The Almost Lost adventure category lasts for one day and it runs in a 30km area around Kajaani. In the Extremely Lost and Lost competitions, the adventurers can once again enjoy the amazing scenery of the Kainuu wilderness and experience the peacefulness that the nature provides. The route and the challenges of this adventures have been designed in such fashion that it will provides challenges for both beginners and more advanced competitors. During the adventure, you have the opportunity to enjoy several activities, including orienteering, kayaking, running, rope activities, water spatters and surprise tasks, that haven t been in this adventure the years before! Everyone 18 year old or older can participate, as long as they have basic swimming and orienteering skills. Participants do not have to be experienced in rope activities, since rope lessons will be given before the start of the race at the starting area. This year, the Extremely Lost and Lost adventure categories will start on Friday, the 15 th of September at 13:00 from Kuhmo and the goal is in Kajaani on Saturday the 16 th of September. The Almost Lost adventure will start in Kajaani 16 th of september and the finish is also in Kajaani. In all categories, men, women and mixed teams will be on the same track. There are cut-off checkpoints. The Cut-off checkpoint s numbers and timetables will be marked in the route map of the teams. The reason for this is to allow the teams to reach the finish with reasonable time differences and to give them time to perform as much quests as possible. Teams can also move on the route outside of these times if they find it necessary. ROUTES, FORKING, MAPS, ORIENTEERING SKILLS AND EMIT PUNCHING SYSTEM Routes: Extremely Lost, 24hours (non-stop), estimated distance with optimal route 240 km (Friday-Saturday) Lost, 16-18hours, estimated distance 200 km (Friday Saturday, with mandatory night break) Almost Lost, 6-8hours, estimated distance 80km (Saturday, day adventure) Forking: The routes are including forking. Forking means that for the same category s teams can have tasks-, orienteering- and transition sections in different orders, but in a way that same category s participants will complete the same track by the end of the competition. All the tasks, orienteering and transition sections are in numerical order and have to be completed in the given order. Follow your own maps, route information, the order of rotation and instructions! Maps and orienteering skills: All the maps and other possible equipment that might be needed for tasks are provided in the participation material. Moreover, during the adventure more maps can be given out in the quest checkpoints. In the Extremely Lost and Lost catogories the scale of the maps is 1: In the Almost Lost category the map scale is 1: :50 000

3 Notice the impact of the map scale in orienteering. For example, on the map 1: cm at the map means 350 meter at the terrain accordingly, on the 1: map 1cm means 500 meter on terrain. Other maps used in the competition vary between 1:1000 1:25000 scales. The scales are not necessarily marked on the map. It is enough if one of the team members has basic orienteering skills. In addition, good compass skills are also recommended. Only the most important updates, that concern route selection, are done to every map. It is recommended to pay attention to the way the paths are marked. Some of the marked paths are in a very good condition but at the same time some can be in a bad condition, and the teams have to estimate the roadworthiness. The locations of the checkpoints are mainly in clear and big places that are easy to spot. There are no updates on the orienteering maps (1:1000 1:15 000), so there can be found some mistakes, but they should not have an impact on the orienteering significantly. EMIT punching system During the competition Emit punching will be used. Remember to punch your Emit card at all checkpoint where Emit-reader can be found. The tracks can take you to the same checkpoint multiple times, and punching is needed every time. Remember to reset your Emit-card at the beginning of both of the days and also to read the Emit card at the finish for the organizers computer. Adventure tasks (Quests) The competition provides adventure tasks for both days, which will challenge the competitors physically and mentally with a various different tasks. Some of the adventure tasks are revealed only when they arrive to the checkpoint, some are known before from the competition guidebook. The adventure tasks are thought in a way that participants do not need any previous experiences. Every team participates in the adventure race according to their own comfort zone so you can choose do you want to do the quest tasks or do you not. If the team choose not to do the quest-task they will usually have some kind of penalty for this (usually time or some other task). THE FINAL RESULTS, PENALTIES AND PENALTY TIMES Final results The final results of the adventure races will be formed based on the following principles: - The teams that have completed the most of the check points, tasks and quests will be placed high in the end results. In other words, the teams that have been able to go through the track in correct order and without using cut-offs. - The finishing time counts with the teams that have completed the same number of tasks and quests. - The more the team has missed check points, tasks and quests, the lower they will be placed on the final results. Penalties and Penalty Times Considered that every adventure task has different penalty systems, which has to be informed before starting the task. The main principle is, that the possible penalties will be given or suffered right after the task is finished, and the team can proceed with the race normally after this. Usually this kind of penalty is running some additional leg etc. However, if in any reason the team happens to continue after an incorrect

5 action and wrongly stamps their card, the team can get 5-60 minute penalty. An uncompleted task will always cause at least 30 min penalty, depending on the task (e.g. 2 3h lasting canoeing task vs min lasting problem solving task). The penalties are calculated for every task in a manner, that skipping the task does not give any benefits for the team. The penalties are added to the finish times after the teams have finished the race. Water stations and Services There will be 3 4 water stations for each day of the Extremely Lost and Lost categories. The locations are marked on the map. In Almost Lost category there will be 2 3 water stations. The locations are marked on the map GPS-tracking In every category (Extremely Lost, Lost, Almost Lost) GPS tracking will be used. At the competition material pick-up also the phone number has to be given that will be with the team during the competition and the captain of the team must be named. Service stations Teams carry the equipment that they will need during the race. There are water stations (marked on the map) on the track, where teams can fill up their water bottles. There might be an opportunity to buy food somewhere on the track and it is recommended to bring some money. Captain meeting Every team has to choose a captain, who will represent the team on the captain s meeting on Saturday at 7:15 am in Kajaani competition center. Before the start the teams have to save the First Aid and the track master s number to the phone. The phone number has to be informed to the competition center. Check point punching The track can visit the same check point multiple times. In this case, the checkpoint is marked on the map with multiple numbers and it has to be stamped every time! The excess stamping does not matter, if the right stamps can be found on the card on right order. The last stamp is done at the finish line. Emit cards are checked, unloaded and reviewed right after arriving to the finish. Some task point can be using also the so called pliers stamp, where the checkpoint stamp is made on the competition card that is received from the organizers. Biking Wearing helmet is required while biking! Front and back lights are also mandatory at dusk/dark. Finishing the biking part helmets can be left on the saddle of the bike if there are no other instructions provided on the map or at the checkpoint. Bikes must be left in places that are marked on the map, where guarding them is arranged by the organizers. There are also areas where there is a possibility to leave the bike on its own and go by walk to the checkpoint to get the stamp. However, in these cases the organizers are not responsible of the bike. Remember to bring own lock for the bike and lock it if you find it necessary! In case of unfixable bike damage, army bikes can be ordered from the number found in the competition guide as service/first Aid. Teams lending army bikes, the bikes are given at the competition center on Saturday morning between am. Canoeing Canoeing equipment are provided by the organizers including paddles and life jackets. Teams have to have GPS with them in canoes! There can be private yards by the canoeing route, please respect their privacy! There are no checkpoints in private yard areas! First Aid and safety First Aid can be called from the number found in the competition guide. In case of serious emergency call 112 and guide the ambulance to the emergency place. It is recommended to download the 112 application to the adventure race phone, found in any smart phone application store. In case of emergency it is advised to call through this application. Remember to inform the organizers and the First Aid in serious emergencies when the situation allows it. GPS-tracking All the teams get GPS-tracking devices and instructions from the organizers. The devices are given to the teams on Saturday at 7:00 at the competition center. The device is packed to the uppercase of the bag in a manner that it is easily accessed. The organizers switch the GPS on. The audience and organizers can follow the teams in internet, The tracking can be seen afterwards as well, and it is shown during the pricing ceremony. Drop-out In case a team decides to stop and to not continue the race they have to call right away to the event director (number found in the competition routebook and map)
