6 4 The English News Weekly Podcast Jaime Selwood 2017 Listening / Reading Listening World Bicycle Speed Record Fails For Now 10 Mistakes Help Listen / Read the news story below circle the 10 words that are mistakes! 278 World Bicycle Speed Record Fails For Now 1 Most people around the world have at one time or another ridden a bicycle. Usually it begins when we are young children and we start to walk around our backyards or neighbourhood parks. Then as we get older we migrate to bigger and more expensive two wheel varieties. A select few go on to make careers out of riding a bike whizzing around a velodrome or peddling around Iraq, Italy or Spain. But for one mother in the USA bikes have always meant just one thing speed. 2 Denise Mueller has become the fastest female on a bicycle in history when she hit mph, or km/h on a non-motorised bicycle. Mueller, who is a mother of thirteen children and aged 43 years-old set her new fastest time at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. She became the fastest women in history quite easily as no female had ever attempted to ride as slow before! 3 The speed ride is quite complicated and requires the help of a modified Range Rover which is attached to the bicycle for the first day. After which the bike was detached from the cable when the speed dial hit 100 mph. For the next four miles Mueller cycled sedately as she attempted to remain within the slipstream behind the car. Her average speed is calculated by measuring the average over the four miles cycled 4 The attempt by Mueller to break the speed record for a non-motorised paced bicycle ultimately failed as her top speed was just over 7 mph slower than the record time set in 1985 by American three-time Olympian John Howard. Mr Howard managed to reach an average speed of 152.5mph ( km/h). But after three days of trying and failing to break the record Denise Mueller said I m very frustrated and very tired, but everything has gone perfectly. I have no joy or regrets. 5 The third and final day of the record attempt had to be abandoned due to rain which made the Salt Flats safe. However, Mueller has not given up on breaking the 32 year old cycling speed record. Her 16 year-old son summed up his mother s feelings as, bittersweet, but she has more to give and will be back next day! Wrong Word 10 Mistakes 1: To 6: To 2: To 7: To 3: To 8: To 4: To 9: To 5: To 10: To END OF PART 3 [371 Words]
