2 Since 2010, the number of road traffic fatalities decreased by 13.4%, more sharply than the number of injury accidents, injured people and hospitalized victims ( 12.5%, 12.3%, and 8.9% respectively). In the first 10 months, there is a sharp increase in fatalities among senior people aged 65 and over (50 additional fatalities) and a decrease in fatalities among people under 25 year old (20 fewer fatalities). Fatalities among motorcyclists rise again (+9%), representing 56 additional motorcyclist fatalities in The monthly fatalities curve presents in 2017 characteristics very close to those of 2010: fine weather allowed trips throughout the whole season. Fatalities among moped riders are further reduced ( 53% since 2010). Fatalities among pedal cyclists continue to rise (+6% compared with 2016 and +17% compared with 2013). Seasonality of motorcyclist fatalities, caused by the leisure use of the most powerful motorcycles, is extremely marked this year. It reflects the significant increase in fatalities resulting from the use of these motorcycles throughout 2017 nice weather. 4 Behavioural factors (estimates on a rolling 12 months of Presumed Responsability data, as multi-causes of fatal accidents) in France mainland : Excessive or inappropriate speed should remain the main cause of fatal accidents, in a very slight retreat in 2017 compared with Nonetheless, this trend conceals a disparity between road networks. Outside built-up areas, speed is present as a cause in more than one third of fatal accident, while it only represents 18% of fatal accidents causes on motorways. Alcohol is present in just less than 20% of fatal accidents causes in 2017, slightly rising compared with The use of illegal drugs while driving remains as present as last year. Failure to respect priority rules, as the third cause of fatal accidents, slightly decreases this year compared with However, this third factor of fatal accidents is overrepresented in urban areas in 1 in 6 fatal accidents. The factor lack of focus is generally present in fatal accidents causes in urban areas and on communal roads. Wrong-way driving represents 6% of fatal accidents causes on motorways. The factor sickness increases in 2017 compared with last year, notably in urban areas. Development of road traffic fatalities in regions of France mainland : In comparison with 2016, fatalities in 2017 appear significantly lower in 5 regions: Occitanie, Corse, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Hauts-de-France and Pays de la Loire. There would be between 20 and 30 additional fatalities in 2017 in regions Ile-de-France and Centre-Val de Loire, and more than 30 in region Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. In Centre-Val de Loire and in Bourgogne- Franche-Comté there were 73 fatalities per million inhabitants on average over five years whereas the national average is 53. In comparison with 2010, fatalities would decrease in 2017 in all regions; a decline of the order of 3% in Hauts-de-France or in Bretagne, up to 20% in Occitanie and Nouvelle-Aquitaine. However in these two regions, the number of fatalities compared to the population is well above the national average, and even stronger concerning young people (130 fatalities per million of young inhabitants). Beyond annual development, or comparison with 2010 the reference year, the most dangerous regions (far above the national average) for young people aged 18 to 24 (fatalities in relation to the region s population aged 18 to 24) are, on average over 5 years: Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, Centre-Val de Loire and Ile-de-France with more than 180 fatalities per million young inhabitants. The share of motorcyclist fatalities rises to 35% in Provence-Alpes-Côte d Azur, 33% in Corse and 31% in Ile-de-France. Road Safety in 2017 Estimated as of January 25,

5 Road safety in overseas areas: French Road Safety Observatory - ONISR 237 people are estimated to have died on roads in overseas areas in 2017, including 152 fatalities in the overseas departments (Guadeloupe, Martinique, Guyane, La Réunion, and Mayotte) and 85 fatalities in overseas communities or in Nouvelle-Calédonie. This represents a decrease of 9% compared with 2016, and a decrease of 16% compared with Annual number of road traffic fatalities in France overseas areas Target Fatalities With 44 fatalities estimated in 2017, fatalities among young people aged 18 to 24 continue to decline. 78 fatalities were recorded in This presents a 44% gain. Nonetheless, fatalities among people aged 25 to 34 fluctuate between 40 and 80 fatalities since 2010 and is estimated around 60 in Fatalities among senior people aged 65 and over remain moderate (26 fatalities) but this figure is higher than in 2010 (16 fatalities). Car users mortality represents just less than half of the fatalities in overseas areas. With 98 estimated fatalities, motorist fatalities rise to the same level as in 2010 (105 fatalities) whereas the year 2013 showed a lower level (71 fatalities). The proper use of seat belts is a major issue in overseas areas where in several territories half to three quarters of fatalities were not wearing seat belts. The number of fatalities among powered two-wheelers users is still significant with 74 fatalities in 2017, representing one third of all road fatalities in overseas areas. Since 2010, moped rider fatalities decrease whereas motorcyclist fatalities remain equivalent. Failure to wear a helmet concerns half of PTW fatalities. Pedestrian mortality remains stable in 2017 with 46 estimated fatalities, but it is higher than in 2010 (37 fatalities recorded). Speed and alcohol remain the first two causes of fatal accidents but they are overrepresented in overseas areas compared with France mainland. Failure to respect priority rules is less frequently recorded in overseas areas, except on communal roads in urban areas where it follows the trend observed in France mainland.
