The M1-8 series of sigs are sall i size ad are a cost effective way to ark bicycle routes. There are pros ad cos to the use of route ubers or route aes. If a route already has a colloquial ae, use the colloquial ae ad ot a arbitrary uber to avoid cofusio. Route aes are ecouraged because they ca ofte provide additioal cotextual iforatio such as destiatio iforatio i.e. Sith Street Bike Route will likely follow Sith Street ad Sith Street passes by X, Y ad Z locatios. Route ubers do ot provide this cotext ad require a bicyclist to look at a ap to uderstad where the route goes. I areas where siged bike routes are dese, the use of ubers ca be cofusig because a bicyclist ay have to ride o several ubered routes to get to a destiatio. 22 Best Practices The cities of Chicago ad Seattle provide exaples of best practices for bicycle wayfidig. Below are descriptios of their wayfidig systes. Chicago Decisio sigs precedig a itersectig siged bike route i Chicago. The City of Chicago has ipleeted a extesive directioal sig syste for bicycles usig destiatio-based sigage for the o-street bicycle etwork. The MUTCD D11-1c ad D1-1c series sigs were developed by the City of Chicago i a effort to cosolidate the aout of sigage required by the 2003 MUTCD for bicycle wayfidig usig the D11-1, D1-1 ad suppleetal sigs. The D11-1c provides specific destiatio iforatio, such as To vasto i lieu of the geeral BIK ROUT text of the D11-1 sig. This is helpful i distiguishig differet routes i a dese bicycle route etwork. The D11-1c is used by the City of Chicago as a cofiratio sig to cofir a route selectio. The sig is to be place o the far side of a itersectio after a route choice had bee ade. The D1-1c cosolidates directio, destiatio ad distace iforatio oto oe sall sig. Several D1-1c sigs ca be istalled together at the approach to a decisio poit to provide iforatio o ultiple routes. The D11-1c ad the D1-1c were developed by the City ofchicago ad later icorporated ito the 2009 editio of the MUTCD. Seattle The city of Seattle also has a directioal sig syste for bicycles. Modeled after the Chicago syste, the Seattle syste also uses the D11-1c ad D1-1c series of sigs. Because Seattle has a extesive off street path syste, additioal sigs were required to distiguish aed routes. The M1-8 series of sigs are used i Seattle to ark aed routes. These sigs are istalled alog aed routes with suppleetary sigs fro the M2, M3, M4, M5 ad M6 series. M1 sigs are also istalled at decisio poits o paths with D1-1c or D11-1csigs (see figure). May of Seattle s paths are aed. I order to iclude the colloquial route ae o the M1-8a sig, adjustets were ade to the sig. The route uber was replaced with route ae withi the ai body of the sig. The space at the top of the sig was used for a logo. This coplete sig syste helps bicyclists get to destiatios throughout the city ad provides guidace to ad alog aed bicycle routes. dod Applicatio The dod Bicycle Network ay cosist of two geeral categories of siged routes: Naed Routes: ūū Paths such as the proposed Arcadia Lake Trail ūū Recreatioal loops such as the loop aroud the Mitch Park, or a a loop that cobies path segets with o-street segets Shortgrass Rd ad developed paths i the viciity. U-aed Network Routes: ūū Routes betwee destiatios such as trasit, schools, busiess districts, ajor eployet ceters, or ajor path access poits. The two route types will work i uiso to provide bicyclists with a avigable syste alog desigated bicycle routes. Appedix C 87
