1 38. SH 114/SH 121 Corridor The DFW Connector : FT1345, FT 1347, FT1424, FR1424, FT1425, FR1425, FT1440, FT1500, FR1500, FT1505, FR1505, FT1507, FR1507, FT1510, FR1510, FT1715, FR1715, FT2720, FR2720, HM8190 GENERAL DESCRIPTION The SH 114/SH 121 Funnel Project in far northeastern Tarrant County is a major undertaking that will improve congestion and weaving around the confluence of five existing freeways north of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, and even transform a small portion of FM 2499 near Grapevine Mills Mall into a sixth freeway. The project limits of the SH 114/SH 121 corridor are as follows: (1) on SH 114 between Kimball Avenue in Southlake to east of International Parkway; (2) on SH 121 between the west end of Business SH 121 in Lewisville to Hall-Johnson Road in Grapevine; (3) on SH 360 between SH 121 and Euless-Grapevine Road in Grapevine; (4) on International Parkway between SH 114 and the North Entrance of DFW Airport; (5) on IH 635 between SH 121 in Grapevine and Freeport Parkway in Irving; and (6) on FM 2499 between south of Gerault Lane in Flower Mound to SH 121 in Grapevine. The main portion of this project is the 2-mile-long section where SH 114 and SH 121 share the same freeway facility. This segment will be reconstructed to accommodate 13 general purpose lanes (plus auxiliary lanes) and 4 frontage road lanes (plus auxiliary lanes near ramp locations and cross-streets). This segment will also feature 4 concurrent HOV/Managed lanes, which will operate essentially as Page 1 of 5

2 SH 114 tolled express lanes. The HOV/Managed lanes will begin near SH 26, just west of the SH 114/SH 121 split, and proceed east through the SH 121/International Parkway interchange to transition into the SH 114 HOV/Managed lanes planned through Irving. No access to/from SH 121, International Parkway, or any other intermediate locations is provided in the HOV/Managed lanes through the funnel. For the segment of SH 114 west of the SH 114/SH 121 merge to Kimball Avenue in Southlake, the freeway will be reconstructed for 8 general purpose lanes (plus auxiliary lanes) and 4 frontage road lanes (plus auxiliary lanes near ramp locations and cross-streets). The frontage roads will fly over SH 26 (Dallas Avenue) and the Cottonbelt rail corridor to allow a continuous flow for local access traffic in this segment. This portion of the project will also feature two direct connector ramps to/from SH 26 west of the corridor and a flyover ramp to FM 1709 from the SH 114 westbound frontage road. The segment of SH 121 south of the SH 114/SH 121 Funnel will be expanded to carry 6 general purpose lanes (plus auxiliary lanes), 4 frontage road lanes (plus auxiliary lanes near ramp locations and cross-streets), and a collector-distributor facility (of up to 7 total lanes) that will funnel SH 121 and SH 360 traffic into and out of two new direct connector ramps to/from SH 114 West. The new direct connector ramps will be a large improvement compared to today s connections which requires traffic to use William D. Tate Avenue and travel through several stoplights. The northbound-to-westbound direct connector will also feature an exit ramp to the SH 114 westbound frontage road so that traffic can access FM 1709, Business SH 114, and the Baylor Hospital. Another part of the improvements to this segment include expansion to 6 general purpose lanes for a small section of SH 360 north of Euless- Grapevine Road to better facilitate lane balancing and weaving to/from SH 121. The complex segment of SH 121 north of the SH 114/SH 121 Funnel will feature two collector-distributor facilities. One is located between SH 114/International Parkway and IH 635, and the other is between IH 635 and FM The collector-distributor facilities will carry up to 9 lanes in order to accommodate traffic movements between various interchanges in this segment. SH 121 itself will be improved with the construction of new grade separations at Freeport Parkway and Sandy Lake Road and will carry 10 general purpose lanes between the west end of Business SH 121 in Lewisville to FM 2499, 8 general purpose lanes between FM 2499 and IH 635, and 10 general purpose lanes between IH 635 and SH 114/International Parkway. Four lanes of frontage roads (plus auxiliary lanes near ramp locations and cross-streets) will be provided between the west end of Business SH 121 and Bass Pro Drive. Frontage road lanes will only be provided in the southbound direction south of Bass Pro Drive, but this facility will transition to the westbound SH 114 frontage road as it approaches the SH 114/SH 121 Funnel. The expansion of SH 121 north of the SH 114/SH 121 Funnel will also require improvements to a short section of IH 635 between SH 121 and Freeport Parkway, as well as an upgrade of FM 2499 south of Gerault Road to a freeway facility. The current 6-lane section of IH 635 will be expanded to 10 general purpose lanes between SH 121 and Royal Lane, and 8 general purpose lanes between Royal Lane and Freeport Parkway to facilitate lane balancing and weaving to/from the SH 121 direct connector ramps. The new FM 2499 freeway facility will contain 4 general purpose lanes with grade separations and ramps provided at Stars and Stripes Boulevard (for direct access to/from Grapevine Mills Mall) and Grapevine Mills Parkway. The responsible agency for this project will be the Texas Department of Transportation Fort Worth District. All improvements for the SH 114/SH 121 project are expected to be completed by year Page 2 of 5
