2 46th Annual Dick Allen Lansing To Mackinaw Bicycle Tour August 31 September 4, NEW THIS YEAR 5 UP and 5 East Routes will have optional ending points of St. Ignace or Rudyard What Is DALMAC? The Dick Allen Lansing to MACkinaw Bicycle Tour is Michigan s annual, fully-supported, epic end-of-summer bicycle camping tour. Four routes wind northward in four or five days through Michigan s countryside and quaint small towns, from East Lansing to up north destinations, ending in Mackinaw City, St. Ignace, or Rudyard. Each route varies in distance providing just the right challenge for all cyclists whether beginner or experienced, relaxed paced or speedy. DALMAC is one of the oldest all-volunteer-run tours in the United States, celebrating 46 years of excellence, thus DALMAC is one of the lowest cost tours in the nation. DALMAC is about bicycling! DALMAC is about sharing the roads! DALMAC originated in 1971 when former State Representative Dick Allen challenged his colleagues and constituents with a ride all the way to the bridge to prove that bikes and cars could share Michigan roads safely. The objectives of DALMAC are to develop an awareness of bicyclists and their needs among the citizens of Michigan, to promote bicycling as a healthy means of transportation and recreation, and to encourage wider use of bicycles. DALMAC is staffed by volunteers of the Tri-County Bicycle Association (TCBA). If interested in volunteering, send an to: volunteer@dalmac.org Who Can Ride? DALMAC is open to any capable and interested cyclist on a non-motorized bicycle. Riders under the age of 18 must be accompanied by their parent or responsible adult who must ride with them. Preparing For DALMAC For your enjoyment, you and your bicycle should be in good condition. You should be able to make your own minor repairs. Pace yourself to allow for food and rest stops and to arrive at each day s destination for dinner by 5:00 p.m. To help you achieve this pace, we have developed suggested advance guidelines that you will find in your map booklet. For Your Safety Bicycle helmets are required Bicycle flags are highly recommended No headphone devices are allowed while riding (including Ipods, Bluetooth, etc.) All riding must be done during daylight hours Obey all state and local laws. LOCAL POLICE ENFORCEMENT IS BEING SOLICITED TO HELP ENFORCE THIS REQUIREMENT. For those having someone pick them up the last day of the ride, please have them meet you at the ending destination, and NOT drive on the route to find you. Mighty Mac Bridge Crossing The Mighty Mac is one of the world s longest suspension bridges, spanning the Straits of Mackinac for a total of five miles and linking Michigan s Upper and Lower Peninsulas. DALMAC riders are given special permission to ride bicycles across the bridge. Riders who are on a route not scheduled to cross the bridge must make provisions for their own transportation to the bridge and back as indicated on page 3 under Reminders. Weather conditions may impact bridge crossing, as determined by the Bridge Authority. Please attend your group s Saturday evening meeting for updates and bridge crossing information.
