A Guide to Your Travel Options Campuses and Buildings
Introduction and Background Contents 03 Introduction and Background 04 Travel by ublic Transport Introduction and Background 06 Travelling to the University on Foot 08 Travelling to the University by Bike 10 Travel By Car 12 Contact Us With our arkgate Road Campus, Riverside Campus, Kingsway Buildings and the Queen s ark Campus being so centrally located within, they benefit from excellent accessibility by active travel modes; many of which you might already be aware of. Have you ever considered, however, that there might be a quicker, cheaper or more convenient way to travel to the University? This guide has been prepared to give an overview of the travel opportunities available and the measures the University has in place to assist you - take a look and if you have any further questions, feel free to get in touch with the University s Sustainability Unit, by ing greenchester@chester.ac.uk 02 03
Travelling by ublic Transport Travel by bus or train can offer a suitable alternative to the car for many; particularly where parking is limited or costly and public transport services are convenient and cost-effective. Our central locations mean there are lots of public transport services accessible within just a short walk. Why Not Hop on a Bus? Getting the Best Deal on Your Ticket You can get some great deals if you study or work at the University. Staff - can benefit from significant cost savings on their journey by public transport by purchasing an annual ticket rather than paying daily or weekly fares. It takes just 5 minutes to get from the arkgate Road Campus to city centre by bus - services 1/1a (to / from Blacon every 10 minutes), 15/15a (to / from Saughall every 30 minutes) and X22 (to / from Heswall every hour) run along arkgate Road itself, whilst services 1, 2 (to / from Liverpool every 10 minutes) and X2 (every 30 minutes to Ellesmere ort) stop on Liverpool Road. The Kingsway Buildings are served by bus number 53 at a frequency of every 15 minutes throughout the week. The service takes just 15 minutes to get to Bus Exchange from where frequent onward services are available to a wide range of local and regional destinations. Travel by ublic Transport From the Riverside Campus, Bus Exchange is only ten minutes walk away. A number of buses pass the site via Grovesnor Road, including to / from Mold, Wrexham, Hollywell and Wepre. From the Queen s ark Campus it is less than 20 minutes walk to Bus Exchange Timetable information for all services can be found at: Catch a Train All 4 sites are within approximately minutes walk of railway station. From here there are regular services to a range of local destinations, including Helsby, Frodsham, Runcorn, Warrington, Bache, Liverpool and Manchester, as well as regional and national services. Students - can take advantage of a number of offers including the Arriva North West Student Saver - an unlimited journey bus pass (including evenings and weekends), which offers a 30% reduction as compared with normal bus fares. Tickets can be purchased on-line at: Alternatively, why not pick up a GEM ass and receive discounted travel across the Merseyrail network and parts of the Northern City Line. Ticket prices and details on how to make a purchase can be found here: season-tickets/gem-pass-(studentpass).aspx 04 05
Travelling by ublic Transport Travelling to the University on Foot If you are lucky enough to live close enough to walk to University, what better way to save money, do your bit for the environment and get fitter too? lan your journey on foot To plan your journey to the University on foot visit and click on directions and then the pedestrian icon Did your know? That half of all journeys in the UK could be walked, as they are less than 2 miles. You could save around 140 per year by swapping a 2-mile car journey to the University for the same trip on foot
Travelling by ublic Transport Travelling to the University by Bike Whilst cycling is not for everyone, it is a really good way to get fit, avoid the traffic and often gets you around just as quickly as if travelling by bus or car (especially during peak times). A map of local routes within the wider area can be found here: travel-smart/cycle/ The University has a range of measures in place to help those wishing to cycle to the University. greenchester@chester.ac.uk to find out more or get involved. As a member of STAFF you can take up an interest free loan to buy a bike (up to the value of 500), making cycle purchase more affordable. Did you know we also pay cycle mileage for business travel? Or why not join the University s Bicycle User Group (BUG) or the Student Cycle Society and get to know fellow cyclists and have your say on cycling issues? U fix it bike stations are now available at the following locations: arkgate Road Campus (outsidethe Grosvenor Bike Store); Riverside Campus (by the bike shelter at the West Entrance); Kingway Buildings (by the bike shelter at CKW060); Queen s ark Campus (Under the bike Shelter); These include bike tools, a pump and stand that students and staff can use for FREE. At our arkgate Road Campus Shower / changing facilities are available in the fitness suite, at the Sports Hall, at Chritchley 019 cycle change and behind the bike store at Grosvenor House. Grosvernor Bike Store provides secure, two-tier parking and coin operated lockers. lease lock your bike inside the store. You will need your University pass to access the store. At our Kingsway Buildings Shower / changing facilities are available at 078 and 079. Our Riverside Campus Shower / changing facilities available in the rooms opposite 213 (male) and 314 (female)
Travelling by Car Sometimes the only option is to travel by car We appreciate that for many people coming by car is the only viable option. Our travel plan strategy is not an anti-car campaign but there are lots of ways to travel by car in a more sustainable way. For visitors travelling by car to our city centre campuses, please use the following postcodes: arking There is restricted parking for students at the arkgate Road Campus, Rigg Building, Kingsway Buildings and Queen s ark Campus at Handbridge - there is no student provision at the Riverside campus or at any other sites. As a STUDENT you can only apply for a permit if your round trip to University is more than 10 miles (unless you are registered disabled). ermit applications should be made through Shareoint All University STAFF are eligible to apply for a parking permit - applications should be made via the ortal. Further information on eligibility criteria can also be found here. Consider Car Sharing Sharing your journey with a colleague or friend is a great way to save money and also has wider benefits in terms of reducing congestion and parking demand. You don t have to share every day, and you can share as either a driver or passenger. The more people you share with, the more you can save - typically someone that car shares for their commute saves around 780 per year. Register your details or search for a journey match for FREE at Eco Driving Sometimes there is no alternative to a car trip - but there are ways to reduce the amount of money you spend on driving. Smarter driving could save you up to 220 per year in fuel costs. So clean out your boot, accelerate more gently and drive more steadily to help you save cash and do your bit for our environment. City Car Club City Car Club s innovative hourly car rental service gives you 24/7/365 access to pay-as-you-drive cars across. Simply reserve a car, head to its on-street location, unlock and off you go! Students quote UOC270 when applying online to get 30 free drive time. Staff - quote UO001 to get free membership in the first year.
