4-H Pedal Power Energy Bike - Gateway for Interactive Sustainable Energy and Healthy Living 4-H Programs I. How to Schedule and Reserve Five 4-H energy bike units are placed with host counties throughout NYS. Those five counties have a contact person with whom you can work directly to reserve, schedule, and return the bike. Contact them directly via or phone to reserve an energy bike. They each have Outlook Calendars for managing the release and return of bikes. Use the following list of host counties to schedule the bikes for your program(s) and event(s): County Bike Unit County Host Contact Phone Genesee 4-H Energy Bike unit 1 Charles (Chip) Malone cwm4@cornell.edu x 130 Seneca 4-H Energy Bike unit 2 Rachel Williams rrw33@cornell.edu (315) Dutchess 4-H Energy Bike unit 3 Collin Adkins cda37@cornell.edu x113 Rensselaer 4-H Energy Bike unit 4 Kandis Freer kmf83@cornell.edu (518) ext. 106 Jefferson 4-H Energy Bike unit 5 Sabrina DeRue sld95@cornell.edu It is the responsibility of the User county or organization to arrange all transportation from the host county and return to the host county. Planning further in advance helps to find logical transport options tied in with other staff travel.
Operating the 4-H energy Bike: Safety Factors: Be sure participants have parental permission (this may not always be possible depending on the kind of event, but is suggested if a parent is present) Be watchful of clothing that could easily get caught in the bike chain or spinning wheel Never let youth operate the bike barefoot Avoid letting children to young/too small operate the bike. It is easy to slip off the pedals and crash on the bike frame Prevent Avoidable Injuries!! Pedaling too fast burns out lightbulbs and can damage bike parts. Leading a fun and Educational Experience: Be sure participants have parental permission (this may not always be possible depending on the kind of event, but is suggested if a parent is present) Be watchful of clothing that could easily get caught in the bike chain or spinning wheel Never let youth operate the bike barefoot Avoid letting children to young/too small operate the bike. It is easy to slip off the pedals and crash on the bike frame Prevent Avoidable Injuries!! Share the Healthy Choice Concepts and Energy-Smart ideas: Choose one youth participant to pedal the bike Remember those not on the bike are an important part of your audience. Focus the discussion on them as well as the rider Engage the audience in two (2) energy discussions. 1. Source of Renewable Energy use the guide from pages 2 and 3 ( Forms of Energy and Energy Transformation Flow )to discuss where almost all energy originates. Depending on time you can also discuss the forms of energy and definition of renewable and non-renewable energy. 2. Feel The Power let participants experience the feel of generating efficient and non-efficient light bulbs. They can also power the 12 volt blender by peddling. There is a round knob that allows you to select the various bulbs and blender. Each is labeled.
II. Bike Assembly and Operation Identify the four (4) major components. 1. Energy bike 2. Bike trainer stand with the.. 3. Generator assembly (number 2. and 3. stay connected as a single unit during transport) 4. Table-top display unit Pull the tightening handle on the trainer to the open position Place the bike on the stand so the axels will be evenly inserted to the trainer stand clamps Tighten the trainer clamps to the bike axel by rotating the tightening handle clock-wise. Be sure the rear bicycle wheel is touching the trainer resistance drum with moderate friction. To do this reach under the generator and pull up until the rear bike wheel rests snugly on the resistance drum. Then tighten the J bolt with the large nut. This can generally be done by hand (without a wrench). The rear wheel should line up so that it is centered over the resistance drum. There are adjustment options if this is necessary. The generator is attached to an assembly that may be lowered up or down by loosening two nuts/bolts Set up Basic set up instructions are included in the packet of information with each bike unit. A short You Tube video is available on line and should be viewed prior to use. Find instructional video at the NYS 4-H Energy website: Operation how to use the energy bike is also included in the video above. Information and energy concepts to convey to audiences are found in the written materials with the unit(s) and also on line downloadable. Pack up and Transport See the manual within the unit titled: Operation and Safety Guidelines. It includes a pictorial set of instructions of how all components fit back in the tote and preparation for transportation.
4-H Pedal Power Energy Bike Set up Instructions 1. On the bike stand, pull legs to the open position. Pull the tightening handle all the way to the unlock (open) position so that the ends of the bike axel will fit into the holders (FIG. 1) 2. Place the back tire of the bike on the bike stand so the axel will be evenly lined up with the bike stand clamps. The tire should set directly on the etched aluminum drum. (FIG. 2) 3. Pull the tightening handle to the locked position to secure the bicycle in place. (FIG 3) 4. Place the front wheel in the bike trainer stand as shown in FIG. 4 FIG 1 FIG. 3 FIG. 2 Fig 4
5. Connect the cable from the bike stand generator to the display box cable as shown below (FIG. 5). It will snap/lock into place. 6. Insert the light bulbs to the table top display unit. Be sure to firmly hold the white ceramic light bulb bases as you screw the bulbs in so they do not slip and turn as you tighten the bulbs (FIG. 6) 7. Note: A good light bulb display option is to use: (1) 75 watt incandescent; (1) 12 watt CFL; and (1) 3-5 watt LED (FIG. 7) 8. Insert the power plug from the blender into the display unit (FIG. 6) FIG. 5 FIG. 6 FIG. 7
Smaller items such as written materials, bike pump, wheel stand, fan and other items may be added after the larger items.
The Power of Healthy and Energy-Smart Choices Save Energy act local Think Global Exercise Biking is a great way to stay fit. Ride safely! Eat Healthy Making healthy smart smoothies is a great Start!!
Concept 1: What Is Energy FORMS OF ENERGY All forms of energy fall under two categories NGSS: Construct, use, and present arguments to support the claim that when the kinetic energy of an object changes, energy is transferred to or from the object. KINETIC: Kinetic energy is energy in motion RADIANT ENERGY THERMAL ENERGY SOUND MOTION ELECTRICAL ENERGY POTENTIAL: Potential energy is stored energy CHEMICAL ENERGY NUCLEAR ENERGY STORED MECHANICAL ENERGY GRAVITATIONAL ENERGY
Concept 2: Energy Transformation & Flow NGSS Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence for the role of photosynthesis in the cycling of matter and flow of energy into and out of organisms. The question is. Where did the energy to run the blender or light bulb originate??? The Law of the Conservation of Energy: Energy cannot be created or destroyed it can only change form (Einstein). Plan an investigation to determine the relationships among the energy transferred, type of matter, mass, and the change in the average kinetic energy of the particles as measured by the temperature of the sample..
