Through scientific studies, we realized early on that obtaining accurate values during measurement could only be obtained with reliable calibration. During the last five decades, every one of our test bikes has been equipped with our calibration system to guarantee quality and accuracy. Today, Monark has the only products in the world that allow users to check the load before, during and after a test. Why is accuracy so important? When performing test measurements and comparing values, it is necessary to have a reliable and reproducible degree of accuracy. For us, it is a question of confidence; someone who uses an uncontrolled test instrument may have accurate values at one time and then completely inaccurate the next. Simple changes such as variations of room temperature can greatly affect the accuracy of electronically controlled testing devices. With Monark products, the user is guaranteed accurate values at all times. Best of all, our unique calibration weight system makes it easy for anyone to use at anytime! Calibration The Monark Way! By definition, calibrate is- to determine, check or rectify the graduation of any instrument giving quantitative measurements, using another accurate instrument. Our calibration weight system is the only affordable and reliable way to guarantee calibration. Using controlled weights checked by the National Institute for Material Testing, Monark provides a quick and simple solution for insuring accurate calibration. In the testing world, the term calibration is often abused or misunderstood. It is important to recognize that calibration is not as simple as pushing a button or pulling a lever. With each testing ergometer manufactured, we work to continue education on the benefits of calibration. Calibration is the foundation of Monark Sports and Medical. Our calibration method was perfected over fifty years ago and as we continue to release innovative products, our calibration will always remain constant. 2 3

3 THE ORIGINAL AT MEASUREMENT The VO2 standard research showing that 2.8 litres of VO2 is reached at 200 watts (which among other professor P-O Åstrand developed), is based studies using a Monark ergometer. The friction that occurs in the transmission i.e. chain pedals and crankshaft must be added in the calculation since Monark measures the workload at the flywheel. On a Monark, 200 watts is actually 216 watts in practice and this calculation is the basis for the calculation tables. Therefore, if an ergometer is going to be used for measuring max VO2, directly or calculated with tables, the load must be in accordance with the Monark principle. This extra load is not available in electronic braking cycles, but is included in the tables for calculation of max VO2. When you make a dynamic calibration you must calculate with above mentioned friction. Otherwise the values will not be correct, because the calibrator measures in the crank as an electronic braking cycle. For the Monark computerized ergometers the user can choose if the workload should be measured in the flywheel or in the crank. It all depends on the purpose of the use. USE OF PC-PROGRAMS in connection with tests makes the process easier and safer. Above all, the PC programs provide a clear picture of what is happening in the test so that the test administrator can maintain focus on the user. This means that the workload is constant, independent of pedal speed. The cycle automatically adjusts the pendulum position relative to pedal speed to guarantee the highest precision of measurement. This means that the load can be set and adjusted directly in Watts. Force is also measured. Among other things wireless networks and electric fields from cables etc. can cause problems with wireless measuring of pulse, so called telemetry.
