1 July 2017 TIDEWATER PLANTATION Community Association President s Message Cathy Weis, BOD President Summer certainly has arrived as is evidenced by our temperatures closing in on 90 degrees and the increased traffic. The tourists have arrived! We are so lucky here in Tidewater though because we are like a little hidden gem that is so beautiful and secluded, yet just minutes from the beach and shopping. We are truly blessed. Your Board and the Government Committee continue to reach out to city and county officials in an effort to accelerate the timing of improvements to Little River Neck Road (LRNR). In June, we will have had two more important meetings regarding safety. On Thursday, June 8th, Chairman Mark Lazarus and Councilman Harold Worley, both of Horry County, and Mayor Marilyn Hatley of North Myrtle Beach accompanied by Councilmen Bob Cavanaugh and Fred Coyne will have joined us for a meeting to discuss the conditions and needed improvement of LRNR. Once again several of our neighbors who live along LRNR joined us led by the pastors of the three churches, and members of Little Blessings Day School, the RV park north of Tidewater and Charleston Landing. We will keep you advised as to any progress that occurs regarding accelerating plans to improve the road. Another meeting with NMB officials will be held on Thursday, June 29th with the Director of NMB Communications, Pat Dowling, who is expected to be accompanied by the Fire Chief, Garry Spain, the Fire Training Captain, Billy Floyd, and Police Lieutenant Michael Swarthout. This meeting is to discuss Tidewater s Emergency Plan in the case of a hurricane in conjunction with the What s Inside President s Message.... Page 1 Board Notes... Page 1 Condo Corner... Page 16 Designed and published by Community Directories & Newsletters (800) emergency plans of NMB. The meeting is open to all Tidewater residents and our neighbors along LRNR. And speaking of our neighbors on the neck, The Little Blessings Day School held their 4K graduation in the Tidewater Amenity Center on Friday, June 2nd, hosted by our Government Committee. Eighteen little four 4-olds marched down the aisle clad in their caps and gowns and wearing colorful (too large for their faces) sun glasses. They performed several songs for their audience made up of parents and grandparents and each child received a couple of awards plus their diploma. It was a sight to see! We were happy to provide the venue for this adorable event. With the start of the heavy beach season we sent out an reminder about the Beach Cabana rules. If you didn t see this, you can go to the website, tidewaterplantation.org, sign in and click on the menu item Rules/Policies. A couple of other reminders always worth mentioning are regarding pets and speeding. The pet rule in Tidewater is that all pets (yes, cats too) must be on a leash at all times when on any common area on the Plantation. Your Board can only enforce the rules, however, if there is proof of an infraction. Therefore, if you notice a violation we must either have multiple witnesses or a picture. Otherwise, this becomes a he said, she said situation. The second reminder is about speeding. Please obey the speed limit and the traffic signs. Finally, since we have moved the shredding bin to the main room of the Cassels building, many more Tidewater residents have taken advantage of using this for all documents that require shredding. Be aware this is a service that is available to all Tidewater residents. I hope you enjoy your summer! FirstService Residential Message Susan Strickland, CMCA, AMS, PCAM Thunderstorm Safety Avoiding a Lightning Strike Warm weather usually means fun in the sun, but summer heat also can bring severe weather. Threatening thunderstorms often loom large on summer afternoons so it s important to be prepared for downpours and accompanying lightning, which can strike outdoors or indoors. Consider the following suggestions when planning both outdoor and indoor events this summer to reduce the risk of a lightning strike: Watch the weather. Pay attention to your local weather forecast before participating in outdoor activities. If there s a chance of thunderstorms, consider rescheduling or moving events indoors. If that s not possible, have an emergency plan in place in case a severe storm rolls in and designate a sufficient nearby structure as an emergency shelter. Stay inside. If severe thunderstorms are imminent, go indoors and wait until they pass. Safe, enclosed shelters include homes, schools, offices, shopping malls and vehicles with hard tops and closed windows. Open structures and spaces do not provide adequate protection. Duck and crouch. If you re caught outside during a severe storm, it s important to crouch low on the ground, tuck your head and cover your ears to help protect yourself from harm. Do not lie down; lightning strikes can produce extremely strong electrical currents that run along the top of the ground, and laying horizontally increases electrocution risk. Turn off faucets. During a thunderstorm, lightning can sometimes be conducted through the plumbing. Avoid any type of contact with running water, including bathing, showering, and washing your hands, dishes, or clothes. Turn off electronics. All electrical appliances televisions, computers, laptops, gaming systems, stoves, and more that are plugged into an electrical outlet could carry a current from a lightning strike. Surge protectors will reduce the risk of damaging electronics. Stay away from windows. Not only is lightning a threat, but high winds and hail create flying debris that could be harmful during a thunderstorm. Close all windows and doors and keep away from them. If you do have a large item, the City will pick these items up, but a pickup must be scheduled with them. If you would like to discard any item like this, please contact the City and schedule something so these items are not out for days at a time. Natural Resources Committee Ann Lippincott, Chairperson Update on the Yard Waste Roll Cart Pilot Program Recently, Property Management sent out an inquiry to determine how many additional residents might be interested in a yard waste roll cart should the City of North Myrtle Beach make the decision to expand the pilot program as a permanent service. Some key points regarding the pilot program and yard waste disposal are as follows: The Tidewater pilot program was offered by the City of North Myrtle Beach due to the continuing damage to Tidewater common right-of-ways (ROWs) by the City claw truck. Although the City does offer to bring in soil to fill the resultant holes and depressions, that loose soil creates another ongoing problem in that it washes into the streets and storm drains, resulting in both aesthetic and infrastructure problems. 5 While pilot program participation was limited to 100 residents, the percentage of usage was relatively low, more so on the Plantation side as opposed to the Bluffs. One of the identified problems was that the carts should have been restricted to fulltime residents in order to accurately assess regular usage. Residents have expressed frustration that they are being asked to store an additional cart and sort waste among three trash receptacles (household, recyclables and yard waste) only to witness the City dumping both household and yard waste into the same truck on pick-up day. The Director of Public Works has stated that the City does not mix waste types and has been notified of this practice by the pick-up crews via video recordings. The roll carts were never intended to totally eliminate the pick-up of loose debris, especially during major seasonal (i.e., Fall leaf) clean-up. The carts have, however, had a favorable effect on the protection of the ROWs for the disposal of routine trimming, pruning, and weeding debris over the period of the pilot program. Some residents not participating in the pilot program have elected to protect the ROWs at the front of their lots by utilizing paper bags for smaller, loose debris. Any reduction in the use of the claw truck and lessening of damage to the ROWs is helpful in eliminating unsightly holes and having replacement soil washing into the streets and storm drains. The County and City are currently enacting a ban on the use of plastic bags for yard waste. The City has stated that loose debris pick-up will continue due to the many different types of properties (single family, condominiums, timeshares, rentals, etc.) within the City. It would not be feasible to implement a city-wide roll cart program. Owners are reminded that there is a City ordinance, as well as a Tidewater rule, that prohibit the placing of yard debris on undeveloped and/or common properties. Although the practice of placing debris on undeveloped lots will eventually end once those lots are built out, owners are reminded that these undeveloped lot ROWs are also common TPCA property. Placing individual yard debris on shared common areas creates an unnecessary financial burden on the entire association of owners in that these common areas must repeatedly be repaired and replanted by the TPCA. That is why the NRC continues to work toward a more workable system for yard waste pick-up for the benefit of all Tidewater owners. Landscaping Issues: Owners having a specific issue with the landscaping management of a common area should contact the Property Management staff who coordinate the daily operations of TPCA contracted services. Susan Strickland and her team are very responsive to owner inquiries and concerns and can make the necessary contacts for the efficient resolution of any issue. Please do not deal directly with the Phoenix crews on any questions or issues. The NRC, which has general oversight of the landscaping contract and services, will follow-up in the monthly review of landscaping services with Phoenix management to make sure that identified issues have been addressed. Owner input is important in the management and evaluation of landscaping services. Therefore, we ask that you convey any specific landscaping issues to Property Management to provide for effective review and evaluation of the contracted landscaping service. Your assistance in this effort is appreciated. John Mouco, Tournament Director This year we are excited about the New Golf Ball Drop Contest dispersed by our own NMB Fire Dept. Artisan of the Month: Ardie Praetorius Ardie Praetorius is this month s featured Artisan of the Month. Ardie has resided in Tidewater Plantation for the past 20 years with her husband Larry. They were involved in building custom homes in Tidewater for 12 years. They have three children and five grandchildren. Ardie began her pottery studies in 1973 at UNC Greensboro. She also studied at Penland School of Crafts and participates in many workshops throughout the country. She mixes and prepares all of her glazes and recently discovered that she loves to carve designs with cut outs on her pieces. Each piece is unique and one of a kind. When she opens her kiln it is always a surprise to see the changes in the pottery due to varying temperatures and the placement of pieces in the kiln. Currently, Ardie has work in five galleries in both North and South Carolina. These include Franklin Square Gallery and Ricky Evans Gallery in Southport NC, Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash NC, Brookgreen Gardens in Murrells Inlet, and Lynda English Gallery in Florence. She feels very blessed to share her love of pottery with others and enjoys talking with people, learning what they look for in a pottery piece, and applying that knowledge to her work. See Ardie s exhibit during the month of July in the lobby of the Tidewater Grille Clubhouse! Many new and lasting friendships have commenced via Tastebuds. To sign up or get more information about Tastebuds, please mturnaue@yahoo.com or call Groups will be formed by Sunday, August 20th. Hope you will join us. Share the Road Lee Hughes My husband and I have been homeowners in Tidewater for four years, albeit part-time residents. As avid cyclists, we have been increasingly concerned about our safety on the roads, within the community and especially on Little River Neck Road, given the lack of bike lanes. Unfortunately, it seems like people panic Continued on page 8 7

8 when they come upon a cyclist. They often honk their horns and try racing around the biker, making the situation much more dangerous. I can t tell you how many times I ve almost witnessed a head-on crash, because the driver didn t pause to check if there was someone coming in the other direction before pulling out and gunning it. As drivers, we routinely slow down or wait for school busses, golf carts, pedestrians crossing, and traffic lights. Why should it be any different to use caution and pause before passing a person on a bicycle? The sacrifice of a few seconds out of one s day is infinitely preferable to the impact of hitting and injuring or killing someone. Sharing the road makes sense for everyone! How to Pass Someone on a Bicycle 1. Slow down, hang back at a respectful distance behind the cyclist, and look to see if the oncoming traffic lane is clear. John Stachura Memorial Bob Moss Pictured is the ceremony for the memorial tree dedication to John Stachura. This dedication marked the one year anniversary of John s passing. The Red Bud tree and memorial plaque was placed by John s many friends, the Red Cups and his North-ender golf group as a living reminder of this Tidewater pioneer and friend. 2. Wait the few seconds or minutes that it takes to be clear and avoid passing on a curve. 3. Pass the cyclist, with at least a meter s berth. There is no need to accelerate excessively, since the coast is clear. This YouTube video is only 1 ½ minutes and well worth watching. Hole in One John Mouco Congratulations...On Thursday, May 11th Frankie Miller had a Hole in One on the 12th hole at Tidewater. The hole was playing 145 yards and he used a 9 iron. Frankie was playing by himself and knew that the ball was close but never saw the ball go in the hole. He walked up to the green and did not see the ball. Fortunately Wayne Norman was sitting on his porch and saw the ball go in the hole. He told him the ball was in the hole. Wayne then called the Pro Shop and said he witnessed the Hole in One for Frankie. Hawaiian Vacation Carole Nofi Six Tidewater couples cruising around the Hawaiian Islands met with the captain of Norwegian cruise line s Pride of America. The captain lives in Myrtle Beach. Marlin Dawdy read this poem at the ceremony: Coach s Little Garden There s a very special garden Where the trees of memory grow Nurtured by the kindness And concern that good friends show. The roots are cherished memories Of good times in the past The branches tender promises That souls endure and last. It s a place of peace and beauty Where bright new hopes can start It s memory s lovely garden That soothes the hurting heart. 8

9 Red Cups Celebrate 8th Anniversary Litter Patrol Rich Opie Nofi On Saturday, June 3rd, twenty-five Cups got together to pickup litter from alongside Little River Neck Road; marking the 96th month since the Cups gathered together for their initial Adopt-A-Highway pick-up event. Recognize any of these orange vested gentlemen? They are your neighbors - members of the Red Cup crew who just completed this month s litter patrol as a part of Tidewater s Adopt- A-Highway Program. Since that first pick-up in June 2009, these Cups have removed 1405 orange/blue bags of litter from alongside Little River Neck Road. Based on the SCDOT standard measure of 15 lbs. per bag, that represents nearly 10 1/2 tons of litter. That s a pretty sizable pile of trash! In addition to the litter, volunteers also on occasion trim branches and weeds from along the fenced area bordering the roadway in an effort to keep the area more presentable. In addition, Fish, the programs coordinator, reports any damage to the fencing to the appropriate county/state departments for their follow up, etc. Thanks goes to not just this latest team of volunteers, but to each of the more than 90 different members of the Red Cups who have volunteered on one or more of the 98 events since June 09. And a special thanks to Marlin Fish Dawdy, whose idea it was to take on this project and who has coordinated the event since its inception, and also to Paul Blade Carver, Paul Louie Cioffi, Bob Buzz Etris, Ken Diablo Felker, Bob Doc Moss, Ray Okie Oksala, and Mario Sparky Renzi, who have each participated in more than 50 of the scheduled events.
