3 What is a Travel Plan? Long term transport management strategy aiming to reduce the number of single occupancy car trips and increase the level of sustainable travel for new and existing developments: Walking Cycling Public transport Car sharing Electric Vehicles Car Clubs 2014 Travel for Cambridgeshire survey results 3

4 Why is Travel Planning important to us? High % of carbon emissions are from transport To assist Cambridge in achieving the aims of the Transport Strategy and City Deal Lower congestion Improve safety Lower local air pollution & noise Linked to happier, healthier, productive staff & students Lower cost of travel Improved journey time Increased accessibility Reduced stress from travel Increased physical activity & improved health To demonstrate commitment and compliance 4

8 The University of Cambridge Travel Plan 2011 Objectives 1. Reduce the need to travel 2. Manage carbon emissions from University generated travel 3. Manage the demand for travel by car, especially single occupancy journeys 4. Increase travel options for non-car modes 5. Improve travel affordability 6. Support development at North West Cambridge by removing current trips on the highway network TARGET - no more than 25% of journeys to work should be made by car (single occupancy) 8

11 North West Cambridge Travel Plan To achieve a modal share of no more than 40% of trips to work by car (excluding car passengers). NWC AAP Objectives: To reduce the need to travel To reduce the overall reliance on the private car To build upon good urban design principles that increase the permeability of the development To promote the use of car sharing To reduce costly road traffic congestion and further damage to the environment To encourage community involvement in travel behaviour change initiatives 11

14 NWCD: Services and Facilities for cycling Residents Cycle Loan scheme: Bikes loaned out to new NWCD residents to trial cycling Removes the requirement to buy a bike first, to see if they can make it part of their lifestyle Given advice, journey planning and cycle training when they receive the bike Monitor usage At the end of the loan the resident can purchase the bike with a discount and pay back over a few months I have used the bike on journeys where I would otherwise catch a bus or train 14

Offer advice and signpost to services - tailored to their lifestyle and motivations. The challenge Closure I m starting a new job working on the CBC. I ve cycled in the past at the weekends but I m nervous about cycling through Cambridge as it looks really busy and unsafe. There are many routes which are off road, would you like a personalised journey plan? Also as a resident of the NWCD you are eligible to free cycle training, helping you to feel safer cycling on the roads. That sounds really helpful.thank you! Have you brought a bike with you? We can loan you a bike for a months trial. Fancy giving it a go?
