Many of our members were affected by this terrible event, we can only hope everyone is safe. I volunteered at the Kiowa fairgrounds and was surprised how many horses came in with no ID on them. It is so important to mark your halters with name tags so your horses can be identified. With the fire danger so high in our beloved Colorado we need to be prepared for the worst. On a lighter note, congratulations to one of our members, Susie Hazelbart, who wrote a very inspiring letter in the May issue of The Whip, from the American Driving Society. Susie told of her journey to find the driving horse of her dreams. We all have this in common; we love our horses and love to drive! No doubt this year has had several new venues and everyone seems to really enjoy them. Our club wants something for everyone, and it appears this year we are on the right track for enjoyable training and fun events. Don t forget our up-coming 20 Mile House HDT on July 21. 2 P a g e 2 20 Mile House Combined Driving Trial Sunday, July 21 is the date for this year s 20 Mile House CDT. The event will again be held at Salisbury Equestrian Park in. We ll be setting up on Saturday, July 20. We can use your help! This is a great event for those of you who want to see what a Combined Driving Event is like without the pressure of a major, rated show. Volunteering at the event is a great way to see what a CDE is about without having to bring a horse along. There is much that can be learned. It is fun for beginners, experienced drivers and volunteers alike! Use the up-coming CDS event You be the Judge to hone your knowledge for the dressage portion of the event. You have already worked on the cones during our cones event. Now put these into practice and have some fun. Premium book with entry form is available on CDS Website!

3 P a g e 3 Peyton Map Rally Saturday, August 3, :00 a.m. Join us for the Peyton map rally. Each driver will have a different set of maps to follow so we saturate the neighborhood with carriages and carts. All drivers will end up in the same place to have lunch together. Bring along a passenger or navigator to read the maps and share the day with you. Bring a picnic lunch and we will all have a great afternoon together. We have an indoor arena to gather in for lunch should the weather turn bad. Don t forget the sun screen and rain gear just in case. It s Colorado! CDS Greenland Open Space Trail Drive - September 7, 2013 Greenland is part of the vast expanse of Douglas County open space you see along I-25 between Larkspur and Monument hill. It is easily accessible at exit 167 from both north bound and south bound I-25. Lots of drive-through trailer parking, a port-a-potty and a covered picnic area with really nice tables are all provided at the trailhead. From I- 25 exit 167, go west.2 mile to where road turns south. Entrance to Greenland Open Space will be straight ahead.4 mile. You will need to bring your lunch. The organizers will be there before 10:00 AM. Please plan to arrive early enough to complete your drive by 1:00 PM. Our picnic will follow. If you have any questions, give us a call. Also, a headsup as to who is planning to come is always appreciated. Your drive can be as long as 9+ miles or as short as you want it to be. Almost everywhere along the trail you will be able to move off the trail to rest your equine and/or circle around to reverse direction. Everyone from VSE to draft drivers can enjoy an interesting drive in an awesomely huge area of open space. After the first.9 mile, you will have choices. [1] You can plan to drive the entire Kipps Loop for a 8.2 mile RT drive. [2] You can plan to drive only the lower trail. That would be a RT drive of 2.0 miles to 7.0 miles depending on when you decide to reverse direction. [3] You can plan to drive only the higher trail. That would be a RT of from 2.0 to 9.4 miles. On all the trails, none of the inclines or declines are steep. There are not any scary drop-offs. Most of the trails were originally graded and spread with gravel. Over time, some erosion and re-growth of the original vegetation has occurred. As a consequence, in some areas one wheel path may be obscured and the ride can be a little rough. The trail is some what comparable to a marathon course without hazards. However, you will have no need to go fast. Visit the CDS website for details and updates

We will also provide copies in the Organizer s Packet that we are putting together. Receipts are required to keep our books in order. Items that are donated require a receipt for the value of the item and the word Donated written on the receipt for tax purposes. This can include judge s fees if the person judging normally charges for their service.
