1 Road Safety in 2016 estimated as of January 23, 2017 Development of road traffic fatalities in France mainland : persons are estimated to have died on the French mainland roads in 2016, representing 8 additional fatalities. Road fatalities should be broadly stable compared with. The difference brought out by this estimate has not yet been confirmed in the road traffic accidents national database, currently under consolidation. Hospitalized victims, injured people and injury accidents should have increased slightly (+2.3 %, +2.0 % et +1.1 % respectively). Overall, 777 lives were saved per year over the 5 years , compared to the 5 years The downward trend seen between 2011 results and 2016 results is of the same order of most road safety indicators (-12.0 % for injury accidents, % for fatalities, -11,0 % for injured people); but the number of hospitalized victims decreased by only -8.3 %, illustrating in particular the difficulties encountered to reduce the number of road accidents involving vulnerable road users Road Safety in 2016 estimated as of January 23,

2 Trends in 2016 per age group in France mainland : Fatalities among children and young people aged 18 to 24 decrease this year and are nearly 30 % lower than in. This decrease (fatalities and serious injuries) is particularly pronounced for moped users; fatalities among young motorcyclists also appear to continue their downward trajectory but they are more injured than last year. December 2016 was particularly deadly for young motorists aged 18 to 24 (+50 % fatalities compared to the last few years). Fatalities among people aged 65 and over remain on the strong upward trend since 2013 (+28 %). This increase is observed even in relation to the total population in that age group (increase of +17 % in this ratio since 2013, and +3% since ). However the situation varies according to the age group: young people, except during the end of the year, were spared while people aged 55 and over were more affected. Fatalities among motorcyclists are stable over the year but, while young people are spared, the number of motorcyclists killed over 45 continues its strong increase recorded last year. Fatalities among moped drivers are further reduced: this number was halved since. Fatalities among active road users strongly increase: cyclist fatalities rise by +7 %, pedestrian fatalities by +15 %. Both are far higher than those observed in. 5 Results according to the type of road network (from the BAAC over the first 10 months) : The number of injury accidents and injured victims on motorways should continue to increase in 2016 compared to, as well as accidents on dual carriageways. However, the number of fatalities on motorways, very high in, should be lower in 2016, without being below than in. The number of fatalities among pedestrians should still be high as in recent years (around 50 fatalities). Fatalities on county roads should be slightly up because of a resurgence of fatalities among pedestrians and motorcyclistes. However, the number of injury accidents should significantly decrease. Fatalities on communal roads show a slight decrease, due to a significant decline of fatalities among motorists and a substantial increase of fatalities among pedestrians and cyclists. The number of injury accidents should remain stable. Road users behaviour (estimates based on 10 months of data) : Excessive or inappropriate speed should remain the main cause of fatal accidents, in a very slight retreat in 2016 compared to. Nonetheless, this trend conceals a disparity between road networks. Driving speeds significantly increase on motorways and dual carriageways, where the number of injury and fatal accidents also increases. Alcohol, more present in than in 2014, returns to the level recorded in 2014 during the ten first months. However, the large number of fatalities among motorists in December 2016 could impact the final results. The use of illegal drugs while driving remains as present than last year. Failure to respect priority rules, as the third cause of fatal accidents, seems more present in 2016, like lack of attention while driving. This has to been seen in correlation with the increase of fatalities among the users of «soft» modes of transportation, pedestrians and cyclists. Development of road traffic fatalities in (super)regions : In comparison with, fatalities in 2016 appear significantly lower in 4 regions : Ile de France, Nouvelle Aquitaine, Occitanie, and Centre-Val de Loire. There would be 30 additional fatalities in 2016 in regions Bretagne and Bourgogne Franche-Comté, and more than 20 in region Provence Alpes Côte d Azur (PACA). In comparison with, fatalities would increase in 2016 in one region: Hauts de France. Beyond annual development, or comparison with the reference year, the most dangerous regions (far above the national average) for young people aged 18 to 24 (fatalities in relation to the region s population aged 18 to 24) are, on average over three years : Grand Est, PACA and Ile de France.
