The diagnosis is multiple sclerosis (MS). Every day, 400,000 Americans face the incredible challenge of learning to live with an unpredictable and often devastating disease that may eventually rob them of significant physical and mental abilities, their livelihoods and their independence. MS is a chronic, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. Symptoms may be mild such as numbness in the limbs or severe such as paralysis or loss of vision. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 50 but the unpredictable effects can be life-long. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot be predicted. A person with MS does not know when it will strike, what symptoms they will have, when it will get worse or better, or if they will become permanently disabled. This is why we ride. The National MS Society is the largest private sponsor of research in the world and proudly provides local programs designed to improve the lives of individuals and families affected by MS. By choosing to ride in Bike MS, you are joining thousands of people across the country united in the mission to end the devastating effects of MS.

PAGE 8 SAFETY RIDING IN WET WEATHER Brake lightly and use your front brakes less. Pay special attention to metal and slick surfaces. When you come across these spots don t turn, brake or accelerate. Be ready to put a foot down for balance. Avoid riding through puddles if you cannot see the bottom a puddle can hide a nasty pothole. When you get home, re-lubricate your bike chain to prevent it from rusting. KNOW THE RULES OF THE ROAD When you ride a bike in traffic, you are a driver. You have the same rights and responsibilities as the driver of an automobile. You must give signals, obey signs and lights, yield the right of way and keep a sharp lookout for danger just like cars do. The Bike MS routes are not closed to traffic. The only time that you can ignore signs and traffic is when directed by police. ROAD HAZARDS Ride on the right side of the road a couple of feet from the edge of the road. Passing cars usually sweep this part of the road clean from gravel, sand and debris. Scan the road ahead for potential dangers. Keep your eyes moving from the road ahead to traffic in front of you. Watch out for sand and gravel on the road. Cross railroad tracks at a right degree angle. SHARING THE ROAD Avoid falling for the herd instinct or playing follow the leader when riding in groups. When preparing for a lane change, look out for cars or other bicycles approaching from the rear as you would when riding alone or in a car. Look left and right for traffic at stops signs do not blindly follow the rider ahead of you into an intersection. When you stop to rest, make sure that you pull completely off the road. If you have to walk your bike, keep it between you and the road. Do not follow too closely behind other cyclists or cars. Do not draft behind motor vehicles. Pass on the left only! When passing, call out On your left!. When you hear someone calling, don t turn around. Hold steady on course and ride straight. Pull out of a pace line before slowing. If the National MS Society determines that the road is unsafe, the ride will be cancelled or suspended.

PAGE 9 SAFETY AND TRAINING YOUR BIKE All Bike MS sponsoring shops have professionally trained staff to assist you in fitting your bike to your body and riding style. If you get tired or sore quickly, please go have your bike checked out to make sure it is right for you! Just by keeping your bike in good operating condition, it will work well whenever you take it out. Periodic maintenance and service will keep you riding! All sponsoring shops give free professional inspections and tips for properly maintaining and repairing your bicycle. Take advantage of this opportunity by visiting a Bike MS Bike Shop TODAY! YOUR BODY Master the basics of proper technique. Learn to ride a smooth, steady line and concentrate on pedaling at a high cadence ( strokes per minute). Build your mileage base. Start your training slowly with a few short rides to gain fitness. When you re able to ride 4 or more times a week, gradually increase the distance of your long ride to at least twice the mileage of your regular training rides. After about 500 miles of base building incorporate some hill work or interval training into your schedule. Again, talk to the staff at any of the sponsoring bike shops to find out what kind of training is best for you! STAYING HYDRATED It is important to stay well hydrated before, during and after a ride. If you do not drink enough fluids, dehydration will result, causing nausea, muscle cramps, chills and lack of motivation! Most seriously, dehydration can lead to heat stroke, a serious medical condition. Drink 16 oz of water 1-2 hours before riding. Drink another oz of water 15 to 30 minutes before riding. On rides over 2 hours in duration, we recommend a carbohydrate energy drink. Drink 16 oz of energy drink minutes before your ride. Drink 5-10 oz of water or energy drink while you ride every minutes. CYCLING NUTRITION If you are new to the sport of cycling, it may come as a surprise to learn that eating is an important component of cycling. Food replenishes the energy that you burn while cycling. When you eat, your body takes the food s carbohydrates and stores it as fuel in your muscles. If you ride for a long time without eating, your body's fuel reserve becomes depleted and you may experience dizziness and fatigue. To avoid this, carry something to eat on rides lasting longer than 90 minutes. Before you ride, eat a good breakfast consisting of foods such as cereal, bagels, fresh fruit, muffins, yogurt and milk. When you are on your bike, keep fresh fruit on hand, like bananas, pears and apples. Avoid foods like candy or chocolate when riding. Avoid alcohol. It dehydrates you and slows your body s recovery process.

PAGE 11 FUNDRAISING TIPS There are four tried and true methods to fundraising: (1) Face-to-Face (2) Letter Writing (3) Telephone Requests (4) Online. Choose the method with which you are most comfortable, or try a combination! THE FACE-TO-FACE ASK The most effective fundraising method is asking for your contribution face-to-face. You can build your confidence when asking a friend to contribute to the National MS Society by remembering these helpful hints: Remember that you are not asking for the contribution for yourself; you are asking on behalf of the National MS Society and all of the people served by the Alabama Chapter. Educate your potential donor on the mission of the MS Society to end the devastating effects of multiple sclerosis. This way, they can feel comfortable about making a contribution. (Carry this handbook with you when asking, to use as a resource for any questions you may receive.) Treat your request as an everyday conversation. Don t apologize! There is value in what you are saying. Build your request around your excitement and enthusiasm for cycling and your commitment to end the devastating effects of multiple sclerosis. LETTER WRITING Letter writing is one of the most efficient ways to raise money. Send your letters to your: Business Associates (flip through your Rolodex!) Family, neighbors and faraway friends (take a look at your holiday card list!) College alumni, fraternity / sorority members. When writing your request letter, remember these tips: 1. Always include a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Make it easy for your friends and family to respond. 2. Personalize your appeal. Use familiar details about yourself and why you are riding. 3. Include a deadline as a gentle nudge to get those contributions in. Make a copy of the Where does the money go? section and include it with your letter. 4. Follow up with a note or phone call to those who have not responded. Send a thank you note once you receive a pledge. MAKE THE CALL The telephone has become a popular part of fundraising in the past few years. It is one of the most effective ways to reach out to a prospective list of contributors - particularly those you do not see on a daily basis, but who may need that personal touch. GO ONLINE!! The internet has become an everyday activity for most. You can set up your own personal page on our site that will track your fundraising and you can send out s to possible donors. To make things even easier people can make donations towards your fundraising online! This is a great way to do it!!

FUNDRAISING TIPS PAGE 12 Seven easy steps to being a successful fundraiser: 1. Develop your list. Determine who on your list needs to hear your voice. There is nothing wrong with contacting people that you have not had contact with in several years. Some of your friends and business associates may be better suited to a letter writing campaign, but some need a personal touch. 2. Pick the best time to call. Some calls will be quick and some will take more time. Build a plan of who you are going to call and when business associates and vendors used to talking to you during the day, family and friends on weekends or evenings. 3. Do your homework. To avoid uncomfortable pauses, figure out what your request will be before you call. 4. Make the call! Once you place the call, people may wonder why you re calling. Explain your commitment to help end the devastating effects of MS by participating in the Bike MS then state your fundraising goal and ask for assistance. Remember, silence is not a no. Wait until your prospect has responded to your initial request before you suggest a different amount. 5. Say thanks! Regardless of the outcome, thank them for their time, consideration and support. If you find that someone is unable to assist financially, invite them to volunteer at the event. The same goes if you find your caller is very enthusiastic about the Bike MS. 6. Follow up. It may seem like a detail, but it s a critical step in fulfilling your goal and showing your appreciation to your donors. Remember to personalize your thank you with the donor s name and amount of the contribution you agreed upon over the phone. Include a self-addressed, stamped envelope; it makes it easier for them to send in their contribution. 7. Have fun! If you sound excited about the Bike MS and the fight against MS it will be contagious. You can challenge your friends to match your contribution by either joining you on the Bike MS or sponsoring you with a match of your own personal contribution. It s important that your sponsors understand your personal commitment. Focus on Your Commitment Your commitment to ride is incredible. Never underestimate the magnitude of this commitment. It will touch and inspire others more than you will probably know. People love to invest in dreamers... In doers... They will want to invest in you because it makes them a part of your accomplishment. Your commitment is to raise money and awareness about a devastating disease and its effects on people with MS and their families. Your commitment is about ending the devastating effects of MS.

PAGE 13 SAMPLE FUNDRAISING LETTERS Dear Potential: Business Associates On September 26-27, 2009, I will be joining hundreds of other bicyclists to ride over 150 miles in Bike MS: Historic Mooresville sponsored by the Alabama Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. By making a contribution on my behalf, you are supporting local programs and research for those affected with the unpredictable disease. My goal is to raise ${FUNDRAISING GOAL}. Please help me reach that goal with your pledge. Your donation is tax deductible within IRS rules. If you wish, you may mail me all or a portion of your contribution today in the selfaddressed, stamped envelope I ve enclosed with this letter. Otherwise, I will collect your pledge after the Bike Ride. Please make all checks payable to the National MS Society, with my name on the memo line. Feel free to contact me with any questions about Bike MS or to make your contribution over the phone. I appreciate your support of this worthy cause. Thank you! Sincerely, Joe Cyclist Your address I, am pledging $ to support your participation in Bike MS. Good luck! Dear Friend: Friends/Family/Neighbors Once a year just isn t often enough to keep in touch. Since the holidays, I ve kept busy with work and family, and have taken up a new hobby bicycling! I am writing to ask your help in my endeavor. I will be tackling hills and curves on the back roads of North Alabama, but people with MS tackle larger obstacles everyday. The ability to get out of bed on one s own, much less get on a bicycle and ride is an impossibility for some people with MS. I am riding for those who are unable to ride with the hope that one day the letters MS will stand for Mystery Solved. Bike MS is a fundraising campaign for riders who must raise at least $200 in order to participate. I have participated for years and I am looking forward to doing it again! This year I want to surpass my goal of raising $. Please help me reach this goal by making a minimum contribution of $.
