1 RIDE WITH PRIDE, WEAR A HELMET Kohl s Injury Prevention and Education Programs at Cincinnati Children s PLAYTIME WITH SAFETY SAM

2 Dear Boys and Girls, We d like to introduce our special friend Safety Sam who is our Injury Prevention Turtle. He is a safety expert who d like to help you learn more about safety through the fun activities and games on the following pages. Safety Sam knows how cool it is to play safe, even when riding a bicycle, walking to school, or just playing in the back yard. We hope you enjoy the book, but most importantly - we hope you stay safe! Remember - COOL IS CAREFUL, NEVER DAREFUL! If you or your parents have any questions about safety, please call the Trauma Service at. We ll be glad to help! (513) This book is sponsored in part by a generous contribution from:

3 Take These Tips From The Injury Prevention Turtle Always wear a helmet when you go out on your bicycle, scooter, rollerblades or skateboard. Your helmet should fit snugly under the chin and low over the forehead, about two finger widths above the eyebrow. The helmet should also fit your head securely. Helmets should be replaced if involved in a crash. Extra riders are not welcome. Never let a person ride on the handlebars. Improperly sized bikes are dangerous. You should be able to place both feet flat on the ground when straddling the bike. Do not swerve in traffic and always watch for cars. Just like a car, you should obey all traffic lights and signals. Safety is for everyone, even grown-ups.
