1 Cross Country We competed in the Buxton Cross Country Event at Buxton Junior School in October. In the sunshine, our runners ran well with many children achieving good ranking positions. Freddie Hinchcliffe came 4 th in the Year 3/4 Boys race, Ella Bagshaw came 7 th in the Year 3/4 Girls race and Elias Torkington came 4 th in the Year 5/6 Boys race. Our school came 5 th overall with 296 points Also in October, our football teams competed in the Year 5/6 football tournament at Buxton Community School. Our Boys A team played superbly. They won all but one of their group matches as their match against Fairfield Juniors B was a one-all draw. Due to their successes, they came top of their group. Their semi-final match against Buxton Juniors A was a goalless stalemate at the final whistle. Therefore, the game went to penalties where they unfortunately lost 4-3. Congratulations boys! Our Girls and Boys B teams both came 5 th in their groups. Both teams displayed good team work and spirit. However, after many missed chances, they were unable to score in any of their matches.
2 Whitehall Before half term, the year 6 s enjoyed three fun filled days of adventure at White Hall. Year 6 pupils Ella Spencer and Eva Managhan have written a brief taster of their adventures. What we did at Whitehall Leap of faith Strapped in a harness we jumped off a platform and tried to reach a pole. Canoeing We built rafts and sailed across the lake. Then we had the choice to swim. Giant Zip Wire We were strapped into a harness and then glided like a bird along the zip wire. Caving We went into a plastic cave to find clues for the answers. We also played games. Obstacle Course We carried a water bucket around the rope course trying not to spill it. Rock scrambling We went through holes in the rocks on the roaches. As we weren t clipped on we had to be careful. Orienteering Around the grounds we had to find poles with numbers on that we had on our sheet to figure out the word. This November all our Reception children, completed a Balanceability course. Over a number of weeks, the children followed a schedule of four, fifteen minute sessions of fun activities that built their confidence, spatial awareness and balance skills that will enable them to ride a bike without stabilisers. The children enjoyed improving their gliding, stopping, braking and turning skills using the balance bikes.
3 Our table tennis teams competed against other schools from the High Peak area at New Mills Secondary School. The children played well against strong teams in the first round but unfortunately didn t progress to the semi-finals as they didn t win the most games. However, the children gained greater success in the doubles games which they played afterwards. The girl s team beat Hague Bar and the boy s won all their games against Hayfield. Congratulations! Thank you to Mrs. Wren and Mr. Gissing for kindly giving their time to transport and support our teams. Congratulations to all our Year 5 children for their achievements! Level 1 Bikeability Evie Podam Many of our Year 3 and Year 5 children received Bikeability training this November. Year 3 children all achieved level 1 bikeability. Well done! They were taught how to ride their bike with control in preparation for cycling on the road. On the playground children practised: pedalling and braking with control; pedalling along, using gears and avoiding objects; and looking all around and behind whilst controlling their bike. Children in Year 5 aimed to achieve level 2 Bikeabilitity and rode on the roads around school to develop their on-road skills. On the roads, children learnt how to: recognise typical hazards; let others know what they are about to do; know where to ride on the road; and to pass parked cars and side roads. All children involved received certificates and/or badges to celebrate their achievements. Provisional Level 2 Bikeability Francesca Sproson Eva Ross-Cartledge Henry Morris Marcie Croft Ryan Beesley Maddison Stafford Chloe Montgomery-White Emmeline McMahon Level 2 Bikeability Beau Healy Eleanor Holt Jimmy Lynch Sam Mycock Lucy Frewer Hamish Thomson Joel Sanchez Abigail Gissing Ciaran Keogh Jodie-Lee Fowler-Morson Sam Quinn
4 In December, a number of KS2 children took part in the Christmas Spectacular at Buxton Leisure Centre. We selected a number of Year 3 and 4 children to take part in the Swimming Spectacular where children competed as members of Team Elf! They took part in a number of individual races and relays before getting in the festive mood with a splashy play around in the water. Two teams of Year 5 and 6 children competed in a Boccia competition as well as having a go at hurling. They even managed to squeeze in enough time for a snow ball fight. Lauren Ochalek was commended by the event s organisers for her sportsmanship and sensibleness. Children were even visited by Father Christmas and his elves! This term our Year 6 children have been working hard to improve their swimming confidence and proficiency with a range of swimming strokes. Now most children can swim up to 25metres. Congratulations! PE and Sport Premium This term we have used our annual Sports funding in the following ways: We have continued to use the Sports Funding to provide free afterschool clubs and coaching using quality coaches from Chris Hill and a specialist coach from Peak Athletics Club. KS1 children have benefited from Chris Hill Multi-skills sessions and Years 4 to 6 pupils have had Athletics coaching. Because in previous years, parents have noted that children need more time to work together as a team before competitions, we have organised sessions every Monday with Chris Hill coaches. They have run coaching sessions to coach and help select our school teams. This term we have had Year 5/6 football, table tennis and Year 3/4 football coaching sessions. As mentors, Chris Hill coaches have worked alongside various teachers in PE lessons. Three lunch times a week, we have had a Chris Hill playground leader working with children on the playground to organise and lead games with children across both key stages. New sports equipment has been bought: various bats and balls to replace lost and damaged ones; new athletics and table tennis equipment. We have continued to support HPSSP (who organise all High Peak competitions and festivals) by affiliating to the partnership. Subsidised transport costs to and from Whitehall for our Year 6 pupils. Funded Balanceability sessions for our Reception children.
