1 LECTURE HOUR-19 TE-1(10CV56) UNIT-3 (HIGHWAY GEOMETRIC DESIGN -1) Width of carriage way: Width of the carriage way or the width of the pavement depends on the width of the traffic lane and number of lanes. Width of a traffic lane depends on the width of the vehicle and the clearance. Side clearance improves operating speed and safety. The maximum permissible width of a vehicle is 2.44 and the desirable side clearance for single lane traffic is 0.68 m. This requiresminimum of lane width of 3.75 m for a single lane road However, the side clearance required is about 0.53 m, on both side and 1.06 m in the center. Therefore, a two lane road require minimum of 3.5 meter for each lane.the desirable carriage way width recommended by IRC is given in Table below.

2 Kerbs: Kerbs indicate the boundary between the carriage way and the shoulder or islands or footpaths. 1. Low or mountable kerbs: This type of kerbs is provided such that they encourage the traffic to remain in the through traffic lanes and also allow the driver to enter the shoulder area with little difficulty. The height of this kerb is about 10 cm above the pavement edge with a slope which allows the vehicle to climb easily. This is usually provided at medians and channelization schemes and also helps in longitudinal drainage. 2. Semi-barrier type kerbs:when the pedestrian traffic is high, these kerbs are provided. Their height is 15 cm above the pavement edge. This type of kerb

3 prevents encroachment of parking vehicles, but at acute emergency it is possible to drive over this kerb with some difficulty. 3. Barrier type kerbs:they are designed to discourage vehicles from leaving the pavement. They are provided when there is considerable amount of pedestrian traffic. They are placed at a height of 20 cm above the pavement edge with a steep batter. 4. Submerged kerbs:they are used in rural roads. The kerbs are provided at pavement edges between the pavement edge and shoulders. They provide lateral confinement and stability to the pavement.

4 Road margins: The portion of the road beyond the carriageway and on the roadway can be generally called road margin. Various elements that form the road margins are given below.

Shoulders: Shoulders are provided along the road edge and is intended for accommodation of stopped vehicles, serve as an emergency lane for vehicles and provide lateral support for base and surface courses. The shoulder should be strong enough to bear the weight of a fully loaded truck even in wet conditions. The shoulder width should be adequate for giving working space around a stopped vehicle. It is desirable to have a width of 4.6 m for the shoulders. A minimum width of 2.5 m is recommended for 2-lane rural highways in India. 2. Parking lanes: Parking lanes are provided in urban lanes for side parking. Parallel parking is preferred because it is safe for the vehicles moving on the road. The parking lane should have a minimum of 3.0 m width in the case of parallel parking.

6 Types of on street parking: I. Parallel parking:the vehicles are parked along the length of the road. Here there is no backward movement involved while parking or un parking the vehicle. Hence, it is the safest parking from the accident perspective. However, it consumes the maximum curb length and therefore only a minimum number of vehicles can be parked for a given kerbed length. This method of parking produces least obstruction to the on-going track on the road since least road width is used. II. 30 o angled parking: In thirty degree parking, the vehicles are parked at 30 with respect to the road alignment. In this case, more vehicles can be parked compared to parallel parking. Also there is better maneuver-ability. Delay caused to the track is also minimum in this type of parking. III. 45 o angled parking: As the angle of parking increases, more number of vehicles can be parked. Hence compared to parallel parking and thirty degree parking, more number of vehicles can be accommodated in this type of parking. IV. 60 o angled parking: as shownbelow diagram V. Right angled parking: In right angle parking or 90parking, the vehicles are parked perpendicular to the direction of the road. Although it consumes maximum width kerbed length required is very little. In this type of parking, the vehicles need complex maneuvering and this may cause severe accidents. This arrangement causes obstruction to the road track particularly if the road width is less. However, it can accommodate maximum number of vehicles for a given kerbed length.

7 Types of off-street parking: i. Surface car parking. ii. Multi-storey car parking iii. Roof parks iv. Mechanical car parks v. Underground car parks 3. Bus-bays: Bus bays are provided by recessing the kerbs for bus stops. They are provided so that they do not obstruct the movement of vehicles in the carriage way. They

8 should be at least 75 meters away from the intersection so that the traffic c near the intersections is not affected by the bus-bay. 4. Servic Bus-bays: Bus bays are provided by recessing the kerbs for bus stops. They are provided so that they do not obstruct the movement of vehicles in the carriage way. 9 5. Service roads: Service roads or frontage roads give access to access controlled highways like freeways and expressways. They run parallel to the highway and will be usually isolated by a separator and access to the highway will be provided only at selected points. These roads are provided to avoid congestion in the expressways and also the speed of the traffic in those lanes is not reduced. 6. Lay bay: These are provided near the public conveniences with guide map to enable driver to stop clear off the carriageway. It has 3m width, 30m length with 15m end tapers on both sides. 7. Frontage road: These are provided to give access to properties along an important highway with control access to express way or free way, It may run parallel to the highway and are isolated by separator.

10 8. Driveway: It connect the highway with commercial establishment like fuel stations, service stations etc It should be located away from the intersection. 9. Cycle track: Cycle tracks are provided in urban areas when the volume of cycle traffic is high Minimum width of 2 meter is required, which may be increased by 1 meter for every additional track.

11 10. Service roads: Service roads or frontage roads give access to access controlled highways like freeways and expressways. These roads are provided to avoid congestion in the expressways and also the speed of the traffic in those lanes is not reduced. 11. Footpath: Footpaths are exclusive right of way to pedestrians, especially in urban areas. They are provided for the safety of the pedestrians when both the pedestrian traffic and vehicular traffic is high. Minimum width is 1.5 meter and may be increased based on the traffic. The footpath should be either as smooth as the pavement or smoother than that to induce the pedestrian to use the footpath.

12 7. Guard rails: They are provided at the edge of the shoulder usually when the road is on an embankment. They serve to prevent the vehicles from running off the embankment, especially when the height of the fill exceeds 3 m. various designs of guard rails are there. Guard stones painted in alternate black and white are usually used. They also give better visibility of curves at night under headlights of vehicles.

13 Traffic separators or median: objectives of traffic seperators The main function is to prevent head on collision between the vehicle moving in opposite direction. Channelize traffic into streams at intersection. Segregate slow traffic and to protect pedestrians. IRC recommends a minimum desirable width of 5 m and may be reduce to 3 m where land is restricted. The minimum width of median in urban area is 1.2m.
