2 3 million mapping project to transform road improvements and maintenance 25 February Transport Minister Robert Goodwill said: This government is backing schemes that will make Britain s transport system world-class. This mapping project has the potential to substantially improve how we look after our roads. It will help make journeys more efficient and ensure traffic keeps moving. This funding demonstrates our commitment to funding the technology of the future, which will drive economic growth and create jobs.
3 Highways Network This project brings together intelligence from Integrated Transport Network (ITN) National Street Gazetteer (NSG) Local Street Gazetteer (LSG) Trunk Road Street Gazetteer (TRSG) Other information held by government Aims To create a common authoritative view of the road network May 2015
4 The Department s Annual Report states: Quick, efficient and reliable transport links are absolutely essential for people and businesses. The Department for Transport is the lead government department for this project The DfT needs a highly accurate representation of the road network that contains accurate information to allow: Managing policies Producing statistics Allocating funding Supporting legislation Other Government departments

6 The local highway network is the country s most valuable public asset. Valued in excess of 400 billion Source: Action for Roads, network for the 21st century July 2013 However, the Department lacks a definitive understanding of the road network due to gaps in knowledge e.g. Ownership (e.g. identifying private roads) Road classification Speed limits Evidence based policy making Q - How much of the road network has three lanes?
