12 flagship project two-tier bicycle parking at railway stations ProRail is responsible for the Netherlands railway network, including construction, maintenance, management and safety. ProRail also provides large-scale, high-quality parking facilities for bicycles at stations across the country. At major stations, space is limited and demand for bicycle parking is high. This means that multi-tier bike racks are the best solution. Increasing numbers of train passengers use bikes to get to or from the station, so the demand for good bicycle parking is growing. Currently there is capacity for around 370,000 bicycles at stations across the country but ProRail predicts that around 600,000 bicycle places will be needed within the next ten years. The existing parking facilities are overcrowded and bikes chained to nearby fences and lampposts are already causing a nuisance. Given the expected growth in the number of rail passengers, ProRail decided to invite bids for the construction of 100,000 extra parking spaces for bicycles at Dutch railway stations.
