2 STUDY BACKGROUND (HMSAMS Completed in 2008 ) Reston Access Management Group Study (RMAG) Tysons Metrorail Stations Access Management Study (TMSAMS) Completed in 2012 With the construction of Phase II of Metrorail s Silver Line, there is a need for a plan to enhance access to the future Metrorail Silver Line Stations in Fairfax County. The Herndon Metrorail Stations Access Management Study (HMSAMS) was established, in 2013, to develop a bicycle and pedestrian improvement plan for areas surrounding the future Herndon and Innovation Center Metrorail Stations. FCDOT is currently updating the County s ten year bus service plan and will begin a study that will identify necessary roadway improvements in the Herndon area sometime in the coming months.

3 STUDY BACKGROUND In 2013, a 16-member group was formed to represent the diverse interests of the area, to identify necessary pedestrian and bicycle facility improvements, and help guide the direction of study. 9 PUBLIC OUTREACH-Public Workshops & Online Survey Participants were informed about: existing bicycle and pedestrian facility conditions, already funded bicycle and pedestrian facility improvements, recommended bicycle and pedestrian facility improvements identified through the Bicycle Master Plan, Sidewalk Inventory and HMSAMS Advisory Group. Participants were asked to: prioritize recommended bicycle and pedestrian facility improvements, and recommend other improvements that haven t been identified. 9

30 MOST POPULAR COMMENTS Need easier and safer crossings for pedestrians and bicyclists at Sunrise Valley Drive & Fairfax County Parkway Need better crossing at Dulles Toll Road and Centreville Road Need more lighting and better sidewalk access to Innovation Center station Bike lanes on Van Buren Street between W&OD Trail and Herndon Parkway Need more off-street connections, including Downs Subdivision to Herndon Station, Rock Hill Road to Innovation Better landscaping and buffers along sidewalks 30

31 Next Steps HMSAMS Final Report has been completed (Includes Station Access Management Plans), Approximately $21,000,000 dedicated to HMSAMS projects in the BOS Six-Year Transportation Program. Station Access Management Plans, and recommended improvements, will be further evaluated by FCDOT Staff to recommend projects for funding to the BOS, Begin design of highest priority projects. 31
