4 1Pavement Rehabilitation: Products, Processes, and Strategies February 9, 2017, Arrowwood Lodge at Brainerd Lakes, 6967 Lake Forest Road, Baxter, MN February 15, 2017, City of Blaine Public Works, st Avenue NE, Blaine, MN February 17, 2017, MnDOT District 6, th Street NW, Rochester, MN Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. Workshop is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Workshop Description This workshop is designed to provide an overview of the available technology and tools that make implementing an effective pavement rehabilitation program feasible. A successful pavement rehabilitation program encompasses a full range of rehabilitation strategies as well as maintenance treatments, with the goal of enhancing pavement performance (ride, quality, safety, service life, etc.) and life (LCC, pavement durability). Additionally, the workshop will introduce some new pavement rehabilitation techniques. Topics Covered Techniques for asphalt and concrete pavement evaluation, including pavement condition rating Discussion of how to select the best rehabilitation strategy: choose the right process at the right time on the right project Overview of the various rehabilitation processes and their construction practices: asphalt reclamation, cold-in-place recycling, overlays, inlays, and new technology or processes; concrete rehabilitation, overlays, and new technology or processes Overview of material properties: how they are used and how to get the best performance from them Introduction to pavement and network performance measures and specifications Who Should Attend Engineers, managers, supervisors, and technicians responsible for pavement maintenance, design, and construction. Workshop Instructors David Rettner, PE, American Engineering and Testing, has worked with DOTs and local government agencies in several states on pavement rehabilitation, maintenance, and reconstruction projects using concrete, bituminous, and aggregate surfacing materials. As a former MnDOT Pavement, Geotechnical, and Research Engineer and with over 13 years of private sector consulting engineering experience, Rettner provides expertise and experience in the evaluation of pavements as well as the design and successful construction of numerous rehabilitation projects.
5 Dan Wegman, PE, has worked with DOTs and local governments in several states with pavement rehabilitation and preventive maintenance strategies. As a former MnDOT construction and bituminous engineer and with over fifteen years working as a private sector material supplier and pavement consultant, Wegman provides technical insight with respect to materials, construction, and implementation. Registration and Fees The registration fee includes lunch, coffee breaks, and program materials. A refund of the registration fee, minus a $30 cancellation fee, will be made if cancellation is received five working days prior to the workshop. Disability accommodations are available upon request. Professional Development Hours (6.0 PDHs) Roads Scholar Program (1.0 Required) 2Concrete Pavement Rehabilitation for Local Streets and Roads Student class limit: 35 April 26 27, 2017, City of Minneapolis, Currie Center, 1220 Currie Avenue North, Minneapolis, MN Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. Day one is scheduled from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Day two is scheduled from 8:00 a.m. to noon Workshop Description This workshop will cover all aspects of rehabilitation for concrete pavements, concrete curb and gutter, and median sidewalk pavement. The LRRB specifications have been incorporated into the MnDOT standard plates. This class will cover all the repairs including recommendations on when to use low-volume full-depth repairs or the MnDOT high-volume full-depth repairs. The workshop includes two field reviews: one to determine what to repair, and the other to review actual concrete rehabilitation repairs constructed in 2012 on 22nd Street around Seward School in Minneapolis, MN, including diamond grinding.
6 Topics Covered Introduction to concrete pavements and CPR plates Training with the standard plates in the field Review 1970s city street concrete pavement needing repair Review of city streets repaired in 2012 including diamond grinding Review of team reports of field survey Who Should Attend County or city engineers or their technical staff who have responsibility for maintaining concrete pavements and associated concrete structures. Workshop Instructors Daniel P. Frentress, PE, Frentress Enterprises, LLC, owns a consulting business specializing in concrete training and research of concrete pavements. He is an instructor in the ACI MnDOT certification program for the Aggregate and Ready Mix Association of Minnesota. Gordy Bruhn, MnDOT Concrete Office, Concrete Field Engineering Specialist. His job involves helping DOT and other government agencies to determine the correct concrete repair and concrete rehabilitation plans and specifications. Gary Orlich, PE, is an instructor in the MnDOT Certification program and an ACI examiner for the Aggregate and Ready Mix Association of Minnesota. He also has done personal service contracts with the cities of Columbia Heights and Minneapolis, helping them with concrete rehabilitation projects.
