Since then, more than 100 exhibitions have toured to 90 venues in 21 countries worldwide. The Design Museum touring exhibitions range in size from square metres and cover all areas of design architecture, fashion, furniture, graphics, and product. On 24 November 2016, the Design Museum will open in its spectacular new home on High Street Kensington and will grow its portfolio of touring exhibitions which will be available for hire from Spring 2017 onwards. 5 exhibition summary Winner of 'Best Cycling Event' at the London Cycling Awards 2016, the exhibition celebrates the diversity of contemporary cycling at every level, from every day commuting to Olympic-level competition, presented through the lens of design and innovation. It looks at the people and machines that make contemporary cycling what it is, and asks how it might develop in the future. Cycling is a passion, and for many, part of their identity - be it as a stylish way to get from A to B or as a fiercely competitive sport. The exhibition demonstrates how new technologies, lifestyle aspirations, and environmental concerns have transformed the culture of cycling on a scale not witnessed since the Second World War. The explosion of interest in cycling is changing the way in which we use our towns and cities. For many people, bicycles are replacing cars as their chosen means of transportation. It is also driving a surge of craftsman bicycle makers to tailor machines to the precise specifications of their users. Cycle Revolution brings together dozens of bicycles, from some of the finest manufacturers including Pinarello, Brompton and Boardman Elite; high-end kit and accessories, personal pieces belonging to well-known cyclists including Sir Chris Hoy and Sir Paul Smith; as well as speciallycommissioned film and photography to tell the powerful, personal and sometimes remarkable stories of cycling today. The exhibition looks at cycling subcultures through four tribes the High Performers who reach Olympic speeds, the Thrill Seekers who take on all terrains, the Urban Riders who pedal our cities mile by mile, and the Cargo Bikers who work on two wheels. The quintessential models favoured by each tribe are displayed, from award winning track bikes, to heavy duty freight haulers, as well outfits and accessories giving an insight into the motivations, passions and achievements of each tribe. The tribes are also each represented by an advocate - chosen to embody their particular cycling lifestyle. Cycle Revolution looks at changes in manufacturing techniques and innovation in use of material and design. A large-scale recreation of a bicycle making workshop shows how bespoke bikes are created by craftsmen who tailor each one to the precise specifications of its user. The workshop brings to life this highly skilled process and features interviews with some of the UK s most in-demand bike builders. The exhibition s final section examines the future of cycling - how it is changing the infrastructure of the city, and how designers and urban planners are responding to the needs of twenty-first century cyclists, from concerns over safety to the development of new technologies and concept bikes. Whilst the exhibition loans and collaborators are mainly drawn from the UK, the themes are of international relevance. The exhibition presents cycling innovations from around the world. There is also an opportunity for tour venues to replace content with like-for-like exhibits for example a bicycle belonging to a prominent sportsperson in the UK to be replaced by a sportsperson from the Venue s country. This area introduces the world of cycling today with a presentation of some of the very best cycling photography from around the world. 2. CYCLE TRIBES Cycling is a passion. The vast international cycling community can be loosely understood as tribes, each representing something personal and powerful. A series of zones occupying the main part of the exhibition space, explore each of these tribes with a focus on design and innovation. Each tribe is represented by a high-profile spokesperson within the exhibition. High Performers Tribe Advocate: Sir Chris Hoy, GB s most successful Olympic athlete, winner of six gold medals. Thrill Seekers Tribe Advocate: Shanaze Reade, Professional BMX and track cyclist, three times winner of the UCI BMX World Championships. Urban Riders Venues are welcome to launch their own global public competition to determine the ultimate urban rider to be featured in the exhibition. Cargo Bikers Tribe Advocate: Lawrence Brand, Director of Porterlight Bicycles and cargo bike designer. 3. THE BIKE BUILDERS Bicycle building is a craft. The wave of creative innovation for mass market cycling has resulted in a surge of craftsmen bicycle makers working by hand to tailor machines to the precise specifications of their users. This zone presents six UK-based bike builders who are pushing the boundaries of bicycle design. CYCLE REVOLUTION 7

This zone looks at the world s top cycling cities and presents some of the solutions being developed to create the right conditions for cycling. It shows how architects, urban planners and designers across the world are responding to the needs and aspirations of the twenty-first century cyclist. 5. EXHIBITION FILM A specially commissioned film brings together high profile cyclists talking about what cycling means to them and their hopes for the future of cycling. 6. SOCIAL WALL A social wall using crowdsourced content to display continuously changing images responding to a different question posed each month. This is a space in which to showcase the global scale of cycling and the growing interest in it, whilst also giving the visitor an opportunity to connect with cyclists from all over the world.
