3 The Haldon Heroic routes traverse some of the most beautiful countryside in Teignbridge. Whilst enjoying this ride, please ensure that you are mindful of others who live work and play in this area. Please follow this code of conduct, take part responsibly, be ambassadors for the sport, don t jeopardise future events by behaving badly. H HELMETS: Approved Cycle Helmets must be worn. No Cycle Helmet = No Ride! I G H M O R A L S IDENTITY: You must be registered to take part. Your 'Bike Number' must be clearly displayed on the front of your bike. This number links to your emergency contact details in our database and is an important part of safety. GROUPS: Never cycle more than two abreast on public roads. Single out on narrow roads and ensure you afford motorists opportunities to pass when safe to do so. HORSES: If you see people out riding horses, please take extra care. Talk (not shout!) so that rider & horse are aware of your presence and not startled. Make eye contact, pass by calmly & quietly when safe to do so. MARSHALS: Route Marshals and Timing Marshals are there to improve safety and help keep you on route. They are NOT there to afford you priority on public roads. It is your responsibility to comply with any Stop or Give Way signs and to ensure it is safe before you proceed. OPEN to OTHERS: Roads, Bridleways, Forest Trails and Commons all remain open to the public throughout this event, including the timed Forest Stages. Please take care and allow others to go about their normal everyday life. RESPECT: You are responsible for your own behaviour. Do not allow yourself to be agitated by the actions or inactions of others. It is not your job to 'police' other road users! Show respect for other road users. Share the road, giving motorists opportunity to pass safely. Do not 'swarm' around vehicles that are being held up by oncoming traffic or slower riders. ANIMALS: There may be farm animals on country lanes, or dogs being exercised on forestry land and commons. Take extra care around animals and be prepared to stop if necessary. LITTER: Take extra care with Energy Gel Wrappers and other packaging from food items you consume whilst riding. Make sure you put them securely in your pockets until you can get to a bin. SIGNS & SIGNALS: You must comply with Traffic Laws and the Highway Code. Make sure you obey all Traffic Signs, Lights, and Road Markings. Where junctions are marshalled you must still comply with any Give Way or Stop signs. START PROCEDURE: Times: CX Mega: 08:15 hrs (Mass Start) CX Medio: 08:30 hrs (Mass Start) CX Micro: 11:00 hrs to 12:00 hrs (Flexible Start Time) The CX Mega & CX Medio will each start with a 2 mile competitive stage within the centre of Exeter Racecourse. This stage will NOT be timed. It is one mass start for each route option and there will be a prize for first male and first female for each group. If you do not make it to the start-line in time for your race, you will forfeit your chance of winning stage 1. You will receive a short 'Rider Safety Briefing' by an event official before you start. All CX Mega & CX Medio riders MUST start by 09:00 hrs. The course signage will start to be dismantled by the Broom Wagon from 09:00 hrs. CX Micro riders will be able to start from 11:00 hrs to 12:00 hrs. You will receive a safety briefing before you start. FOREST STAGES: The Haldon Heroic is an Enduro style event with each route having three or more competitive timed stages. All of these stages are off-road on land owned and managed by the Forestry Commission. STAGE ROUTES MILES FROM START STAGE DISTANCE ELEVATION 1 CX Mega & CX Medio 0 2 miles 85 ft 2 CX Mega & CX Medio miles 120 ft 3 CX Mega & CX Medio miles 350 ft 4 CX Mega / CX Micro miles 175 ft 5 CX Mega / CX Micro miles 100 ft 6 CX Mega / CX Micro miles 200 ft There is a single gateway used for entry and exit on each of the Forest Stages. These gates are marshalled. 2
4 The Stage Marshals will record your rider number on a Hand Held Timing Device as you start and finish each stage. Each stage is a single lap of a marked course. Distance and elevation as detailed above. There is a prize for the fastest male and female for every stage. Each stage is 'stand alone'. The completion of any of the Forest Stages is optional. If you are feeling tired and wish to miss out a stage, simply inform the marshal on the stage gate. If for any reason you are unable to complete a stage, make sure you return to the Start Gate and inform the marshal so that they are aware you are clear of that location. For safety, each stage has a cut-off time. If you do not reach the stage before this time you will not be allowed to start. This is to ensure that all participants can make it back to Exeter Racecourse by 17:00 hrs. Stage Location Name Opens Closes 1 Exeter Racecourse 08:15 hrs 09:00 hrs 2 Ashcombe Cross 08:45 hrs 11:00 hrs 3 Harcombe Woods 10:00 hrs 14:00 hrs 4 Long Plantation 10:30 hrs 15:00 hrs 6 Kenton Hill Covert 10:30 hrs 15:30 hrs 6 ZigZag Wood 10:30 hrs 16:00 hrs SAFETY PROCEDURES: ACCIDENTS: If you witness any incident where a fellow participant or member of the public appear to need assistance, we would urge you to stop and offer to help. If it is clear a casualty requires hospital treatment please call 999 first. Call our Event Support Number which you will find on the rear of your Bike Number. We have Paramedics out on the course. We will direct them to you as quickly as possible. On stages, ensue someone goes to the Start Gate marshal and informs them. Location: The Emergency Services and our Support Teams will need to know the location where assistance is required. You or another participant are likely to have a bike computer recording the distance travelled on the course. If you provide us this information we will be able to establish your precise location. If you have a GPS or Smart Phone, these can also help identify your location. FIRE: DO NOT smoke on any Forestry land. If you see a fire, exit the stage immediately. Call 999 to report the fire first. Then call Event Support. RIDER SAFETY: The Haldon Heroic is a tough and challenging event. Such activities will always have an element of risk, however, if you follow the advice we provide, those risks will be minimised. You must wear an approved cycle helmet on the course at all times. This is NOT a closed circuit event. You will be cycling in areas that are open to the public including public highways, bridleways, common land, and forestry land. Keep vigilant at all times. Always cycle at a speed where you are able to stop safely if required. Know your limits, especially on steep descents. Do not be drawn into danger by following others. Always heed the advice of course marshals (stop if they signal you to do so) Do not ride more than two abreast and single-out on narrow roads Always comply with Traffic Law & the Highway Code Take note of the Highways Agency Signs as well as Events Signs. They are there to warn road users (YOU) of potential hazards. Pay attention to Event Warning Signs. They are for your SAFETY. Be aware there may be dogs off of leads in open public spaces. Take extra care if you see horses - speak (not shout) so that horse & rider know you are there. Take particular care when passing through built up areas. It remains your responsibility to ensure it is safe to continue when negotiating any junction (whether marshalled or not). Give Way when necessary and take extra care when merging onto main roads. The off-road sections of the routes require differing skill levels to negotiate. Some of the tracks are steep and others have areas of deep mud and water. It is your responsibility to assess if it is safe for you to cycle these sections. If in doubt, get off and walk / run with your bike. 3
5 MECHANICAL SUPPORT: Mechanical assistance is available for emergencies only. You should aim to be self sufficient. Please ensure you carry your own spare inner tubes and a basic repair kit. If you require Mechanical Support - Please use the contact number on the rear of your Bike Number. FEED ZONES & DRINK STATIONS: Feed Zone: There is a Feed Zone at Chudleigh Knighton Village Hall. You will pass this location at the 25.5 mile point on the CX Mega & CX Medio routes. Drink Station 1: There is a Drink Station at Harcombe (Stage 3 Start / Finish Gate). Each route finishes at Exeter Racecourse where all finishers will receive their Haldon Heroic commemorative mug. Prizes for each of the six timed stages will be awarded to the fastest male and female competitor. We will not be able to award these prizes until all participants have had the opportunity to complete the stage.
