Dear Parents/Carers, It was lovely to welcome the pupils back on Monday for the start of our summer term. The week started with an assembly led by myself which focused on our core value of resilience. The message centred around the fact that people who demonstrate resilience when they face challenges in their lives are not always famous or well-known people but there were moments in our lives when all needed to draw on resilience to get us through difficult situations. I also explored the concept by explaining that having resilience doesn't mean that you don t have feelings of upset, anger or frustration but it is about developing the resilience to be able to move forward. Again, we have many exciting events planned for this term so please be aware of our calendar dates in the newsletter; we look forward to seeing many of you at some of these events. Have a lovely weekend. Kim Fox Water Stations We have many water stations around school. Pupils are advised to bring in their named water bottles so they can keep hydrated and refill their water bottles throughout the day.

2 Values education Values education is an approach that uses moral values to create a positive learning environment. Each new value is introduced in assembly and then visited in learning sessions across the week. The language of values is embedded in the day to day life in the school and pupils are encouraged to demonstrate these values through their behaviour choices. How can you help? Each week, we will publish the current value in the newsletter along with some quotes or reflection activities. Please discuss these with your children and the meaning of the value and how the children can incorporate these into their everyday lives. Our current value is the value of: Resilience

3 Healthy lifestyle and wellbeing As part of our Healthy Schools approach at John Buchan School, we are introducing a new page to our school newsletter. Each week, we will publish a range of information to share ideas in relation to aspects of healthy lifestyle and wellbeing that you may be interested in. The topics covered will range from healthy eating, fitness and exercise and ideas to aid personal wellbeing. Please let us know if there is a particular area of interest to you that we can publish in this weekly bulletin. This week our focus is on: Different ways of presenting fruit snacks

4 CYCLISTS AND GERMAN LAW All personnel are reminded that it is German law that ALL cyclists adhere to the following: a. Lights - ALL bicycles are to have working non-blinking front (white or pale yellow coloured) lights and a rear (red) light fitted (this may be of the blinking variety but MUST be non-blinking when the bike is stationary). b. Reflectors - ALL bicycles are to have a minimum of 2 yellow reflectors on each wheel with a white reflector at the front of the bike, and a red reflector on the rear of the bike. c. Bell - ALL bicycles are to be fitted with a warning device; this can be a bell or a horn. d. Brakes - ALL bikes are to be fitted with two independently acting brakes fitted. e. Racing bikes - these are defined as weighing less than 12kg with drop handlebars, a rim diameter of at least 630mm and a rim width not more than 23mm. Racing bike exemptions: they are not required to meet the above rules however, if riding at night, they are required to have lights and reflectors. The German Civil Police (GCP) will issue on the spot fines for not having fitted any of the above. All children under the age of 13 MUST wear a helmet by law. Older cyclists are recommended to wear a helmet but it is not currently a legal requirement. Helmets should conform to the safety mark ÖNORM EN 1078.

5 All About My Hair A friend of my parents and I called Kelly is not very well and is having chemotherapy treatment, which may mean she may loose her hair! I decided I would help other people who also might lose their hair because of chemotherapy. I donated my hair to a charity called the Little Princess Trust, who make wigs for children who don t have hair because they are so ill. :-( My Aunty Donna is a hairdresser and agreed to help a cut my hair off. I had 3 large pony tails, 9 inches long each. It took a lot of persuading to convince mum and dad but they said yes when I explained why I wanted it cut. I m glad I did it. I ve had lots of positive comments like, wow you re brave and well done Holly, you did the right thing. I was happy when I saw that Kelly liked my hair and she thought I did the right thing. I am really pleased with my hair, it was definitely the right choice and I would encourage others to do the same if they wanted to. Written by Holly T (6SJM)
