LIVING THE DREAM 1
3 WORKING AT COWI, LIVING If you work at COWI you can easily choose to settle in Copenhagen. Situated approximately 12 kilometers from the capital city centre, COWI s headquarter is based in the town of Lyngby and quickly accessible from Copenhagen. INTERNATIONAL METROPOLIS WITH A SMALL-TOWN FLAIR Moving to Copenhagen can be an incredible experience for expats who love to live the urban, European life. The metropolis has a reputation for being one of the most cosmopolitan and exciting cities in Northern Europe. While food, culture, and art scenes are among the reasons locals choose life in Copenhagen, this big city with its small-town flair attracts many an expat as well.
5 FAMILIES Denmark has strong public day-care and educational systems, and if you take residence, work and pay taxes in Denmark you have access to free public healthcare. In Denmark, all families with children receive a family income supplement for each child under 18. Hei! Hej! JA Måske TAK Godmorgen Skål Skål LANGUAGE Danish has a bit of a reputation as a difficult language to grasp, and deservedly so. While it is a good idea to learn some of the local tongue, you will soon learn that most Danes speak English very well. As an employee in Denmark you can take Danish language lessons free of charge. To sign up you need a Danish CPR number (i.e. ID number).the language courses are offered by both private and public language centres and concluded with a state-approved test in line with the Common European Framework for Languages. RØD GRØD MED FLØDE [ˈʁŒÐˀ] [ˈGʁŒÐˀ] [ˈMEÐˀ] [ˈFLØːÐƏ]
7 40 min COPENHAGEN CENTER LYNGBY COPENHAGEN CENTER STATION 20 min LYNGBY GETTING AROUND COPENHAGEN CENTER STATION 20 min LYNGBY Copenhagen is world famous for its biking culture with over 390 kilometers of designated bike lanes. Public transportation is another well-functioning mode of transport. Metro is the way to go if you travel to and from the airport and within the inner parts of Copenhagen, while trains and buses are great for commuting to and from the capital s different districts and further away. 390 Kilometers of designated bike lanes
9 1 Viena 27 Paris 9 Copenhagen 5 Vancouver 31 Oslo 11 Amsterdam 19 Stockholm 2015 QUALITY OF LIVING CITY RANKINGS LIVING STANDARD The standard of living in Denmark is generally very high and people feel happy and safe. Denmark and Copenhagen consistently rank high on quality of life indexes. Lately, Copenhagen was ranked no. 9 in human resources consulting firm Mercer s Quality of Living 2015 rankings, while in 2014, the international global affairs magazine Monocle named the Danish capital the world s most liveable city. Denmark is also an expensive expat destination, but wages are relatively high to somewhat balance out the high cost of goods and services. TAX DENMARK While Denmark has a high income tax rate (marginal tax rate around 39%), it is important to be aware that the taxes help pay for its extensive social welfare system, and many of the services you pay for in other countries are funded by taxes here.
11 WORK-LIFE- BALANCE The Danish working culture is based on collaboration and personal responsibility. Everyone is encouraged to contribute with ideas and the atmosphere in the Danish workplace is professional but also casual. Both the working culture and the regulation of the labour market in Denmark will give you the opportunity to balance a career with family life. EMPLOYMENT RATE 73 % ( Denmark is no. 8 on the list out of 36 other OECD countries) LIFE SATISFACTION on a scale from 0 to 10: 7.5 rate ( Denmark is no. 1 on the list out of 36 other OECD countries) TIME DEVOTED TO LEISURE 16.1 hours ( Denmark is no. 2 on the list out of 36 other OECD countries) WANT TO KNOW MORE? icitizen.dk workindenmark.dk/working-in-dk internations.org/copenhagen-expats/guide visitcopenhagen.com
