1 news update MAY 2018 (No.4/18) OF THE M.g. six celebrate with us at the E.M.G.S. Autumn event 2018 September 10 th, 11 th & 12 th 2018 at The Metropole Hotel, Llandrindod Wells, Powys. A full programme of daily outings will be arranged, such as a motor tour through the Elan Valley; visit to historic railway lines; Hay-on-Wye; etc. and much more! 2 1928 was an important year in May, women aged over 21 were allowed to vote for the first time in the U.K. and the first flight across the Pacific, from California to Australia took place. In September, the first talkie movie, (The Jazz Singer), opened in London. Also in September, in London, Alexander Fleming noticed that mould growing on a dish had stopped bacteria growing a discovery that led to the development of penicillin. But the BIG news event of 1928 occurred in October at London s Olympia when the M.G. Six, (a.k.a. nowadays as the M.G. 18/80 Mk I), made its debut. So this year our Autumn Event will be dedicated to the 90 th anniversary of the model. * * * April 22 nd was Drive It Day and Frank and Alison Bond took their M.G. 14/40 on a run through Wiltshire organised by the East Kennet group. Here they are whizzing along in the Spring sunshine:-

3 A day later, on April 23 rd, the Vintage Register of the MG Car Club began an event at the opposite end of the country, in north Yorkshire. Most of the vintage M.G.s on the event were owned by members of the Early M.G. Society and here s a line-up of cars parked at Castle Howard :- * * * It s amazing where pictures of our cars turn up these days. The image below appeared on Twitter last month, without the owner knowing anything about it!

Society from 25 May As you may know, the data protection law will soon be changing with the General Data Protection Regulation taking effect from 25 May 2018 so we wish to make sure that you are happy to still hear and receive from us relevant updates on The Early M.G. Society. Your Committee takes your privacy seriously and to remind you we will only use information about you, including your address, for the purposes of the Society. Specifically we wish to continue to send you regular Newsletters, the bi-annual Magazine and other material which from time to time we consider may be of interest to you. We set out below a summary of the EMGS Privacy policy in compliance with the new Regulations. 5 The GDPR General Data Protection Regulations Policy 1 Information About You We will collect personal information from you as a current or prospective Full or Associate Member of the EMGS. This will be your name, (title if appropriate), home or business address as registered, address, telephone number and relevant details of your eligible Early M.G. car model. 2 The EMGS Use of This Information Your personal information will only be used: a) For the EMGS to communicate and provide to you of relevant Society services and matters. b) To process any requests you may wish to make, provided the Committee consider such a request is of relevance to the EMGS Membership. c) To provide you with EMGS services and to provide you with information relating to our services and all other services which we think you may be interested in while a Member of the EMGS. Expressly, we will not share your information with any other parties. 3 Security We will take reasonable precautions to prevent the loss, misuse or alteration of information you give us. Communications from the EMGS sent by will not be in an encrypted form and therefore may not be a fully secure means of communication. Whilst the EMGS will endeavour to keep our systems and communications protected against viruses and other harmful effects we cannot bear responsibility for all our communications to be virus free. Your details can be removed from our stored records within 28 days of a written request to the Secretary of the EMGS.

6 The second important item is the new regulations for historical vehicles which are exempt from MOT testing. These new regulations came about because from May 20 th 2018, vehicles first registered over 40 years ago will be exempt from MOT testing unless they have been substantially altered. Our vintage cars have been exempt for several years, but there is a clause in the new regulations which requires that owners of Vehicles of Historic Interest (VHI) now to make a declaration when renewing their vehicle tax. These regulations aren t yet in force, so it s hard to understand the full implications, but it could be that if the declaration is not made that a car is a VHI, the status could be lost which would mean that it must be MOTd, and possibly lose its right to free road tax. It could be that cars which have enjoyed free road tax in the past might continue in the Historic Vehicle category automatically but then again, they might not, unless a new VHI declaration is made. It looks like this

7 Please contact Keith at Keith sent a picture of his 18/80 Mk II parked at a local Bentley specialist s premises that he visits from time to time, just to see the cars they re working on. He swears that the Bentley he parked next to on this occasion was 6 feet longer than the 18/80! * * * Hazard warning. There are more and more hazards on our roads these days. All of which mean that we must be increasingly wary whilst exercising our vintage M.G.s. We all know that the achievements of Bradley Wiggins, Chris Froome and our British Olympic Cycling Team have stimulated interest in cycling to the extent that cycling has taken over from golf as the most popular weekend pastime.

8 As a consequence, our country roads are now infested at weekends with packs of cyclists often MAMILs, (Middle Aged Men In Lycra), who ride with little thought for other road users, and who can be very hazardous to pass.
