a spectator of, any and all MTBSA sponsored events: Responsibility for all safety procedures belongs to every adult member of MTBSA. Each player, coach, umpire and volunteer shall use proper reasoning and care to prevent injury to him/her and to others. Only MTBSA approved coaches may hold scheduled practices. Only MTBSA approved coaches will supervise scheduled practices. Coaches will have an understanding of basic first aid. First aid kits will be available at every field. Field conditions determined to be unsafe due to weather will not be played on until conditions improve. Playing areas will be inspected before every game by the coaches and umpires. Coaches are responsible for keeping the field free of loose equipment. There must be pre-game warm-ups prior to every game. Equipment must be inspected by the coaches prior to every game. At no time will horse play be allowed on the playing field or spectator area. All male players are encouraged to wear protective cups. All catchers MUST WEAR protective cups. Coaches are responsible for the safety of the players on the team and will NEVER leave them unattended at anytime during practices and games. Never hesitate to report any present or potential safety hazards to the MTBSA Safety Officer. Drugs or alcohol are not permitted at any MTBSA field. SMOKING is not permitted at any MTBSA field. All volunteers are required to fill out a Volunteer Application for a criminal background check. Publish and distribute a safety manual to volunteers.
6 COACHES RESPONSIBILITIES Take possession of these Safety Policies and Safety Equipment provided by MTBSA. Teach the fundamentals of baseball while advocating safety. At least one coach from each team must attend a coach s clinic. At least one coach from each team must attend a safety clinic. Cover the basic of safe play with his/her players. Encourage players to have a drink with them at all times. Encourage players to use sunscreen. Warm-up players prior to practices and games. No jewelry is to be worn by players during games. Maintain a safe playing environment during practices and games- equipment to be stored safely. Follow MTBSA Safety Policies. Report any injury to MTBSA Safety Officer. All LL coaches must follow LL rules at all times. ANY COACH WHO KNOWINGLY DISREGARDS SAFETY AND THE SAFETY POLICIES OF MTBSA WILL BE CALLED BEFORE THE BOARD AND IS SUBJECT TO BEING REMOVED FROM HIS/ HER POSITION.

17 ACCIDENT REPORTING PROCEDURES WHAT TO REPORT: Any incident that causes any player, coach or volunteer to receive medical treatment and/or first aid MUST be reported to the Safety Officer. WHEN TO REPORT: All incidents MUST be reported to the Safety Officer within 24 hours. Safety Officer Tom Rudzinski A written report must also be completed and turned into your League Director.

19 EQUIPMENT SAFETY Equipment Manager: Check all equipment before distributing for the season. Inspect catcher s headgear, shin guards, and chest protectors. Inspect batting helmets for cracks and missing padding. All fields must have disengaging bases. All fields must be equipped with first aid kits. MTBSA Equipment Manger Dave Boyer Coaches: Inspect your equipment before the season starts. Inspect your equipment prior to EVERY game. Any damaged equipment must be returned and replaced. NEVER USE DAMAGED EQUIPMENT.

21 Concussion Information A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that is caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or body. Most concussions occur without a loss of consciousness. A suspected concussion is serious, no matter where or how it occurred. Returning to a sport too soon will make their symptoms last longer and put them at higher risk for a more severe injury. SIGNS of a concussion (What you can see): Appears dazed, stunned, or disoriented Forgets plays or demonstrates short term memory difficulty Exhibits difficulty with balance or coordination Answers questions slowly or inaccurately Loses consciousness Behavior or personality changes SYMPTOMS of a concussion (What the player reports): Headache Nausea/Vomiting Balance problems or dizziness Double vision or changes in vision Sensitivity to light or sound/noise Feeling sluggish or foggy Difficulty with concentrating and short term memory CONCUSSION ACTION PLAN 1) Immediately remove player from play 2) Have the player evaluated by a health care professional 3) Inform the parents/guardian and provide them with information regarding concussions 4) Keep out of play until evaluated and cleared by a health care professional WHEN IN DOUBT, SIT THEM OUT!
22 Immediate care for a concussion, including calling 911 or getting them player to an emergency room, should be provided for the following signs and symptoms: Decreased level of consciousness Drowsy or cannot be awakened Cannot get their attention Irregular breathing Severe or worsening headache Persistent vomiting or seizures
