1 BICYCLE DAY Cardinal Shelter Tuesday, August 4, 2015 Kelly Sedlak, Assistant Superintendent NOTE: THERE IS A TIME CHANGE IN THE 2015 JUDGING SCHEDULE. Judging times will begin at 9:00 am and the last judging time will begin at noon. GENERAL GUIDELINES 1. Age of Participants: 4-H age unless noted in specific class guidelines 2. Participation Guidelines: Counties may be represented by a maximum of two participants in each class. No individual may participate in more than one class. The clock trophy winner of any class in 2014 is not eligible to participate in the same class in Awards will be presented at approximately 3:00 p.m. in the Youth Center. Judges will preside over the event and their decision will be final. The contest is designed to be practical demonstration and an attempt has been made to simulate operating condition. 3. Type of Evaluation: All participants must compete the following: Personal interview Parts ID Bicycle Inspection Bicycle Rider Skill course (Could be up to 4 skill areas: double obstacle test, double zig-zag obstacle, turning around, and figure 8 steering) The points-off system will be used with penalty points given for errors. The winning contestant will be the one with the lowest score. FOR THE DESIGN OF EACH RIDER SKILL COURSE PLEASE SEE FOLLOWING PAGES! 4. Participant MUST bring: Registration information provided to you by your County 4-H Educator. Completed project book showing involvement in and progress toward completion of their project goals. All participants are required to provide their own bicycle and properly fitted bicycle helmet to wear during the skill course activity. CLASSES J-1 Bicycling For Fun (ages 11 & younger) J-2 Bicycling For Fun (ages 12 & older) J-3 Wheels In Motion (ages 11 & younger) J-4 Wheels in Motion (ages 12 & older) AWARDS AND SPONSORS 1. All participants will receive a participation award sponsored by the Ohio State Fair. 2. The top 20% of each class will receive Outstanding of the Day awards sponsored by Friends of 4-H, Conservation Tillage Conference, and Nikki and Bill Conklin 3. One clock trophy will be presented to the top individual in each class.

3 Sample Bicycle Skill Test 1 - Double obstacle test Purpose: To determine the rider's ability to gauge limited space on a straight line. Diagram: 5 inches 5 feet Procedure: From a riding start, the rider slowly maneuvers between the pairs of obstacles without either tire touching any obstacle. When the rider has gone the entire distance, he or she turns and repeats the performance in the opposite direction. Scoring: No. Times Penalty Points 1. Having either tire touch an obstacle x2 2. Touching foot to ground x5 3. Not passing between every pair of obstacles x5 4. Skidding wheel x5 5. Using brake excessively x5 6. Expending an excessive amount of energy x3 Total number of penalty points
4 Sample Bicycle Skill Test 2 - Double zig-zag obstacle test Purpose: To test the rider's ability to gauge limited space on a zig-zag line. Diagram: Procedure: From a riding start, the cyclist zig-zags at a slow rate of speed between the pairs of obstacles without either tire touching an obstacle. When the rider has traveled the entire distance, he or she turns and repeats the performance in the opposite direction. Scoring: No. Times Penalty Points 1. Having either tire touch an obstacle x2 2. Touching foot to ground x5 3. Not passing between every pair of obstacles x5 4. Skidding wheel x5 5. Using brake excessively x5 6. Expending an excessive amount of energy x3 Total number of penalty points
5 Sample Bicycle Skill Test 3 - Turning around Purpose: To have the rider demonstrate the ability to turn around easily and smoothly within a limited area. Diagram: 24 feet 12 feet Procedure: The rider travels along the left side of the 12-foot lane, turns clockwise and goes in the opposite direction. Rider then goes along the right side of the lane and turns counterclockwise giving proper signals for all turns. Scoring: No. Times Penalty Points 1. Touching foot to ground x5 2. Failure to give signals x5 3. Improper signals given x5 4. Touching any border line with wheels x10 5. Off course x5 6. Failure to make smooth and easy turns x5 7. Using brakes excessively x5 Total number of penalty points
6 Sample Bicycle Skill Test 4 - Figure eight steering Purpose: To evaluate the rider's ability in steering and balance. Diagram: Procedure: Scoring: The rider takes a moving start with both hands on the handlebars and makes three complete figure eights. The riding lane is 12 inches wide. Penalty No. Times Points 1. Touching foot to ground x5 2. Not using both hands on the handle bars x5 3. Having either tire touch any border line x2 4. Off course x5 5. Using brakes excessively x5 6.
