3 Looking Down The Track By Gary Brown It seems like the last four years have passed by like the Broadway Limited on a speed run from New York to Chicago. I have enjoyed every minute serving as your Superintendent and hope that I have done a good job. During the last four years we have expanded the size of the Division, adding counties in Virginia, North Carolina, and Maryland. We increased the number of meetings per year from six to eight. We hosted an MER Convention and we continue to produce the annual train show in the Virginia Beach Convention Center. All of this would not have been possible without the support of all the members of the Division. There are some members however, who have gone above and beyond to make the Division run, and I would like to recognize them. 4 Meeting News The two big agenda items for the January meeting are the Auction and the BOD elections. The auction rules are on the next page, so lets focus here on the elections. Four of the Director seats are being voted on. Gary Brown and Len Boucher are both stepping down after many years of service. Incumbents Conrad Haas and John Fallon are running, as well as newcomers Mark Neiting, Richard Smith, and Tom Sullivan. Ballots for the BOD elections were mailed out to members on our roster last month. If you have not received yours, they will be available at the meeting. If you have only recently joined or renewed to the NMRA, please bring some proof such as your NMRA card or a receipt from the web site. Awards and Contests Congratulations to Chuck Davis. Not content to rest upon his laurels for recognition as a Master Model Railroader, he has earned an additional AP award as Master Builder, Scenery. Last November s diorama contest had winners from both ends of our membership range. Long time member Larry Lambertson won Second with a diorama, and one of our newest members, John Esposito, won Third with his HO scale module. Finishing First was Dave Hudson with his junkyard module. Congratulations to all three. January is the Favorite Train contest, with all scales and prototypes welcome and encouraged. 4

5 The Auction The Tidewater Division Annual Auction is open to NMRA members only. If you know of someone who is not a member but wants to participate, they may join the NMRA at the meeting. MEMBERSHIP NUMBER: You will need a Tidewater Division member number to buy or sell at the auction. This is not the same as your NMRA number. If you are a new member or don t remember your number, contact John Fallon at, or (757) to get one. TO SELL AN ITEM: Fill out an auction slip for each item (or set of items). Auction slips are available at our web site, You must include your member number, item number, your name, item description, and minimum bid. Remember that 10% of the sale goes to the division. Items without a minimum bid will start at $0.50, items with no member number will be considered as donations to the division. Leave the slip with each item when you set them out before the auction. ITEM NUMBERS: You can use your own numbers, just make sure that each item has its own number. TO BID ON AN ITEM: You will receive a card with your member number on it when you check in. Before the auction, if you see an item you would like to bid on, put a check in the box on the slip. To bid on items during the auction, hold up your card and make sure you get the auctioneers attention (see the rules below). You must wait until after the auction to make payments or collect your proceeds. TIDEWATER DIVISION ANNUAL AUCTION RULES Rule #1: The Decisions of the Auctioneer are final! Rule #2: This is NOT a silent auction. Feel free to jump in with a bid at any time. * (You must get the Auctioneers attention.) Rule #3: Bidding increments: $0.50 to $ $0.50 per bid $10.00 to $ $1.00 per bid $30.00 and up: --- $5.00 per bid Rule #4: In the event that disagreements arise concerning the outcome of the bidding on any item, please consult Rule #1. 5

6 Tidewater Division Depot We have lots of items for sale to show your support for the Tidewater Division. To celebrate our 40th Anniversary, we have pins and patches of our Milepost 40 logo for $3.00 each. We also have our custom decorated HO scale NS boxcar kits in two road numbers, 1210 and They are $17.00 for one or $15.00 each for two or more. On the traditional side, pins with the Tidewater Division logo (NOT the new NMRA one!) and patches from prior conventions are still available for $1.00 each. JOINING THE NMRA S TIDEWATER DIVISION The Tidewater Division of the NMRA encompasses the South-Eastern Virginia and North-Eastern North Carolina. The area includes, in Virginia, Chesapeake, Franklin, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, Williamsburg, Gloucester County, James City County, Isle of Wight County, Mathews County, Southampton County, Surry County, and York County, and in North Carolina, Camden County, Currituck County, Chowan County, Gates County, Pasquotank County, and Perquimans County. To be a member of the Tidewater Division, you must be a member of the National Model Railroad Association (NMRA) and reside in the area covered by the Tidewater Division. For a limited time, we are offering a FREE six month Rail Pass NMRA membership. This offer is only available to new members, it includes the NMRA s monthly magazine, Scale Rails.
