3 Go-Ride Velodrome Coaching Clusters Overview The Sunday cluster time slots have been reserved for the use of Go-Ride Clubmark clubs. Clubs have been grouped into clusters and allocated sessions on a rotational basis to: Give each club an equal opportunity for youth riders to access Derby track time Provide an opportunity for Clubmark clubs to pool coaches and share expertise Give British Cycling s Talent and Go-Ride Coaches the opportunity to support club volunteer coaches, providing coach and rider development opportunities. 4 Booking Procedure Quarterly Basis All available sessions dates are allocated by Derby arena on a quarterly basis and sent to British Cycling staff British Cycling will allocate the dates to the clusters and list them on the event management system for each cluster lead to administer. Each cluster lead will then need to submit a booking form to Derby Arena to confirm the booking. This should be completed as soon as cluster leads have their respective dates. Participating clubs are to submit a list of nominated riders to the cluster lead. New riders can be added to the list who will then enter into the appropriate ability group. Derby Arena reserves the right to reallocate cluster slots should a major event clash with these sessions. However, in the event of a cancellation, sessions will always be reallocated ensuring a consistent and equitable allocation of track time to the clusters. Ongoing Operations Online entry for each session will close 14 days prior to each session. Each session must be paid for direct to Derby Arena no later than 7 days prior to the session date. Each club will recruit a Level 2 Track coach to help run the cluster sessions it is then the lead organisers responsibility to ensure the correct number of Level 2 Track coaches are available to attend each cluster coaching session. If a cluster is unable to use its session or has not filled the allocation of riders the cluster lead must notify the Regional Development Manager who will support you in swapping dates or recruiting additional riders from other clubs in the cluster. All club leads will have the other cluster club contact details to allow then to contact other clubs direct, allowing them to fill their sessions. Riders must be first claim members to participating clubs. 4

5 Go-Ride Velodrome Coaching Clusters Pre-Requisites Participating clubs must hold Go-Ride Clubmark status when joining the track cluster. All cluster clubs should have at least one qualified track coach Prices & Costs Track hire for each 3 hour cluster slot will total including bike and shoe hire. If needed, Velodrome coaches hourly rate is Minimum price per participant is set at online administration fee. Equipment It is each individual club or rider s responsibility to book their bikes, riders needing a bike must the cluster lead after entering online and no later than the online entry closing date. No alterations are to be made to Derby Arena bikes other than adjustment of saddle height. Failure to comply may result in the Derby Arena restricting access of your cluster to the Go-Ride Cluster time slot. All bike bookings will be ed by the cluster lead to Derby Arena admin team on the Friday before their cluster. Derby Arena Coaching Procedures All riders need to be aged Beginner groups are limited to 15 riders. Intermediate and advanced groups limited to 20 riders Mock races are limited to 25 participants. All hire bikes are to be returned to the stands on the ramp. British Cycling Track Coaching Guidelines (p60) limit 30 riders per group on the track. Please note that Coach:Rider ratio must not exceed 1 coach per 20 riders. 5

Each group will take turns on the track. While one group is being coached on the track other groups are being briefed / debriefed by supporting coaches in the track centre. Riders should be encouraged to work towards Derby Arena Track Accreditation. Accredited riders aged 15 or older are able to take part in the Derby arena sessions. Prices and times of the Derby Arena public sessions vary, please see: Novice Group Intermediate Group Advanced Group To be able to progress out of this group riders should be able to: Start and stop safely around the run off area of the Track Must look before moving around the track Do a standing start Be able to do changes anywhere on the track Ride a full lap around the top of the track. To be able to progress out of this group riders should be able to perform: Change in pairs on and above the datum and stayers lines Stacking exercise in groups of 4 or more Through and Off on the stayers line Controlled 12 Lap mock scratch race. Riders participating in the Advanced group should be: Physically and technically able to participate in and learn advanced techniques. * This group is open to both able riders yet to achieve accreditation and U15 accredited riders 6

7 Go-Ride Velodrome Coaching Clusters The checklists on the next two pages align with the criteria used by Derby Arena for accrediting riders. All cluster sessions should be helping riders become competent and confident at performing these activities. Derby Arena Accreditation Criteria The criteria listed below describes the assessment criteria that young people need to demonstrate in order to gain accreditation and access to open Derby Arena training sessions and open regional racing at the Derby Arena. Start and stop safely around the runoff area of the track. Entering and leaving the track safely. Riding in a line on the Datum line, changing every half lap. Riding in a line on the stayers line, changing every half lap. Changing in pairs every lap then every half lap on the stayers line. Perform through and off on the stayers line. Perform lumps and bumps activity to a defined pattern. Perform stacking exercise in a group of 4 or more. Taking half laps, from a steady paced line on the stayers line. Perform a controlled 12 lap mock scratch race with steadily increasing pace line until 4 laps to go when group is free to race. Riders will also be assessed on the following and demonstrate an ability to: look before moving and demonstrate awareness of others ride in a relaxed and comfortable manner follow closely the wheel in front with no under lapping confidently use the whole track listen and respond to coaches instructions safely maintain speed appropriate to their age category. 7

10 Post-Accreditation Pathway Regional Racing and Open Sessions Visit for more information about pricing and timings of open sessions and regional racing. Open training sessions are also delivered at other regional outdoor velodromes during the summer. Track Mentors Clusters may invite accredited and suitable riders back to cluster session to be ontrack mentors for non-accredited riders. Mentors roles will include pace-setting, continuous monitoring of group, encouraging riders and reporting back to the cluster coaches on any identified issues. Mentor s should be reminded about the responsibility they have as role models for unaccredited riders so should adhere to all the track rules all of the time. Mentors are allowed to log their hours on track as volunteering hours with Clubs and Volunteers. 10
