3 FROM THE PRESIDENT... By Barbara Tomita During a discussion at one of the OCW committee meetings (yes, I know that I have been branded the Committee Queen), we broached the subject of new club members. That discussion got me thinking about why people join OCW. Here are a few of the reasons I came up with: a) Ride with other people; b) Safety of riding in a group; c) Meet new friends; d) Explore new areas to ride; e) Tired of talking to oneself; f) Learn new skills; g) Find out about the latest cycling gear; h) Get tips from veteran riders. So, then I brainstormed the reasons people may stop riding with us: a) Dropped by group; b) Ignored before and after the ride; c) Publicly reprimanded by other riders; d) Not comfortable in a pack. Consequently, I came up with some ideas to encourage new members to join our rides. 1. Introduce yourself to new riders. For example, Ross Ritari does a nice job of meeting every new rider on Saturday morning. Then, Ross announces their names at the start so other riders can assist them. While I make a point of meeting new people on the ride, I keep forgetting their names. I must have asked Miguel for his name every Saturday for a month. So, if I introduce myself to you more than once, you ll understand. 2. Wait for new riders or regroup. Debi Butz has a fun Wednesday Night Ride because she periodically stops to allow riders to regroup. That way, new riders aren t left to ride alone. Jim & Irene Walker, Ken & Ollie Morrison cultivated many new riders in our club by riding with them. Cheryl McMurray graciously waits at the top of the hill until people like me can make it. Then, we can all ride down the hill together (of course, I get dropped on the downhill, too). I know this gesture makes a difference because I still remember the day I was climbing a hill in Corona (and dying) and Ralph Burton soft-pedaled until I caught up with him. 3. Assist new riders in the group. I recently overheard Charley Simons working with a group of new DutDutchch riders who were Stapleboek strong, but were new to riding in a pack. I heard one of the riders thanking Charley because they weren t sure what to do. Chuck Bramwell helps new (and old) riders by announcing cycling tips before the Saturday Century rides. Peg Bauer has not only offered cycling assistance, she has also provided nutrition and endurance tips to new riders. Getting to know a group s cycling culture is important and assistance offered by a member of the group is a nice way for new riders in the group to get acquainted. 4. Include new riders in activities. Kathy Pilcher does a commendable job with Tandem Time by personally inviting new tandem couples to meet after the ride for treats. Alan Dauger invites riders on the Friday Ride to stop for a coffee break just a few miles before the end of the ride. That gives people a chance to catch up and still join the discussion on the latest and greatest gear. There are times when you may be training and need to ride at a specific speed or do a specific course. However, there are other times when you could take time to stay with new riders. And, even if you don t ride with a new rider, you can always invite them to join you after the ride if you stop for coffee or lunch. You can also spend a few minutes before the ride introducing yourself and finding out about the new rider. ORANGE COUNTY WHEELMEN NEWS SEPTEMBER 2007 PAGE 3

4 Regardless of where you ride in the pack, I challenge each member to make an effort to meet, ride with, assist and/or include a new rider in after-ride activities. I m sure it will be worth your effort. President s Ride. On Sunday, October 7 th, I m hosting the President s Ride. The President s Ride will follow the short ride for the OCW Sunday Ride (see the Sunday Ride schedule for details on time and location). This will be a no-drop ride. After the ride, we ll enjoy free sodas at Carl s Jr. and if you re brave enough, you can stay for the OCW Board meeting. OCW Wishes You A Happy Birthday! Dan and Brian demonstrated safe bicycle handling and talked about how CABO s bicycle safety training could benefit our members. You can view some of their training techniques at On Monday August 30 th, 11 people met at the home of Michelle Kashima to go over how training 10 members may benefit our club on our regular scheduled rides and organized events such as The Bear and Amtrak. From this meeting we were able to get 4 members to sign up for training. We are now asking if any members would be interested in participating in CABO s training. The Road 1 training authorized by the Board for 10 of our members, would consist of 12 hours of instruction that could be broken up into 3 to 4 days over several weeks, in order to fit into our busy schedules. The training would include classroom instruction as well as training out on the road. Participants will also be video taped using Dan and Brian s Dual Chase technique. The participants may also have the opportunity to sign up for further instruction to become Certified. We will be asking that the 10 participants for Road 1 use their knowledge to help other members in group rides throughout the year. Also, the Road 1 trained members will have recognition of their accomplishment by wearing a patch, or some other identification on their OCW jersey. We hope that training our members on road safety will encourage others and lead to more fun while we are riding our bikes and Sharing the Road! 6 CALIFORNIA TRIPLE CROWN DOUBLE CENTURY REPORT By Frank Neal Hi! Its me...garfield (you know, the Kickstand Guy!). The California Triple Crown (CTC) Double Century Series Spring Circuit ended on June 23 with the Grand Tour Double Century. There were no Double Century Events in July. The Fall Circuit begins on August 4th at Mt. Tam. I ll report on that in October. This month I am writing about a remarkable California Triple Crown Comeback. They re-educated him about living skills. He was then released to give Life another try. After some additional months, he began to bike commute 20 miles each way to work each day. At 2007 Solvang Double Century Registration, I saw Mark. I was glad to see him and speak to him. He told me, I lost some memory, but not my cycling legs. At Grand Tour, I learned a secret that I hope Mark will not mind that I mention. I met his fiancée, Winnie Gillette. By the way, she is also a California Triple Crown Award Winner. With a Finish at 2007 Grand Tour, Mark has captured his 34 th CTC Double and his 5 th California Triple Crown Award! Mark Parish. Mark was an accomplished bike commuter and Double Century rider with 31 CTC Doubles before a devastating cycling accident. Mark before his accident. On his morning commute to work via the famed Diamond Bar/Grand Avenue Camel-backs, Mark was bombing on the downhill before dawn. He collided with a coyote. The rest of the conflict is foggy. But, the result was that Mark did a major head-plant! While he was (Thankfully!) wearing a helmet, his head and brain injuries were still severe. He spent three months at the awesome Casa Colina Rehabilitation Center in Pomona. They are Super! PAGE 6 Mark riding tandem with his mother, Donna Parish. Here is what Mark has to say, in his own words, a year after his accident: Comparing my life now to last year is totally amazing. Who would have thought that a horrific bicycle accident that caused me to have traumatic brain injury (TBI) would have resulted in the way things are today. Before the accident I was shy, very protective of myself, and my life revolved around working and ORANGE COUNTY WHEELMEN NEWS SEPTEMBER 2007

7 biking. Having gone through the coma, hospital, and clinic stays; opened my eyes to view life in a new way. One huge factor that I realized was the number of friends that supported me that I thought never existed. I have come to realize that there is no pain in dying. There is however pain in the hurt you could have caused loved ones that care about you and who would be devastated if you did not survive. The TBI resulted in having to learn how to walk, along with being able to do a lot of other basic tasks that we take for granted. When I was discharged from the clinic, three months after my accident, my balance and coordination were so bad that I could not walk down stairs, run, or cycle. However, over time and with determination my cycling and running are at a much higher level than they were prior to the accident. I am now back to cycling to work, riding my back-to-back weekend centuries, and have completed three double centuries. What a life opening experience to have gone through. - Mark Finishes for the full year Awards. 13 REARVIEW MIRRORS, GOOD IDEA? By Cheryl McMurray The rear view mirror is a cycling aid to help you stay aware of your surroundings but this is one of those subjects that can conjure up the same controversial debates as Shimano versus Campy, Republican or Democrat, and Windows or Macintosh. Let me go on record to say that I have used a rear view mirror since day one of my cycling career but have listened to the conscientious objectors and their objections and to those who have religiously used them. Here are some of the criticisms of rear view mirror use that I have heard over the years, and some are valid if the mirror is not used correctly. If you crash, you have glass (mirror) close to your eye. It takes your eyes off the road in front of you. Its presence on your glasses (or helmet) is annoying. When people use them, they begin to drift, changing their line of travel. This is not an article attempting to convince everyone into using one but to answer some of these concerns and offer some suggestions that can make mirror use safe and possible invaluable. First off as to the concern of having glass that close to your eye, as your cleat will mysteriously clip out of the pedal in a crash, I have never had a mirror stay on my glasses but always seem to have to do a search on the ground for it afterwards. The next concern is that a mirror will take your eyes off of the road in front of you if you look into it for too long which is true. I limit my mirror use to 1 second glances, then back to the road which enables me to keep an eye on traffic situations behind me, friends who may be lagging behind, or cyclists about to pass me without giving any warning. A mirror is still no substitute for a quick glance back with your head before moving across traffic (for a possible left turn) but is only an aid to keep you aware of traffic behind you so that the glance back can be quick and thus safer. I understand that the presence of mirror can be a little annoying for your forward sight but like all things, you get used to it and eventually ignore its presence. And for the last concern listed, the only time that a mirror will make you drift from your line of travel is due to a longer look than the 1-second rule I discussed earlier. If you look often, you will not have to look long thus keeping your eyes on the road in front of you In conclusion, I have found the rear view mirror helpful and invaluable when observing the presence of traffic behind me, how close they will pass by me, keeping an eye on friends who have dropped off the back of the group, crossing lanes for a left turn (adding a physical glance back), and letting friends know when a car, or group of riders is coming so we can prepare for their passing. With the proper use of a mirror, you will develop what mothers have had for years, eyes in back of their head. NEW OCW MEMBERS All OCW Members, please note... Members Present: Bob Fairfield, Alex Laugen, Dave Gibson. CALL to ORDER The meeting was called to order by President Barb Tomita at 11:00 am. MINUTES A motion was made by Dan Gorman and seconded by Sylvia Grotz to approve the minutes of the July Board Meeting. Motion carried. TREASURER S REPORT The club is solvent. Jim Walker reported that all of the figures from January to July are on the website. in San Diego. The ride will end at a different spot than normal, so we need volunteers to direct traffic. Also need volunteers to help find bags, unload bags and alphabetize the bags. Debi has the jersey design for Amtrak. All the rest stops are fully staffed, but we need one more SAG driver. Lee Stebbins stated that the second rest stop will be at Las Pulgas, same as last year. Amtrak is going well. Public Relations: The club is supporting the city of Santa Ana for urban bikeways. Mike wrote and sent a letter to Sacramento on July 12 to support expanding bike trails in Santa Ana. OCW COMMITTEE REPORTS 2008 Annual Award Dinner: Dan Gorman reported that the committee has come up with three potential venues that meet the criteria of less than $10,000 for costs. The committee will take a look at the venues this week. Dan requested that the club spend up to $8000 for the banquet. This will be covered as a new business item. The Crowne Plaza has a $10 per car parking fee, which they might be able to get them to waive. The other two possibilities are the Embassy Suites on Dyer and the Tustin Banquet Center at the 55 and 17 th. OCW PARAMOUNT CORPORATION REPORT OCW Paramount Corporation is solvent. BOARD MEMBER REPORTS President: The club had a nice Tandem Time yesterday with lots of new tandems out. The next Tandem Time will be October 6. Barb is going to try something different. She is going to sponsor a President s Ride to coincide with the board meeting. The ride will be on October 7. It will start at the board meeting location and be a short ride with a small group. Vice President: September. Still looking for a speaker for Membership: OCW has 457 members with 8 new members. Paramount has 125 members. Events: Still looking for volunteers to work at the end Membership Committee: Irene Walker reported that the committee will have a meeting in the next couple of weeks. Picnic Committee: Sylvia Grotz reported that the picnic was successful. The weather as well as the venue was good, and everyone had a good time. A hundred people sent RSVPs, and 85 to 90 attended. Safety Training: Michelle Kashima reported that they had a meeting last Monday with 11 members. They discussed recommendations for the safety committee, such as inviting new members for training, possible incentives for taking the training, having CABO do training for the club, sending an to ask if we can use cyclistview.com on our website, ask CABO if our certified instructors will be able to certify other new instructors, keeping a permanent record of available training, requiring that each trainer teach one or more sessions each year, and sending s about road PAGE 14 ORANGE COUNTY WHEELMEN NEWS SEPTEMBER 2007

OLD BUSINESS Amtrak Century Ride Budget: Lee Stebbins submitted the budget for the 2007 Amtrak. Cal Trans is aware of the ride. The request is in with Camp Pendleton. They have requested a roster of the riders. The ride may end up on the freeway. Everything is on order. He is still negotiating with San Onofre State Park. The pre-ride is the weekend before Amtrak. They are still verifying the parking facility in San Diego. They are still working on the give away, and haven t decided what yet. Charlie Irwin suggested a first aid kit for cyclists. A motion was made by Debi Butz and seconded by Irene Walker to approve the Amtrak budget. Motion carries. NEW BUSINESS Financial Practices: This will be covered at the next board meeting Banquet Costs: A motion was made by Dan Gorman and seconded by Charlie Irwin to allow the committee to spend up to $8000 for banquet at one of the three venues to be determined by the committee. Motion carries. Holiday Party: Jim Walker was concerned about getting someone to work on the Holiday Party. Debbie Myers volunteered to work on it again this year. Alan Dauger has consented to providing his home as long as the club provides the clean-up. OTHER The Folding Party will be on a Tuesday this month. September 1 is the Amtrak Pre-Ride. COMPACT CRANKS By Cheryl McMurray Have you just celebrated another birthday, or better yet, have your knees? From someone who has ridden many miles with the traditional 53/39 crank set, triple cranks, and compact cranks, I hope I can shed a little light on these small wonders and help you determine if they might be right for you. Compact cranks came on the scene a few years ago promoting the advantages of spinning and giving you greater options on those hilly rides. They come in two different configurations, a 34/50 chain ring setup or a 36/50. I have used the 34/ 50 for the last three years and these are some of my findings. First off, I will admit that I like options and a triple chain ring gives me just about every option I will ever need on any route but the downside to these cranks is the weight. The 39/53, although sufficient for most Orange County roads, leaves me having to change cassettes if I head out for rides on streets with a 10%+ grade or hilly centuries, not to mention those hilly doubles. The compact crank has offered me an option that reduces the weight of the triple yet accommodates my unexplained need for those steeper grades. I noticed right out of the driveway on my first ride ever with these cranks that I was spinning noticeably right away. With an cassette on the rear wheel you get the same gear ratio using a 50/11 as a 53/12.5(sorry for the fraction) and a 34/23 will give you same advantages as a 39/26. It s hard to ignore the extra advantage this will give you on those 10%+ grades but there is a down side as there will be larger gaps between shifts. If you are doing a mountainous ride as in the Race Across Oregon fourday camp in which you encounter 36,000 ft. of elevation gain, just pop on a 12/27 cassette and you are good to go. I will admit that there was a breaking period (not for the cranks but for me) in which I had to relearn what gear to use for what riding situation but it was very short and I found that the spinning was really feeling good. If this crank set does not sound appealing now, you might want to keep it in mind as those birthdays begin to add up. Your knees will thank you. ORANGE COUNTY WHEELMEN NEWS SEPTEMBER 2007 PAGE 15

17 RENE RODARTE CONQUERS MONT VENTOUX, FRANCE By Frank Neal Rene Rodarte at to top of the famed Mont Ventoux! Hearty Congratulations to Rene! Hi! Its me...garfield (you know, the Kickstand Guy!). On July 13, 2007, OCW Member Rene Rodarte added his name to the select few Americans who have conquered the famed one-day, three-pass, challenge of Mont Ventoux in the Alps of France! I can t say it any better than Rene, when he explains: I just got back from Provence, France, where I became the 32nd American to join the Club Des Cingles du Mont-Ventoux by climbing all three routes from Malaucene, Bedoin, and Sault in the same day. I did it on July 13th (Friday!), the 40th anniversary of Tommy Simpson s death on the mountain 200 meters from the top. His widow & riding club were there from England. I was wearing my new Triple Crown jersey. I m sending you a picture of me in front of the observation deck after finishing the 3rd ascent. No, that is not a new gang sign; its one day, three ascents, on the thirteenth! LABOR DAY RIDE SEPTEMBER 03, 2007 It s a 41-mile mostly flat ride to Balboa Island. Bring some change for the ferry to continue the ride to Balboa Peninsula and have lunch. The ride returns via PCH and Dover.
