11 OFFICE OF THE MAYOR MAYOR GREG STANTON July 2, 2013 Fellow Community and Business Leaders, Last fall I announced my goal of implementing a bike share program, and I m excited to announce that the Phoenix City Council recently awarded a contract to a bike share company. By the end of this year Phoenix will join more than 300 cities around the world whose residents and visitors enjoy a bicycle sharing program. Bike share provides a fun, quick, and affordable way to commute and explore. It is an important step forward as we continue to look for better and more sustainable transportation options, and as we work together to make Phoenix a more pedestrian and bicycle-friendly city. The first phase of implementation calls for 500 bicycles and 50 stations throughout the Phoenix core, then adding more bicycles and stations with the goal of expanding service to Tempe, Mesa, and Scottsdale, making it a regional endeavor. Bike share is a worthy investment in our community and transportation network, but it requires that we work together in a private-public partnership to make it successful. I encourage you to support this program and consider involvement as a title, presenting, supporting, or station sponsor. Bike share memberships are also a great employee benefit as they encourage health and well-being. If our region is going to compete in the global economy, we must make our cities more livable and connected to attract high-wage employers and bright, young and educated workers.
